I’m not a Steven Matz fan so you could trade him for a bag of peanuts and I would consider it a great trade

      September 12-15, 2024: FLAGSTAFF (75-75) @ ST GEORGE (77-74)
Stadium: Bank of Utah Park (Capacity: 8,877)

      September 12: Archers 2, Hops 0
      September 13: Hops 8, Archers 6
      September 14: Archers 2, Hops 1
      September 15: Hops 4, Archers 2

St George, UT (AP) - Flagstaff and St George split a huge four game series in Utah over the weekend as the Hops ended their road trip (4-2) that leaves them sitting at .500 with just 12 games left in the season.

St George grabbed the opener of a key four game weekend series on Thursday evening with a 2-0 victory over Flagstaff. Casey Pack (11-7) tossed 8.2 shutout innings, to earn the win and move St George back into a tie for first in the ML West.

All of the scoring in this one came in the second inning. A Fred Roberts RBI double scored Reyes to put the Archers up 1-0. Roberts would then score on a sac fly from Sammy Gomez to make it 2-0.

It would stay that way until the end. Sam Goodman came on with one on and two outs in the ninth and gave up a single to Donnie Roland, but struck out Robbie Westbrook to end the game with the tying runs on base.

Alex Farmer (17-5) took the loss. He went the full eight innings, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out six.

On Friday night, the Hops rallied from an early four run deficit to defeat the Archers 8-6. Emmitt Hampton's three-run home run in the sixth keyed the rally as the Hops once again are at .500.

St George would go up 3-0 in the second off of Juro Yamaguchi. Scottie Hager lined an RBI single that scored Reyes as the Archers grabbed an early lead. Fisher then lined a two-out single to right that scored Sam Robinson and Hager to make it 3-0.

A Donnie Roland solo home run in the third got the Hops offense started. It was his 11th on the season and cut the lead to 3-1. But a Sammy Gomez RBI double in the bottom half put the Archers back up by three.

An Harper Reyes solo home run in the fifth, his 17th, made it 5-1 and it looked like the Archers were going to cruise to a win. But it was not to be.

Emmitt Hampton started the rally with a three-run home run in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 5-4, his 30th on the year. Then in the seventh, David Petrovski (18) and Grant Mitchell (8) each hit solo home run to put Flagstaff in front 6-5.

In the ninth, Robbie Westbrook and Ryan Kelly added RBI singles to push the lead to 8-5.

Vic Miller came on and surrendered a solo home run to ML leader Jamaal McCormack, his 43rd, but was able to lock down his 36th save and the Hops are very much alive in the ML West race.

Juro Yamaguchi (9-11) picked up the win, pitching seven innings and allowing five runs on nine hits, striking out six and walking just one. Pedro Macias worked a scoreless eighth before turning it over to Miller in the ninth.

On Saturday afternoon, the Archers bounced back behind some strong pitching to defeat the Hops 2-1. Tommy Franco (6-10) tossed six complete innings, allowing one run on three hits, striking out eight as the Archers kept pace with Salt Lake.

All the scoring in this game took place in the third inning. The Hops grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top half as Ryan Kelly grounded out to third, allowing David Benitez to score. The Archers would tie it up on a Scottie Hager RBI double. St George would take the lead on an Angel Montes sac fly.

Tommy Franco would give way to the bullpen after six and each reliver worked an inning, striking out two. The Hops struck out 14 times in the game. Every Hop players struck out at least once. Sam Goodman picked up his 37th save for St George.

Russell Fluty (6-13) took the loss, pitching seven innings and allowing two runs on seven hits, striking out five.

In Sunday afternoon's finale, the Hops got a pair of two-run home runs to rally for a 4-2 victory. Rookie Dave Matlock hit his first big league home run in the seventh to break a 2-2 te and send the Hops on to the crucial victory.

The Archers would grab the lead in the second inning on a big two-out, two-run single from Eric Klein.

Flagstaff would tie it up in the fifth on a two-run home run from Ryan Kelly, his 24th on the season. They would take the lead in the seventh on Dave Matlock's two-run shot off of reliever Lamont Lawrence. Lawrence came on in relief of starter Taylor Austin after he gave up a lead off double to Donnie Roland.

The Hops bullpen was great in support of starter Geraldo Rodriguez. Rodriguez pitched five innings, allowing just the two runs on five hits, striking out three and walking three. Samuel Espinoza (2-3) picked up the win out of the bullpen, tossing two scoreless innings. Oliver Benedict pitched a scoreless eighth and Vic Miller send down the Archers in order in the ninth to earn his 37th save.

Flagstaff (75-75) will now return home for a six game homestand against two first place teams in Rio Rancho (87-64) and Salt Lake (78-71). The Owlz have the best record in the Mountain League, while the Chukars have won four straight to take a two game lead over St George in the ML West.

Around the League: Santa Fe's Ron Sposato (13-12) struck out nine, allowing just four hits as he tossed eight shutout innings in a 3-0 victory for the Jays over West Texas. Santa Fe is (8-3) in their last 11 games and is now just three games back of the Javelinas/Kings for the second ML Wild Card spot.

On Friday night, Chandler became the first team this season to clinch a playoff berth as they defeated San Diego 2-1 to clinch the DL East. Mike Anderson (23) and Zach Dossett (31) each hit solo home runs and Mike Miller picked up his 44th save as Chandler (88-59) clinched. They can now get ready for the postseason and get their rotation set with still two weeks left in the regular season.

San Antonio opened up a big three game series in Fort Worth with a 4-1 victory on Friday night to move back into first place in the ML East. Kosuke Matsui went 2 for 4 with a home run (41) to lead the Javelinas. Leo Sanchez (12-5) went eight innings, allowing one run on two hits, striking out nine and walking four.

San Diego picked up a huge win on Saturday afternoon, chasing Chandler's Francisco Santiago (17-4) after he recorded just one out, scoring five times in the first inning, of a 10-3 victory to remain in first in the DL West. Danny Marlin's first inning grand slam (13) keyed the offense for the Seals.

Henderson's Pat Beard went 3 for 5, homering twice (20,21) and driving in five runs as the Silver Knights blanked Fresno 11-0. The Silver Knights are three games back of Long Beach in the Desert League for the final Wild Card spot.

Salt Lake got an RBI double from Derek Hills in the top of the ninth to tie the game and then a solo blast from Darell McCloud (24) in the 11th as they rallied to edge Albuquerque 2-1. That helped the Chukars distance themselves from both St George and Flagstaff in the race to win the ML West.

Dave Matlock's first IBL home run was a big one as it helped win the finale to help Flagstaff earn a split.

Cardinals were swept by the Brewers in a 3 game series in Milwaukee but followed that up by sweeping the Nationals in Washington. Currently sitting a game back of the Brewers who have currently won 9 straight games.

Next up is a 4 game series in St.Louis with the Brewers followed by a 3 game series with the Nationals. Odd scheduling.

Dylan Carlson and Zack Thompson should return this weekend against the Brewers.

              2024 Chicago Cubs 05/21-05/23

Overall Record:34-17 (1st NL Central/2.5 over St. Louis)

              Game Results

              Game 1
              Cubs-7
              Braves-4

              Game 2
              Braves-4
              Cubs-3

              Game 3
              Braves-5
              Cubs-3

Cubs lose second straight series to Braves

In the last two weeks, the Chicago Cubs are 2-4 against the Atlanta Braves. Chicago has also suffered possibly their worst ten game stretch of the season as in their last ten, they are 4-6 good for the second worst in the NL Central. With that, St. Louis is fast approaching and they are the Cubs next opponent with the NL Central lead on the line.

The Cubs won game one behind two Patrick Wisdom homeruns (18,19) with a final score of 7-4.

Wisdom also homered in game two (his 100th of his career) and Shota Imanaga struck out 10 Braves hitters but the Cubs eventually lost in extras after Luis Guillorme executed a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to take the lead in the 10th inning. AJ Minter then came in for the bottom half of the inning and shut down the Cubbies.

Game three started off poorly for the Cubs' starter, Justin Steele who allowed four runs in the first two innings. That was enough as Chicago could only muster three runs in the game despite out hitting Atlanta, 11 to 8.

As mentioned the Cubs will now travel to St. Louis to face off with the Cardinals (36-13/2nd NL Central 2.5 behind Chicago) in the teams' first meeting of 2024.

                September 17-19, 2024: RIO RANCHO (88-66) @ FLAGSTAFF (77-76)
                Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 13,406)

                September 17: Owlz 3, Hops 2 (10)
                September 18: Hops 5, Owlz 3
                September 19: Hops 3, Owlz 2

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - Flagstaff took two of three from the best team in the Mountain League to get above .500 for the first time since early April and to keep their faint playoff hopes alive.

The Hops dropped the opener as they blew a great pitching perfomance from Ryan Pressley and lost 3-2 in ten innings. Eric Pressley's solo home run with two outs in the ninth off of closer Vic Miller sent this one to extras where Rio Rancho pulled it out.

Flagstaff would grab a 1-0 lead in the third as rookie Richie Jackson hit a solo home run (3) to left off of Owlz ace Rollie Flingers. They would extend that lead to 2-0 in the sixth on a Roberto Geronimo RBI double.

Ryan Pressley worked eight innings, allowing just one run on three hits, striking out four. In the eighth, he surrendered a one out triple to Danny Watson, who would then score on a David Dominguez ground out.

In the ninth, Vic Miller came on trying to nail down his 38th save, but after getting the first two batters, he served up a solo home run to Eric Pressley and we were tied at 2-2. It was Pressley's 29th home run on the year and Miller's 10th blown save.

In the tenth, Zach Gallagher singled and advanced to third on a Merton Bannerman single. He would score on a David Dominguez sac fly to put the Owlz up 3-2.

Brian Lopez (2-0) picked up the win, throwing two scoreless innings. Starter Rollie Flingers pitched six innings, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out six and walking one.

On Wednesday evening, the Hops got back on the winning track with a 5-3 victory to even the series and once again return to the .500 mark. Roberto Geronimo led the way, going 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs as Flagstaff tries to stay in the playoff race.

The Hops would go up 3-0 in the third inning. Emmitt Hampton singled home Robbie Westbrook, who had doubled. Roberto Geronimo then homered to left, his 30th on the year.

Zach Gallagher would hit a solo home run off of Alex Farmer in the fourth, his 33rd on the season, to cut the lead to 3-1.

Rookie Dave Matlock would increase the Hops lead in the sixth with a two-run shot off of releiver William Chow. It was his third on the year, and the Hops led 5-1.

Elvis Velasquez hit a solo home run off of Pedro Macias in the eighth, his 20th on the year, to cut into the lead. Bill Olson would add a solo home run in the ninth, but Oliver Benedict was able to close the game out for his seventh save.

Alex Farmer (18-5) picked up the win, throwing six solid innings, allowing one run on five hits, striking out four. Felipe Sosa (9-14) took the loss for the Owlz.

On Thursday afternoon, the Hops got a great pitching performance from Juro Yamaguchi and rode that to a 3-2 victory to win the series as they head into a huge weekend series with Salt Lake.

Rio Rancho would grab the lead in the fourth thanks to some self inflicted damage by Juro Yamaguchi. After getting the first two batters out, he walked Danny Watson and hit Merton Bannerman. David Dominguez then blooped a ball into no man's land in right to score Watson and the Owlz went up 1-0.

Flagstaff had an immediate answer in the bottom half. Thomas Sanders led off with a single, but was thrown out at third on a Roberto Geronimo single. Oscar Aleman singled with two outs. Forrest Owen lined one back up the middle to tie it up as Geronimo came in to score. Phillip Choi then blooped one to right, allowing Aleman to score the go ahead run.

The Hops would add one in the fifth on a Ryan Kelly solo home run, his 25th on the season.

A Merton Bannerman RBI double in the sixth cut the Hops lead to 3-2. But Yamaguchi worked out of trouble, stranding runners at second and third to get out of the inning with the lead intact.

In the eighth, Yamaguchi would turn it over to the bullpen with Samuel Espinoza working the eighth and Vic Miller working a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts to pick up his 38th save. Yamaguchi (10-11) went seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out eight and walking one.

Bert Stokes (12-12) took the loss for Rio Rancho, lasting five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits, with no strikeouts or walks.

Flagstaff (77-76) now host Salt Lake (81-72) for a huge three game weekend series. The Hops trail the Chukars by four games with nine games left and any playoff hopes probably will probably need a Hops sweep.

Around the League: Henderson opened up a huge series in Chandler with a 4-3 victory over the Chiefs. Albert Zambrano homered (37) and drove in a run to help pace Henderson to the series opening win. He has a 17-game hitting streak.

Long Beach got a three-run home run (21) from Adrian Esparza in the sixth inning as they rallied for a 4-2 victory over Las Vegas and into a tie for first in the DL West with San Diego.

Salt Lake dropped the opener of a four game series against last-place Colorado Springs, getting shutout 4-0. Juan Primo (20) and Jacob Myers (3) each hit two-run home runs for the Snow Sox with Chip Wolf (10-8) tossing eight innings, allowing two hits and striking out ten.

Long Beach moved into first-place in the DL West as they opened a huge series in San Diego with a 10-4 victory over Seals ace Matt Campbell. Campbell (15-7) went 5.2 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, striking out six and walking two. Willis (15-12) tossed seven strong innings to pick up the win.

San Antonio's Kosuke Matsui homered to help lead the Javelinas to a 4-2 victory over Albuquerque and move two games up on Fort Worth in the ML East. Kosuke leads the IBL in home runs with 46 and leads the Mountain League in RBIs with 121.

Scottsdale wrapped up the DL Central title in dramatic fashion on Wednesday as they got a Tanner Bell two-out, two-run home run (17) to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, and a Jaden Evans RBI double to walk it off in the tenth as the Scorpions defeated Surprise 5-4 to win their second straight division title.

San Diego's Matt Mulder went 2 for 3 with a home run (27) and five RBIs in a 7-1 win over Long Beach to leave both teams tied atop the DL West.

Salt Lake's Darell McCloud's two-run home run (24) in the bottom of the tenth helped the Chukars to a 5-3 walkoff win over Colorado Springs. Derek Hills solo home run (19) in the bottom of the seventh had tied the ballgame.

St George kept its playoff hopes alive as they rallied to defeat Prescott 5-4 in 13 innings. Jamaal McCormack's three-run home run (44) in the top of the ninth tied the ballgame at 4-4. Eric Klein then won it with a solo home run in the 13th. It was his only hit of the ballgame as he went 1 for 7.

Long Beach took the final game of their big series with San Diego with a wild 16-13 victory in 12 innings. The teams each scored four times in the 11th before Long Beach scored three in the top of the 12th and held on for the win to move into first place. Adrian Esparza homered twice (22,23) and drove in six runs for the Surf Dawgs, while Matt Mulder homered (28) and drove in three for the Seals.

Austin's Rick Singleton homered (36) and drove in five as the Fire Frogs pounded Amarillo 14-0, trying desperately to stay in the Wild Card race in the Mountain League. Kris Jackson (12-7) went the distance, scattering four hits and striking out eight for the Fire Frogs, who have won three straight.

Salt Lake got another walk off victory on Thursday afternoon. This time it was a J.P. Grant two-run single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to send the Chukars to a 5-4 victory over Colorado Springs, their third straight win and seventh in their last eight games. Cubs sweep Cardinals to increase divisional lead

The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals met for the first time in 2024. At the time of the first pitch of game, the two teams were separated by just 2.5 games. After the series and after a sweep, Chicago holds a 5.5 game lead in the division.

Game one saw a matchup between two 34 year old veterns with Sonny Gray taking the mound for St Louis and Kyle Hendricks on the bump for Chicago.

The Cardinals got to Hendricks first in the very first inning when Tommy Edman scored on a Paul Goldschmidt ground out after he hit a double to leadoff the game. Fortunately for Chicago, Hendricks would settle down after that as he eventually went eight full allow just that single run.

The Cubs ended up tying it in the 7th when Patrick Wisdom who has been great as of late bunted a ball toward first base that scored Nico Hoerner who had singled earlier in the inning.

Speaking of Hoerner and Edman, both were great throughout the series. Edman ended up going 5-13 in the series while Hoerner was an even better 6-11.

Game one ended in extra innings after Chicago scored three in the top of the 10th and Adbert Alzolay got his 13th save of the year as he allowed just a single hit in the bottom half of the inning.

Alzolay actually got a save in all three games, a good sign as he has struggled so far this season.

In those saves, Chicago won game two, 4-2 and game three, 5-2.

Patrick Wisdom homered once in the series and tied Austin Riley for the NL lead in that category with his 21st of the year.

Chicago will now travel to Milwaukee for a four game set against the Brewers (27-26/4th NL Central) and will look to repeat their sweep of their divisional foes earlier in the month.

33-33 coming into this; 15-15 at home to boot — pressure is palpable.

Context: I’m mad at Colt Keith here; an error he made earlier in the game is why we’re losing. I almost pinch-hit for him but decided against it.

Furthermore, I stg that bullpen adjustment I make is why this unfolded the way it did. There are no coincidences.

As we approach the 2024 draft and All Star break, the Cardinals have been in a tailspin, only winning 8 games in June and are 1-2 to start July. They are in 1st by 2.5 games over the Cubs and Brewers and the Reds only 3 games and Pirates, 4 games.

GM MizzouRah would add 1B Paul Goldschmidt and RP Kenyan Middleton to the trade block and immediately received calls from a few clubs, specifically Miami and Detroit.

Detroit is looking to add some much needed power to their lineup and they trade SP Matt Manning to the Cardinals for Goldschmidt and Middleton.

This allows the Cardinals to send rookie SP Sean Light back down to AAA and gives them some options once Lance Lynn returns after the AS break.

Brendan Donovan will move from LF to 1B and the Cardinals would call up OF Victor Scott II. Nootbaar will move to LF, Scott to CF, Carlson over to RF. This will allow Tommy Edman to move from CF back to 2B and Gorman moves back to DH.

The Cardinals also sent RP Zack Thompson to AAA and signed veteran RP Jimmy Nelson. Nelson hasn't pitched since 2021, where he had a 1.86 ERA in 29 innings for the Dodgers.

Matt Manning will make his Cardinals debut on Saturday, July 6th vs the Nationals.

Cardinals split series with Brewers in St.Louis

The Cardinals (27-21) split a 4 game series with the Brewers over the weekend at Busch Stadium in St.Louis. The Cardinals are still a single game behind the Brewers, as are the Reds. The Cubs are 4 back and the Pirates 6.5.

The two teams alternated wins with the Brewers winning the first game and the Cardinals the series finale. This was the first series back for Dylan Carlson who racked up 6 hits in the 4 game series with a RBI. Nolan Gorman bruised his ribs and is day to day as injuries continue to plague this Cardinal team, as well as offensive letdowns.

The Cardinals had a great chance of sweeping the series if the offense could've delivered key hits in the later innings.

The Cardinals will now welcome the Nationals to town for a 3 game series before heading back out on the road. The Cardinals swept the Nationals in Washington last week.

Marlins acquire Trevor Story from Red Sox

The Marlins and Red Sox completed the first significant deal of the 2025 season as the Marlins acquired Trevor Story in exchange for Bill Wog, a 19 year old prospect who the Marlins drafted in the 2nd round last year. He was rated as the 4th best prospect in the Marlins organization and the 18th best Starting pitcher prospect in baseball.

Trevor Story still has a massive contract that carries another 2 years after 2025, but the Marlins are eager to add a bat to the lineup as they try to keep pace with the Phillies in the NL East as well as the wildcard hunt.

The Red Sox are having yet another disappointing season, and moving Story's contract off their books is a big help in rebuilding, as is the acquisition of Bill Wog to bolster the team's organizational depth.

It took me until game #80 of my franchise but after countless potential home runs down the line where I get the is it fair is it foul animation, I finally snuck one inside the foul pole and kept it fair for a HR with Pete Alonso. I was starting to think that animation was an automatic foul ball.

The Chicago Cubs (56-38), chasing us in the division made two nice trade moves.

Cubs get: SP Cal Quantrill (6-3, 2.21era, 1.08whip)

Twins sign SP Michael Lorenzen. Sent down SP Griffin Canning. Big help as they push on for division title for second straight year.

                                Cardinals take series with Nationals

The Cardinals (29-22) took 2 games of a 3 game series with the Nationals in St.Louis to begin the week. The Cardinals are still within a game of the Brewers in the Central.

The Cardinals won the first two games of the series, but were unable to complete the sweep on Thursday as the bullpen blew a late game lead. Jordan Walker had an excellent series with 6 hits and 8 RBIs. He is second in the NL in doubles (16)

The bullpen and back end of the rotation (Flaherty and Mikolas) are becoming a growing concern for the Cardinals. As the trade season inches closer, pitching will likely be the forefront of the Cardinals focus to improve the team.
