Cardinals sweep Braves in Atlanta to start 2nd half of season

The Cardinals (54-46) swept the Braves in a 3 game series in Atlanta to begin the 2nd half of the season. The Cardinals are now tied with the Brewers atop the NL Central. The Reds are 2 GB and the Cubs are 3 GB.

What a wild series this turned out to be. The Cardinals came back from a 8-2 hole in the 8th inning to tie the game at 8-8. The Braves then scored one in the bottom of the inning, making it 9-8 in the 9th. With 2 outs, Brendan Donovan hit a solo shot into the right field seats with one on to give the Cardinals a 10-9 lead heading to the bottom half. The Braves weren't done, as Orlando Arcia lined a 2 strike single back up the middle scoring Michael Harris to tie the game at 10. In the 10th, Paul Goldschmidt would end his zero hit day with a solo shot to dead center to make it 11-10. Genesis Cabrera would strike out the side to end the game.

Saturday was less back and forth but again the Cardinals overcame a late inning deficit. Down 4-2 in the 8th, the Cardinals scored 7 runs including a Willson Contreras grand slam to go up 9-4, which would evaporate to 9-6 before Ryan Helsley closed it out.

Sunday was just a good ol fashioned pitching matchup between Jack Flaherty and Spencer Strider. Both carried no hitters into the 6th, where both lost it, and both left the game giving up just the single hit and no runs. The Cardinals would get a sac fly in the 9th off of Iglesias to go up 1-0, the final score. Matt Foster, claimed off waivers during the break, would close the door for the series sweep.

The Cardinals will now travel to Pittsburgh for a 3 game series with the Pirates.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Braves and Dodgers Split Exciting Series

        September 13-16, 2024

Easily the two best teams in baseball, the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers put on quite a shot in a four-game set in Atlanta.

The opener was as exciting a baseball as you'll see, showcasing exactly what a potential NLCS matchup could look like between the two juggernauts. The game started out great for Atlanta as a two-run homer from Matt Olson (50th) and a solo shot from Orlando Arcia off of Yoshinobu Yamamoto were the highlights of a 5-0 lead. Chris Sale was dominant through three, but then the wheels fell off as he gave up six runs over his next six outs, including homers to Will Smith and Mookie Betts. A second set of homers from Olson (51) and Arcia would keep the Braves up by a score of 7-6 through six innings, but a Freddie Freeman homer would be joined by Teoscar Hernandez knocking in Max Muncy off of Joe Jimenez and Tyler Matzek would see the Dodgers with an 8-7 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Arcia would open with a double, followed by a walk from Michael Harris. Ronald Acuna would single to right, but Arcia would be thrown out at home by Andy Pages. Austin Riley would walk to load the bases with one out. Olson, who already had two homers, would strikeout off of Alex Visea. With two outs, Ozzie Albies would find a way to sneak a hit to left field to score both Harris and Acuna. Now up 9-8, Chris Martin and Raisel Iglesias put the bullpen on their backs and closed out the win.

The second game saw another onslaught of runs from each team, as Charlie Morton (3.2 IP, 6 ER) and Tyler Glasnow (5 IP, 6 ER) just could not stop these offenses. The Braves would score twice more off of Dustin May, but the Dodgers were now outdone, scoring runs off Huascar Ynoa and Dylan Lee to keep things tied at 8-8 heading into the ninth, where Shohei Ohtani and Max Muncy would pick up RBIs back-to-back in an eventual 10-8 win. The Braves got homers from Albies and Marcell Ozuna, while Acuna notched three RBI with a double and triple. Sean Murphy also added three hits and scored twice in the loss.

The Braves would rebound in game three as Bryce Elder dominated Los Angeles over 7.1 innings of scoreless ball. He was rewarded with a victory after the offense also totaled five runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings, culminated by aa two-run homers by Riley (his 52nd of the year). Clayton Kershaw was really good through four innings before the big blow by Riley unraveled him a bit. Ozuna also notched a homer, while Jarred Kelenic got two doubles.

The fourth game saw Spencer Strider (7 IP, 2 ER, 9 Ks) and Bobby Miller (8.1 IP, 1 ER) duel it out, but Atlanta found a way to tie the game in the ninth at 2-2 thanks to a Murphy two-run homer to send the game to extra innings. Things went bad for Atlanta though, as the Dodgers got homers from Betts and Ohtani as part of a five-run outburst in a 7-2 win in what was the finale of an excellent overall series.

Olson's two homers in the opener make him the first player in franchise history with two 50-homer seasons. He and Riley are the only players in baseball to have hit the mark so far this season.

Up next for Atlanta (103-48) is a trip to play the exciting Cincinatti Reds (78-73). The Reds swept the Braves in Atlanta in their only other matchup this season.

For sure! I was surprised to see him that late.

I keep thinking that if this year doesn't work out, I might start a rebuild, but everytime my team struggles they find a way to turn it back around. It should be interesting with a solid farm system too...it definitely keeps me locked in to this franchise instead of potentially starting a new one.

I'm trying to get in as many games in as I can, but apparently newborns take up a lot of time and energy....who knew!?

Lol I have a 9, 6yr old, and a 7 month old so I understand. A lot of late night gaming if I want to get my gaming sessions in.

Anyways, hopefully your CP prospect turns into the next greatest closer. I'm excited with the Reds franchise having a lot of good young MLB talent and the #2 overall pick for 2024.

Atlanta Falls in Another Series With the Reds

              September 17-19, 2024

The Atlanta Braves have had a tougher start to September after clinching the NL East heading into it, going 7-6 before a three game series with the Cincinatti Reds, where things would get worse. After being swept in their last series with the Reds, the Braves fell in two of three here.

The first game was a really good game where the Braves got off to a fast start, the Reds bounced back to tie it and then win it in extra innings. Atlanta scored five runs in the first four innings, including homers from Michael Harris and Austin Riley, but would fail to scratch a run across the rest of the game. Max Fried looked good, giving up one through the first four innings, but then a four run third that featured homers from Spencer Street and Stuart Fairchild would dampen the outing. In a contract year, Fried now currently has a 4.39 ERA and the big pay just doesn't seem likely at this point. Things would go to the 10th with the score still tied at 5-5 when Steer would knock in Elly De La Cruz for the walkoff win.

Atlanta got an outstanding outing from Chris Sale in the second game, badly needed after a lot of bullpen arms were used in the opener. Sale completed seven innings, giving up a single run while striking out eight. Atlanta scored three runs in the seventh off of a two-run triple from Ozzie Albies and an RBI single from Ronald Acuna to pull off a 4-1 win that also included a David Fletcher RBI.

Things went back down south for Atlanta in the rubber match, as Charlie Morton (4 IP, 4 ER) and Huascar Ynoa (3.1 IP, 2 ER) would struggle to hold the Reds offense back, while the offense only managed three runs off of three solo homers from Harris (two of them) and Matt Olson.

Now at just .500 for the month, Atlanta (104-50) still holds the top spot in the NL record-wise, but needs to win six of their last eight to hit the 110 win mark for the season. Up next is a three game set at Miami to take on the 68-85 Marlins.

The Braves Pitch Their Way to Sweep of Marlins

Badly needing to get hot again, the Atlanta Braves surprisingly got hot not because of the bats, but because they finally got elite pitching for an entire series again.

The opener was all Bryce Elder, who only gave up two runs in six innings before a bullpen trio of Dylan Lee, Chris Martin, and Raisel Iglesias didn't allow a single baserunner the final three innings. The Braves offense scored five runs on nine hits, getting RBIs from Michael Harris, David Fletcher, Jarred Kelenic, and a pair from Orlando Arcia.

Spencer Strider toyed with a perfect game, getting the first 20 batters out before eventually finishing with three hits and one run allowed in eight innings of work while striking out 12. The offense only mustered five hits in this one, but three went for homers from Harris, Austin Riley, and Matt Olson. Riley's 54th homer ties Olson's franchise record from a season ago, while Olson is right behind him with 53. Raisel Iglesias did give up a run, but got the save in a 3-2 win.

Max Fried almost let another inning get away from him, but worked out of a bases loaded with one out situation in the sixth inning in the third game, finishing with seven scoreless innings. Marcell Ozuna provided an RBI double while Travis d'Arnaud left the yard, setting up AJ Minter for the hold and Iglesias for his third save of the series in a 2-0 win.

The sweep of Miami gives them a season record of 10-3 against the Marlins. Now with five games left on the season, the Braves are currently three games ahead of the Dodgers for the top record in the NL (and baseball) at 107-50, and a winning record over those five games will give them at least 110 on the season. Up next is the final two game set of the season with the New York Mets (66-91).

Re: MLB The Show 24 Franchise Mode Discussion Thread

I’m looking at a couple trades for my Pirates franchise. Going after expiring contracts rental players. Maybe resign. I’m tied for first with the Cardinals after the all star break. I thought about Pete Alonso as the Mets are 4th in the NLEast and 10 games back. They want too much and I don’t have enough prospects year 1 yet.

I’m looking for pitching, an infield player that can hit righties for power and just an overall high contact hitter.

Trevor Rogers was on the block already when I was looking to do a package for Luis Arraez. Here’s what I’ve come up with so far. I don’t want to fleece the cpu. Tyler O’Neill is having a bad year on a bad Redsox team but he’s got some versatility and speed that I need for a bench player and Michael Taylor is hurt.

Yoan Moncada is interesting because he’s got the bat I’m looking for a good fielder. I’ve been thinking of moving O’Neill Cruz to the outfield, Triolo to SS for better defense and then Moncada to 2B?

Any help with making my mind up and suggestions are welcome.

Re: MLB The Show 24 Franchise Mode Discussion Thread

Got my franchise set up nearly a month ago, but wasn't able to actually play any games until the other day. Better late than never!

Braves open 2024 taking two of three from Phillies
Pretty good opening weekend for the Braves as they took two of three from NL East rival Philadelphia on the road.

Matt Olson hit a pair of home runs on Opening Day to lift the Braves to a 5-2 win. Ronald Acuna Jr. homered and stole a base to get his quest for a 50-50 campaign under way.

Olson homered again to highlight a five-run sixth inning as the Braves took the second game, 7-4. Michael Harris and Jarred Kelenic also homered for Atlanta. Bryce Harper hit his first homer of the season for the Phillies.

Ranger Suarez shut down Olson, and Kyle Schwarber homered and had an RBI single as the Phillies salvaged the series finale, 3-2. Ozzie Albies hit a ninth-inning homer for the Braves.

It wasn't a stellar start for the NL East. The Mets are 1-2 while the Marlins and Nationals were both swept to start the season. If you're keeping track, that means the Pirates (who swept Miami) are an MLB-best 4-0 to start the year.

                      Thoughts ...

For whatever reason, 23 just never felt right to me. I don't think I played 20 games before I gave up. In a really small sample size, 24 feels ... perfect to me! Absolutely loving the gameplay so far. Hit variety has been great. Playing default HOF/Competitive, the CPU makes me pay for mistakes, but I'm also able to make the CPU pay for its mistakes.

I'm a Classic or die guy on the mound. I usually play with the cursor off, but I have it on fade at the moment. And I'm still walking guys! I think I walked eight in the series. One was an IBB to Harper and another might as well have been intentional. But in the second game, the Phillies has Turner on second with two out and Harper on deck. The last thing I wanted to do was walk Merrifield, yet I did. Beautiful. And if pitching eventually becomes too easy (which it probably will), I'll simply turn the cursor off again. Really really happy with the game so far this year.

If I had '24, I would definitely love to do a franchise with the Reds. The temptation to buy either 23 or 24 is high but I'm so into this Nationals franchise that I get confused when I'm listening to actual MLB baseball. It's a hot mess, but an enjoyable one all the same.

Maybe a bit young for who you're chasing and a divi rival, but 2B Johnathon India from Reds?

or my fav i usually always trade for, Kike Hernandez. Plays all the positions and has a knack for some of the most clutch hits i've ever had on The Show.

I've used Moncada a bit, and his defense on the hot corner is pretty average tbh. Lots of booted balls and scuffed throws.

Braves Split Two Game Series With Mets, Prepare For End of Regular Season

                            September 24-25, 2024

The Atlanta Braves have entered the last week of the season looking for history, as the 110-win mark has been on their minds all of September along with getting the first seed in the playoffs over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The two-game set with the New York Mets did not overly help matters, however.

The opener was an instant classic. Austin Riley got the party started with his 55th homer of the season, a franchise record, in the first inning. The offense would stall from there, while Chris Sale was largely dominant. Sale did make two mistakes, and the Mets made him pay though. Pete Alonso hit a solo homer to join Harrison Bader's two-run shot of his own. Another tacked on run in the sixth chased Sale after 5.1 innings, allowing four runs, but also striking out eight batters. Down 4-1, the Braves kept plugging away. Reynaldo Lopez and Chris Martin combined for 3.2 innings with no base runners allowed and five strikeouts. Jarred Kelenic knocked in Ozzie Albies with a SAC fly in the seventh to make it 4-2, but the Braves got to their final three outs against Edwin Diaz with the same score. Riley would reach on a single, Matt Olson would battle for a walk in a 10 pitch at bat, and Albies would take the first pitch for a no-doubt walkoff homer in a 5-4 win.

The opposite essentially happened in the other matchup, as the Mets got up early thanks to a Francisco Alvarez homer before Michael Harris tied it with a homer of his own the following inning. The Mets would take the lead again in the fifth thanks to a Francisco Lindor homer, but the Braves would score two in the bottom of the inning with Olson and Marcell Ozuna getting RBI singles. DJ Stewart would knock in a run for the Mets in the seventh to tie, and Ronny Mauricio would take a Tyler Matzek pitch deep for the eventual winning run in a 4-3 loss for Atlanta. Charlie Morton put together a quality start with six innings and allowing three runs, but the bats were cold and didn't give him the support needed as the Mets bullpen trio of Jose Butto, Austin Adams, and Edwin Diaz were lights out behind starter Jose Quintana.

In the final series of the season, the 108-51 Braves will stay at home to play the 66-93 Kansas City Royals. If the Braves win the series, they will hit the vaunted 110-win mark, but the most important thing is keeping the top seed. Currently, the Braves are one game up on the Dodgers for that, as Los Angeles is 107-52.

I'm super biased cause I hated 23 and felt it was broken so definitely purchase 2024 if you do choose to buy one lol.
