Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - Flagstaff took two of three from Prescott to move even closer to the top of the ML West as the Hops now are just three games back of first with 18 games left in the regular season. This was a tightly contested series with all three games decided by one run.
In the opener, the Hot Shots blew a five run lead, but rallied with a run in the top of the ninth to win it 6-5. Willie Reece's sac fly scored Harwill O'Kane with the winning run to end the Hops winning streak.
Prescott got on the board in the first on a Matt Olsen solo home run, his 28th on the season. They would extend that lead to 2-0 in the third on a solo home run from Willie Reece. Harwill O'Kane would make it 5-0 in the fourth with a three-run home run to left off of Alex Farmer and it looked like the Hot Shots would cruise to a victory.
But the Hops chipped away at that lead. RBI singles from David Petrovski in the sixth and Ryan Kelly in the seventh cut that lead to 5-2. Then, after getting the first two outs in the eighth, Oscar Aleman blasted a single back up the middle and Forrest Owen was hit by a pitch. Donnie Roland then hit a fastball down the middle deep into the center field grass area and the game was tied at 5-5, his ninth on the season.
But in the ninth, Aldo Osuna could not keep the Hot Shots off the board, loading the bases with no outs, he gave up a sac fly to Willie Reece to put the Hot Shots ahead 6-5.
Closer Lester Medrano came on and sent down the Hops in order to pick up his 36th save and end the Hops three game winning streak. Aldo Osuna (5-8) took the loss, allowing one run on one hits, walking two in one inning of work.
On Saturday afternoon, the Hops rallied for a 5-4 victory to even the series. Grant Mitchell's two-run home run in the eighth was the difference as the Hops moved to within four games of first place St George with the win.
The Hops went up 3-0 in the first inning on a three-run home run from Emmitt Hampton. It was his 27th home run of the season.
But Prescott picked away at that lead. Willie Reece hit a sac fly in the third to score George Collins to get Prescott on the scoreboard. A J.J. Ruffing RBI single in the fifth cut it to 3-2 and the Hot Shots tied it on a Ryan Meger sac fly later in the inning, once again scoring Collins.
The Hot Shots would take the lead off of Juro Yamaguchi in the seventh as Josh Carroll homered to left to put them up 4-3. It was Carroll's 31st on the year.
That set the stage for the Hops. In the eighth, David Benitez lined a single to center to open the inning. Grant Mitchell then hit the first pitch that he saw over the wall in left to give Flagstaff the lead at 5-4. It was Mitchell's seventh on the year.
Vic Miller came on and after giving up a lead off single to Josh Carroll, he was able to get the final three outs to earn his 34th save to keep the Hops playoff hopes alive.
Juro Yamaguchi (8-11) picked up the win, working eight innings and allowing four runs on nine hits, striking out three and walking two.
Ryan Kelly went 0 for 4 to end his 21 game hitting streak.
On Sunday afternoon, Vic Miller blew a save opportunity in the top of the ninth, but Oscar Aleman picked him up with an RBI single with no outs in the bottom half to walk it off as the Hops won a 5-4 decision.
Prescott would jump out to the lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings. Paul Knapp hit a solo home run (19) in the third and Ryan Meger homered (14) in the fourth to put the Hot Shots up 2-0.
An Emmitt Hampton solo home run got the Hops on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning. They would tie it up in the fifth on a Bradley York RBI double. Emmitt Hampton would then blast a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, his second of the game and 29th on the year, to put the Hops up 4-2.
But Prescott would respond. Paul Knapp hit a bloop, two-out, RBI single in the seventh to get one run back. Then in the top of the ninth, Matt Olson blasted a solo home run to leadoff the inning, off of closer Vic Miller, to tie the game at 4-4.
Flagstaff wasted no time in the bottom half. Forrest Owen singled to leadoff the inning. David Petrovski then singled to center as Owen advanced to third. With a drawn in infield, Oscar Aleman sent the first pitch back up the middle and Forrest Owen walked home with the game winning run for the Hops.
Vic Miller (4-3) blew the save but picked up the win. Russell Fluty had a solid start, going 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, striking out six. Pedro Macias got the final out in the seventh and worked a scoreless eighth.
The Hops (71-73) now have tomorrow off before a huge six game road trip with two games in Las Vegas (75-69) and four in St George (74-70).
Around the League: St George opened up a key weekend series in Salt Lake with a 12-1 rout of the Chukars. Jamaal McCormack homered (41) and drove in three runs to help lead the Archers to the win as they move two games ahead of Salt Lake.
Rio Ranchos's Richard Gates went 4 for 5 with two home runs (13,14) and drove in five as the Owlz pounded Santa Fe 10-1 to keep their lead of 2.5 games in the ML Central over El Paso. El Paso beat Roswell 4-0 as Mark Donnellon (13-8) threw a complete game two-hitter, striking out two and walking two.
Chandler's Francisco Santiago improved to (17-3), allowing four runs on seven hits in six innings of work as the Chiefs defeated Gilbert 7-5. Three pitchers out of the bullpen combined to get the final nine outs with Jim Miller picking up his 42nd save. Carl Lentzkow went 3 for 5 and drove in two runs to lead the offense. He is now hitting .338 on the year.
Scottsdale's Jaime Pacheco (19-5) tossed eight solid innings, allowing two runs on four hits as the Scorpions destroyed Fresno 13-2. Pacheco struck out six and walked two and leads the Desert League with 19 wins and ERA at 2.45. Jaden Evans went 3 for 4 with two home runs (11,12) and drove in four runs for Scottsdale. The win snapped a four game losing streak for the Scorpions, who lead the DL Central by eight games over Surprise.
Salt Lake rallied late on Sunday afternoon to edge St George 3-1 to move into a first-place tie with the Archers atop the ML West. Darell McCloud's two run home run (23) in the seventh put the Chukars ahead. Salt Lake took two of three in the series. Both teams each have two series left with Colorado Springs which very well may determine the West winner.
