I desperately need to add young talent that can play 1B as all of my minor league first basemen are 29+ and don't have the skill to make the majors.

During scouting, I heavily poured resources into 1B, C, SP, and OF and found a few prospects that I really liked.

The top player on my board was KENDRICK COATS (OF/SS). In my mind, he was best player available (75-85 potential, overall of at least 70) in the range of where I was drafting (we had the 18th pick and he was ranked in the high 20s according to my scouts).

2a and 2b on my board were REGGIE GUNN (1B/LF, 90-95 potential) and CHARLES ARNESON (1B, 86-91 potential). I don't remember exactly what their projected overalls were but they were very similar.

In the draft, the Rockies took Kendrick Coats at 15 which made my decision much easier: just take the first baseman that I like the most.

I took Reggie Gunn at 18 and the Astros took Charles Arneson at 24.

Once I had everyone signed and got to the view draft picks screen, I was stunned.

Reggie Gunn was a huge bust as was my catcher that I picked up in the third round.

The outfielder that the Rockies snagged before me ended up being an 84 overall with 81 potential, which I guess means that he's good but peaked in college and won't get much better. Still, I'd gladly swap him for Gunn.

The Astros 1B that I passed on is a 89 overall out of the gate with 89 potential. Again, he definitely peaked in college and seemingly won't develop any further but he'd instantly be the best player on my major league squad.

On top of all of this craziness the Marlins somehow were unable to sign a single draft pick!

I'm definitely a little salty about how this draft cycle went but I did have an active trade deadline and was able to flip a lot of expiring contracts for promising prospects. Still, it will be hard to not think about what could have been...
I don't love the draft system in '24 at all. My last draft I just made sure I signed good scouts using the 3 best scout system i saw online, scouting prospects and then let put the draft on auto. I ended up with a decent draft. It's pretty frustrating to me how it works in '24.

That's fair. I definitely think it leaves a lot to be desired but I also don't hate it by any means. I like a lot of the quality of life stuff they've added to it like two-way players, generational prospects, prospects that aren't quite generational but still are MLB-ready right off the bat, and having to sign prospects. It's all steps in the right direction but it doesn't feel fully complete to me yet.

For example, I wish that there was some kind of connection between your budget for players and your draft allocation. While it's cool that there's a signing period, it's kind of inconsequential when you can sign all of your prospects and still have $2 million left over every time. If you're in a budget crunch, it should make you more hesitant to shell out $8 million to a high schooler with 65-97 potential. That $8 million should come out of the same budget that you have for signing free agents to raise the stakes a little bit.

            September 20-24, 2024: FLAGSTAFF (80-76) @ SALT LAKE (81-75)
            Stadium: Deseret Field (Capacity: 17,423)

            September 20: Hops 7, Chukars 3
            September 21: Hops 4, Chukars 3
            September 22: Hops 4, Chukars 0

Salt Lake City, UT (AP) - Flagstaff went to Salt Lake City needing a sweep to have any chance of winning the ML West and that is what they got, taking all three games against the Chukars to run their winning streak to five gives and moving to within one game of the first place Chukars.

The Hops opened the series with an impressive 7-3 victory. They hit six solo home runs, led by catcher Forrest Owen, who blasted two, as the Hops continue their late push to make the playoffs.

Salt Lake would grab a 2-0 lead in the first off of Russell Fluty on a two-run home run from Rafael Geronimo, his 20th on the season.

But Flagstaff answered back immediately as Emmitt Hampton (31) and David Petrovski (19) hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the second to tie the ballgame at 2-2.

The Hops would do it again in the fifth, as Ryan Kelly (26) and Forrest Owen hit back-to-back homers to put the Hops up 4-2. Robbie Westbrook would homer to lead off the seventh (20), and then Forrest Owen added his second of the game (25,26) one batter later to make it 6-2.

Salt Lake would get one back in the bottom of the seventh on a Rafael Geronimo sac fly, but it would not be enough. Flagstaff would add a seventh run in the top of the eighth on a two-out RBI single from Donnie Roland.

Russell Fluty (7-13) went seven innings, allowing three runs on nine hits, striking out one. Kenneth Valdez got the final six outs to help the Hops secure the victory.

Tom Hawk (2-4) took the loss for the Chukars. He pitched five innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, striking out three.

On Saturday afternoon, the Hops held on for a 4-3 victory to move to within two games of the first-place Chukars setting up a huge finale on Sunday afternoon. Grant Mitchell went 2 for 4 with a home run (9), two runs scored and two RBIs to lead the offense.

The Hops would grab the lead in the second on a Grant Mitchell two-run home run off of Len Rainey. The Chukars would get one back in the third on an Elijah Hedgepeth RBI single.

In the fifth, Dave Matlock hit a solo home run to center, his third on the year to extend the lead to 3-1. Matlock, a September call-up, got the start at DH and went 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs.

Salt Lake would get that run back in the bottom half on an Elijah Hedgepeth sac fly to cut the lead to 3-2.

Dave Matlock would come through in the seventh with a big, two-out, RBI single, scoring Grant Mitchell to put the Hops back up by two. A Darrell McCloud RBI double in the eighth cut it to 4-3.

Closer Vic Miller came on in the ninth for the Hops. He gave up a lead off single to David Hernandez, but got Richiue Guerrero to fly out to center and he struck out Robby Payne. Julio Cervantes would line a two-out single to right putting the tying run on second. But Miller would get Elijah Hedgepeth to fly out to center to end it, picking up his 39th save and giving the Hops a chance at a sweep on Sunday afternoon.

Gerald Rodriguez (10-9) picked up the win, going six innings and allowing two runs on five hits, striking out four and walking one. Pedro Macias worked a scoreless seventh with Oliver Benedict allowing the run in the eighth.

Len Rainey (8-9) took the loss, going five innings and allowing three runs on five hits.

On Sunday afternoon, the Hops got a masterful pitching perfomance from Ryan Pressley and enough offense to make that stand up as they swept the Chukars with a 4-0 victory. Pressley (15-10) went seven innings, scattering five hits, while striking out nine and walking one. Pressley has not lost since July 27th when he lost 2-1 to Goodyear, reeling off seven straight wins.

Salt Lake starter Gilberto Guzman made it through the first four innings without allowing a hit, but that all changed in the fifth. David Petrovski doubled to lead off the inning. After Dave Matlock struck out, Donnie Roland doubled home Petrovski to put the Hops up 1-0. Grant Mitchell then doubled to left to score Roland and the Hops went up 2-0.

Emmitt Hampton led off the sixth with a home run to center, his 32nd, to increase the Hops lead to 3-0. An Issac Nettles infield single in the seventh scored Grant Mitchell to put the Hops up by four.

Aldo Osuna worked a scoreless eighth and Pedro Macias a 1-2-3 ninth to complete the sweep and give the Hops real hope that they can sneak into the post-season.

Flagstaff (80-76) will return home to face Prescott (72-84) and Scottsdale (92-64), who has already clinched their division, to close out the regular season. Salt Lake (81-75) will travel to Colorado Springs (64-92) and Prescott (72-84). St George (81-76) is in between the two teams and they will play two in Henderon (81-76) and three in Colorado Springs (64-92) to end the year. Flagstaff is (19-5) in their last 24 games and (34-13) in their last 47. They were 18 games below .500 just after the All-Star game.

Around the League: Long Beach's Kyle Carroll blasted a fourth inning grand slam (27) to help pace the Surf Dawgs to an 8-2 win over Goodyear. That helped them stay in first as San Diego walked it off at home against Surprise 9-8. Matt Mulder hit a solo home run (29) to lead off the ninth to send the home crowd home happy and help keep the Seals just one game back in the DL West.

Austin recorded a second straight shutout, besting Amarillo 2-0 a night after beating them by two touchdowns. Hulk Hoagie (36) hit two-run bomb for all of the scoring in the win. Pat Eveland (7-9) pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout, striking out eight and walking two.

Red-hot Santa Fe got a pinch hit, walk-off RBI double from rookie J.J. White in the bottom of the ninth as they bested Albuquerque 1-0 to move into a tie with Fort Worth for the second Wild Card spot in the Mountain League. The Jays are (7-2) in their last nine as they look to keep their playoff streak alive.

San Antonio moved three games ahead of Fort Worth with a 4-3 victory on Friday night. T.J. Hart went 3 for 4 with a double, home run (32) and two RBIs to pace the Javelinas.

Colorado Springs did the Hops and Chukars a big favor, defeating St George 4-1 Friday night in the opener of a three game series. Mike Rock homered (24) and Mike Stoneridge (3-12) pitched 7.2 solid innings, allowing one run on five hits, while striking out ten.

El Paso clinched a playoff berth on Saturday afternoon with a 9-6 victory over Roswell. Shuheii Takahashi went 4 for 5 with two triples, scoring four runs to pace the Express to the clincher as they look to repeat as Mountain League champions in 2024.

Mesa's Pearson (8-10) tossed a complete game, three-hit shutout, striking out ten, as the Solar Sox completed a three-game road weep of Chandler with a 5-0 victory on Sunday afternoon.

Long Beach's Steve Willis (16-12) tossed a complete game, eight-hit shutout as the Surf Dawgs beat Goodyear 3-0. Willis struck out 12 and walked one as the Surf Dawgs remain tied with San Diego atop the DL West with just six games left.

San Diego's Matt Campbell (16-7) outdueled Surprise's Gus Woodson (13-9) as the Seals shutout the Saguaros 5-0. Matt Mulder homered (30) and drove in a run with Ray Landry lining a first-inning three-run triple to pace the offense. San Diego closes the year with three in Las Vegas and then three in Long Beach.

Fort Worth defeated San Antonio 6-2 on Sunday afternoon, taking two of three from the Javelinas, to move to within a game of first-place. Alex Pena (15-4) tossed six strong innings allowing two run son three hits, striking out eight. Rickey Moran (24) and George Newman (10) each hit two-run home runs for the Kings.

Rio Rancho clinched a playoff berth on Sunday afternoon with a 7-3 victory over Prescott. Rollie Flingers (21-5) solidified his Cy Young resume, tossing eight innings and allowing two run son nine hits, striking out eight. He leads the ML with 252 strikeouts.

St George rallied three times, scoring two in the bottom of the ninth, one in the bottom of the tenth and one in the 11th as they walked it off in a 6-5 victory over Colorado Springs. Jamaal McCormack's solo home run in the 11th won it as the Archers moved to within a half game of Salt Lake for the ML West lead, a half game ahead of Flagstaff.

There is now just one Wild Card spot left in the Mountain League with Fort Worth holding a one game lead over Santa Fe and a two game lead over Austin. Over in the Desert League, the DL West loser (San Diego/Long Beach) likely gets one Wild Card with Surprise holding the second one, but only leading Mesa by one game now as the Solar Sox have won five straight and eight of nine.

Cubs split sea-saw four game series with San Francisco

For what its worth, with the season series now over, Chicago wins it 4-3.

Game one saw a matchup between Shota Imanga and Robbie Ray. In what was a pretty bad start for Imanaga, the Giants got to him early four runs in the first two innings. They scored two in each inning and each run came via the homerun. The first two were hit by Matt Chapman (6) and Jorge Soler (11). The third was hit in the second inning and was hit by the Giants #10 prospect Will Wilson. Being as it was hit debut, it was also his first MLB at bat and he took Imanage deep for a two run homerun to at the time give the Giants the 4-0 lead. But then, it was the Cubs turn to get to Ray and they did for six runs combined in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings.

The Cubs first two runs came in the third and also came via a homerun. Theirs came from Michael Busch that also knocked in Ian Happ who had singled earlier in the inning. The fourth inning saw Dansby Swanson hit a triple and he was later driven in by a Yan Gomes sac liner into right with Swanson just beating out Jorge Soler's throw to home.

The Cubs then scored three in the fifth to take the lead 6-4. Unfortunately, once San Francisco's bullpen took over, Chicago wouldn't get another run. The Giants ended up tying it with two more runs off of Imanaga and then won it when Keegan Thompson and his low 1's ERA gave up two runs as the Giants took the first game 8-6.

From there, the Cubs won game two, the Giants won game three and the Cubs won Game 4 as the teams split the series.

The Cubs will now start their last series of June as they travel to Milwaukee to take on the Brewers (43-39/4th NL Central).

I'm 41 games in and Olson is hitting .341 with 19 homers and 48 RBIs. He's on pace to break the single-season home run record and challenge the single-season RBI record. Acuna isn't far behind, hitting .347 with 15 homers and 41 RBIs. He also has 16 SBs, so he has a chance for a 60-60 season.

I've thought about giving Legend a shot, but I'll probably just stick with HOF for now and see how it goes. We're 29-12, which is just percentage points ahead of the Rangers and Dodgers for best record in MLB.
That's a tough one, but I say just go for breaking records lol

My draft class. Exceptional top to bottom. The #1 pick is going to be exciting to play with as Elly De La Cruz shifts to the OF in 2025.

I'll definitely change his name though. Gaylord isn't going to cut it [emoji23]

Reds resign two key parts of the future

Sign Elly De La Cruz to 3yr/$4.74mil deal

Sign Matt McLain to a 3yr/$4.04mil deal

Reds actively working on deals for SP and Cy young candidate Nick Lodolo.

Steer, Friedl, and Andrew Abbott also working out extensions. Would like to bring back Tanner Scott and Elias Díaz if we can afford it.

                                2025 World Series: Game #1

The Cardinals used timely hitting and great defense as they won Game #1 of the 2025 World Series 6-2. Brendan Donovan led the way for the toasted ravioli lovers by going 3 for 4 with 2 triples, 1 double, and 2 RBI. The Royals' best performance was by Anthony Satander. He was 3 for 3 with a HR.
