Cardinals take down Dodgers to advance to the National League Championship Series

The Cardinals are moving on to the NLCS for the first time since 2025 as they beat the Dodgers in the National League Divisional Series, 3-1.

The Cardinals won Games 1 and 2, lost Game 3, but hung on to win Game 4 and close out the series.

The Cardinals were aided by the fact that Bobby Miller and Royce Lewis missed the series due to injuries. The Cardinals were also aided by Mason Wynn who again was the series MVP.

The Cardinals will move on to face their rival, the Cincinnati Reds who swept the Braves in the other NLDS matchup.

In the American League, the Rangers beat the Yankees 3-1 and the Red Sox beat the Twins 3-1 to set up the ALCS. The Rangers, who won the 2028 World Series, are looking to get back to the Fall Classic in hopes of repeating.

2025 Chicago Cubs All Star Break

Overall Record: 66-32 (1st NL Central/14.0 over Milwaukee)

        Game Results:

        Game 1
        Cubs-6
        Braves-0

        Game 2
        Braves-5
        Cubs-4

        Game 3
        Braves-5
        Cubs-1

Braves get the better of the Cubs as 'first half' comes to a close

The Cubs lost their final series before the All Star break and thus far in July, it has been their only series loss.

Daniel Palencia was great again and has improved to 4-0 on the season. This start wasnt as electric as his first after jumping into the rotation with Shota Imanaga's injury but it was still very good. He finished this one with 6.0 IP, 2 H, 1 BB and 5 SO.

Meanwhile, the offense was led by a couple of relief players Dominic Smith and Miguel Amaya who were in on rest days for Josh and Bo Naylor. Both Dominic (2) and Miguel (5) homered while Dominic had his best game of the season with three hits and three total rbis as the Cubs won it, 6-0.

Game two wasnt nearly as good for the current front runner for the NL Cy Young, Justin Steele. He gave up three in the first with the first run coming on his very first pitch of the game to Michael Harris II. The Cubs fought back however and got three of their own in the bottom of the 5th while Steele settled in and made it through 8 innings without allowing another run. The Cubs even took the lead in the eighth inning when Juan Soto hit his astounding 43rd homerun of the season. Unfortunately however, Tanner Scott could not complete the save as Marcel Ozuna took him deep to tie the game. The Braves then went on to score in the 10th while the Cubs could not as the Braves took the 5-4 victory.

Game three was all Atlanta as they won 5-1 and out hit the Cubbies 10-5.

The Cubs go into the break as the best team in baseball (66-32). They are followed by The AL Central leading Minnesota Twins (63-35), the AL East leading Tampa Bay Rays (62-36), and the tied NL East leaders, the Atlanta Braves (61-35) and the Philadelphia Phillies (61-35).

Are there any big suprises at the break? Not really but the Yankees (44-52) and Red Sox (42-56) are 4th and 5th in the AL East.

The Cubs will head to Philly to take on the Phillies (61-36) after the All Star Break.

Cardinals season ends to the Reds in the National League Championship Series

The Cardinals 2029 season has come to an end as they lost to the Reds in 6 games in the NLCS. The Reds will move on to face the Rangers in the World Series. The Rangers are looking to repeat as champions.

The Reds won the first 2 games of the series in Cincinnati but the Cardinals were able to win Game 3 to make it series again in St.Louis. Critical Game 4 went to the Reds who absolutely destroyed Max Fried and the Cardinals pitching staff with a 17-3 win. But the Cardinals would turn to Gerrit Cole in Game 5 who would help the Cardinals to a 6-0 victory sending the series back to Cincinnati for an all important Game 6.

Louis Turnwall got the ball, but he just wasn't himself and the bats did nothing to help as the Cardinals fell to the Reds 5-0, ending their 2029 season.

Not to make excuses, but the Cardinals missed Nolan Gorman for the first two games due to a wrist injury and lost Mason Wynn in Game 1 due to a torn ACL. Wynn was key for the Cardinals earlier in the playoffs.

The Cardinals will now turn their attention to the offseason as they look to fill a few holes in hopes of another trip to October in the 2030 season.

              Cardinals 2029 Offseason Outlook

The Cardinals had a great bounce back season in 2029 after missing the playoffs the previous two years. They won 99 games and advanced to the NLCS before losing to the Reds who would be the eventual World Series Champions.

The Cardinals have some work to do this offseason in order to not only get back to October, but to also make a run back to the NLCS and past that.

The Cardinals first major task this winter will be resigning 3B/OF Jordan Walker. Walker didn't have the best seasons last year, but he got better late in the year and in October. He has drastically improved his defense at 3rd base and is a hitting machine at the dish. This will be top priority this winter.

After that, they have decisions to make. Do they re-sign Dylan Carlson? Pick up their club option on Ryan Helsley? Do they look to trade an aging veteran arm like Max Fried who is owed $20M this upcoming season?

What do they do with Tyler Holton and Eli Morgan? Try to re-sign and keep the bullpen intact or do they turn the ball over to younger arms like Brandon Kidd and Tommy Sanchez? Andre Pallante is another bullpen arm they have a decision to make this winter.

After the internal decisions, the Cardinals must decide what to do about their pitching staff. Walker Buehler will not have his option picked up and while Gerrit Cole pitched well, the Cardinals aren't interested in bringing him back as he dealt with injuries and consistency down the stretch.

The bullpen lacked depth last year, but the Cardinals expect that to change come next spring. Brycen Mautz pitched well in October, and Brandon Kidd is one of the highest rated reliever prospects in the game. So expect them to be at Spring Training with a good chance to make the roster.

The Cardinals also must decide if they believe in Chase Davis to man left field this upcoming season or do they move on, keep Nootbaar out there and then try to groom a replacement. If they keep Davis and re-sign Carlson, do they trade Nootbaar? And what about Alec Burleson? He's a free agent this winter that the Cards are high on, but with his limited defensive abilities and Yordan Alvarez manning the DH spot, do they let him walk? Re-sign and trade? Hold for depth?

2nd base is another position open this winter. Branden Donovan has served the Cards well, but its time to move on with so much young talent waiting in the minors. Christopher Frazier, Samuel Franco, JJ Wetherholt, and possibly Cesar Prieto are all going to get a chance this spring to take that spot.

A lot for the Cardinals to determine this winter as they prepare for Spring Training and the upcoming 2030 season. One thing we know is everyone has a plan, but then something happens (Yordan Alvarez signing last winter) and everything changes.

Cardinals strike out during exclusive free agent signing period

The Cardinals had two main objectives during the exclusive negotiation period, sign Jordan Walker and Dylan Carlson. Neither happened and both hit the free agent market.

The Cardinals were confident they could reach a deal with both during the period, but both decided to see what the open market would bring. The Cardinals offered Jordan Walker a 4 year $80MM deal and Carlson a 2 year $20MM deal.

The Cardinals did get LHP Tarik Skubal to exercise his player option of $29MM to return next year. They also picked up the $14M club option on RHP Ryan Helsley.

LHP John King and RHP Walker Buehler had both of their options declined.

Not what the Cardinals had planned to start the winter, but now the nerves have kicked in and its time to make something happen.

                Juan Soto re-signs with Phillies

One of the biggest stars in the game and a prized potential free agent won't hit the open market as Juan Soto re-signed with the Phillies on an 8 year $203MM deal. The Phillies were considered a favorite to win the NL Pennant last year, but injuries to stars like Shane McClellan and Bryce Harper really hurt the team.

With those two healthy and the return of Soto, its likely the Phillies will again be NL favorites this coming season.

Cardinals re-sign Jordan Walker and Masyn Winn

The Cardinals got their first breath of relief yesterday when they re-signed 3B/OF Jordan Walker to a 4 year $80MM deal. This will mean that Walker will hit free agency again at the age of 30. The 27 year old struggled a bit last year coming off a knee injury that ended his 2028 season around the all-star break, but did play well in September and October. He will likely return to the hot corner, but there is always the slight chance with his size and arm, they move him back to RF should they not convince Dylan Carlson to return.

The Cardinals also signed SS Masyn Winn to a one year deal for $8MM avoiding arbitration. The Cardinals tried to convince Winn to sign a long term deal, but the 26 year old wants the opportunity to entertain the idea of free agency next winter.

Both signings are huge for the Cardinals who will likely now turn their attention to Dylan Carlson hoping to get him to re-sign, while searching the pitching market for help.

                  Other signings of note

Rays sign LF Evan Carter to 8 year $310MM deal
Astros sign SP Grayson Rodriguez to 6 year $198M deal

I’m craving some baseball so I have decided to start a new franchise with the Oakland Athletics.
Boy oh boy this is going to be difficult. The roster isn’t good at all, and nothing really in the minors. Going to simulate the 2024 season, and start in ‘25. Hopefully I can draft well and land some players in the offseason. Wish me luck!

Cubs suffer longest losing streak of season but avoid first sweep

It doesn't look great. The Cubs have been dominate this year but just staved off a sweep by the Phillies and before that, lost four in a row between Philadelphia and Atlanta, two of the top contenders for the NL crown.

The Cubs lost the final two games against the Braves and their first two against the Phillies. Three of those losses were by just one run and two game in extra innings. The extras came in game two versus the Phillies and the Cubs were able to score in their half of the inning to take the 6-5 lead. Tanner Scott was then brought in to close it out and...well he couldnt. Nick Castellanos hit a double to bring in the tieing run and then JT Realmuto hit one off of the rightfield wall to bring in Tyrone Taylor who had ran for Castellanos at second.

Scott was able to get the save in game three which is a relief as he has been far from automatic in that role after he was one of the Cubs big free agent signings. So far, he has six blown saves in 29 attempts. Last seasons closer Adbert Alozolay faced his struggles and was eventually traded to the White Sox. Carl Edwards JR was brought in as the Cubs closer after that and had 18 saves in 19 chances. Is it time to put him back in that role? That could happen for sure if Scott continues to struggle.

In other news, Juan Soto hit three homeruns in the series and now sits at 46 on the year. He is currently on pace to break Barry Bonds' record.

The Cubs will stay on the road for three against the Nationals (34-65/5th NL East).

Guys, I apologize...I've played a total of 1 game since my last update...which feels like months ago. I've been engrossed in FC25, since I've fallen in love with soccer/football this year. But I think it's high time to revive the Nationals franchise. Baseball has been and always will be my game, so...Nationals, MLBTS 22...let's go!
