Re: MLB The Show 24 Franchise Mode Discussion Thread

Lost to Seattle in the ALCS in 6 games. Got cocky after taking the first game 15-5. Every game after that was decided by 1 run.

Arizona beat Seattle for the championship.

Time to start a new throwaway franchise until 25 comes out. Thinking Pittsburgh.

Re: MLB The Show 24 Franchise Mode Discussion Thread

Been a long time since I've posted in here. Basically took the fall off from gaming (again) and that included MLB 24. But I'm trying to get through at least one season before 25 comes out ... and I'm still thinking about just rolling with 24, but we'll see. So I'm back to my Braves dynasty.

Knocked out a few games the last few days. My Braves are 63-23 in early July, tied with the Dodgers (64-24) for the best record in MLB. The Phillies are 8.5 games back and coming into town for a three-game series.

The Twins had Willi Castro on the block. Switch-hitter with some speed who can play just about everywhere? Yeah, that's my perfect utility guy. So despite him hitting just .183 on the season, we acquired him. Huascar Ynoa went back to the Twins in the deal.

We sent Castro down to Gwinnett to work on his swing. In the meantime, we're trying to open up a roster spot on the big-league club by moving either David Fletcher or Charlie Culberson. We'd REALLY like to move Fletcher and that contract of his.

I'll follow up once I hit the ASB.

        2025 Chicago Cubs 08/04-08/07

Overall Record: 75-42 (1st NL Central/11.5 over Milwaukee)

        Game Results:

        Game 1
        Cubs-5
        Braves-3

        Game 2
        Braves-10
        Cubs-7

        Game 3
        Braves-12
        Cubs-6

        Game 4
        Braves-4
        Cubs-1

        Cubs drop second straight series

The Cubs have now lost both of their first two series in August (1-2 to Padres and 1-3 to Braves). The Braves series is also the Cubs second in a row to lose to the team that looks to be their biggest threat to their second straight National League Championship. Chicago last lost a series to Atlanta in July just before the all star break when they won just one of the three games in that series.

This series also saw Chicago give up double digit runs in two consecutive games. That is something they haven't done all year. In fact, they had only allowed 10 or more runs once prior to the two in games two and three in Atlanta.

The Cubs did win game one but that took extra innings after Atlanta tied it up at two each in the eighth inning off of an Austin Riley pinch hit rbi single and another rbi single from Ronald Acuna JR. The Cubs still got the victory however as they scored three in the top half of the 10th while Tanner Scott held the Braves to a single run.

Games two and three saw Atlanta torch a couple of Chicago pitchers who have been great. First, Daniel Palencia gave up seven runs in just five innings . His offense tried to keep the hopes for a win alive as they also scored seven of their own but Atlanta had other ideas as they scored three more to eventually take the game, 10-7. Atlanta scored in every inning besides the 2nd and 3rd. They also had six homeruns from six different players, Ronald Acuna Jr, Austin Riley, Sean Murphy, Nick Maton, Paul Dejong and Victor Robles.

Shota Imanaga is still trying to find his feet after returning from his month + stint on the IL. That footing didn't come in game two as he was also hit hard and often. He too gave up seven runs but in only 3.1 innings. Austin Riley and Ronald Acuna JR kept it going with two homeruns each.

Both offenses took a bit of a break in game four but Chicago was completely stifled by Spencer Strider and company. Strider himself pitched six, allowed just three hits and 1 run. Justin Steele was better than Imanga and Palencia but still gave up four while the Cubs failed to add anything after Strider exited the game as the Braves took game four, 4-1 and the series, 3-1.

The Cubs are now just 2-5 to start August and will look to get things turned around as they travel to Cincinnati to take on the Reds (56-59/5th NL Central).

Cardinals finish May with 29-30 record

The Cardinals struggles continue as they finished the month of May with an overall record of 29-30 which is puts them 8 games back of the Pirates and 5 games out of the final wildcard spot.

Its been just about everything for the Cardinals, poor pitching, poor hitting, poor defense, poor managing, and poor baseball IQ. If there is a way to lose a game the Cardinals have found it.

The middle of the month it appeared things were turning around for the better as the Cardinals won 7 straight games. But that success was short lived as the Cards enter June having lost 5 straight, including two straight shutouts.

The Cardinals will look to turn things around in June, as this month should point to which direction the Cardinals will go when July and the trade deadline. If things are then as they are now, its likely the Cardinals will be sellers at the deadline.

Re: MLB The Show 24 Franchise Mode Discussion Thread

Tried to restart my Orioles save but was too worried about it being the same as the one I lost. Feel dumb complaining about it, given the circumstances out here in LA. All I got was a power outage and a lost save file.

So started a new save with opening day rosters with LAA. I'm a month in after playing 1 game of every series. Here are 3 of the more entertaining games.

Red Sox Wish They Played The Angels Everyday
The Boston Red Sox are 6-10 on the young season, 4 of those wins have come against The Angels. The final game of the series though had to be the most painful for LA as the game was a back and forth duel. But in the end they will have nightmares of Connor Wong who is on a heater. A 3 run HR (4) in the 8th off Herget, and an RBI single in the bottom of the 9th off Matt Moore won Boston the game and the series.
Johnny Cueto left the game up 2 with 6 K's in 7 IP. Unfortunately a common occurrence for LA is that the relievers can't close out the game. The Angels will head to St. Pete for a series against Tampa Bay.

            LAA (8-9) @ TB (7-11)
Tyler Anderson proved vital with 8 K's and Miguel Sano is revitalizing his career one at bat at a time. Sano was 3/4 with a run scored. Jo Adell is having a breakthrough start as well as he hit a leadoff HR in the 1st, his 4th of the season. The issue for LA is the poor fielding, specifically Luis Rengifo who took over at SS for a Neto day off. He had back to back errors (7), while Hunter Dozier at 3B has 4 of his own. Thankfully Tampa's Aaron Civale gave up 7 hits and 3 runs in 5 innings.

            LAA (10-11) @ Cincy (12-9)
Reid Detmers had a no hitter through 3 while Miguel Sano crushed a HR (2) and Taylor Ward followed it up (1). Cincinnati got 3 of their own but the rally ended when ice cold Elly de LA Cruz struckout looking (.157 avg).

            April
            LAA (14-16)
W: 4 straight once, against TB.
L: 3 straight 3 seperate times, swept by Boston (11-19) and Baltimore (19-10)
HR team leaders: Neto (6), Trout (6), Adell (6), Dozier (4).
            RBI team leaders: Adell (19), Neto (15), Dozier (14), Rengifo/Trout (10)
Last game of the month and Jo Adell is headed to I.L. for the remainder of the season after sliding into 2nd base and tearing his ACL.

Cub's nightmare start to August continues

The Chicago Cubs may still be 30 games over .500 but August continues to be a nightmare the they aren't navigating very well. The Cubs were swept for the first time in 2025 and it was by the last place team in the National League Central, the Cincinnati Reds.

The games were close, 5-3, 6-5 and 5-3 but that doesn't matter, losses are losses and the the Cubs have piled them up thus far in August of 2025. The sweep was the Cubs first on the year and now, they have lost a season high six in a row.

The Cubs will now return to Chicago to face the Pirates (63-55/3rd NL Central/11.0 behind Cubs) as they look to turn around their fortunes in the month.

Re: MLB The Show 24 Franchise Mode Discussion Thread

Phillies took two of three from my Braves at Truist Park to pull to within 7.5 games of the NL East lead with about a week to go until the ASB. Was a little worried we were going to be swept, but we rallied for an 8-4 win in the finale.

The trade deadline is starting to heat up.

The Rangers, going for back-to-back WS titles, lead the AL West. They fortified their bullpen, bringing back Matt Moore. Jack Leiter is headed to the Angels in the trade.

The NL is top heavy with the Dodgers, Braves and Phillies. A bunch of teams just below .500 are in contention for a wild-card spot. Two of them made moves to strengthen their rosters: The Reds acquired 1B C.J. Cron from the Red Sox and the Padres got OF Jake Marisnick from the Angels.

We made a minor move, getting RP Diego Castillo from the Rangers for a fringe prospect. He wasn't on the Rangers' 40-man roster, so they put him on the block looking to dump a little bit of salary. They're nearly out of budget room after acquiring Moore.

A bit of nostalgia for me. Castillo was a major deadline acquisition in my MLB 21 dynasty. He's nowhere near the player he was then, but he gives us some depth in case Jesse Chavez falls off a cliff in the second half. Since he's not on the 40-man, we sent Castillo to Gwinnett.

Re: MLB The Show 24 Franchise Mode Discussion Thread

                  1991 season (season 2 using 1990 rosters)

Reached the all-star break with the Cubs 5 1/2 games back trailing NY, StL, and Philly. Its been a rough 1st half for both offenses and defense although SP Greg Maddux has been a major bright spot with an 11 and 3 record and earned a spot on the all star team and has been amongst the leaders for the NL Cy Young award. SS Shawon Dunston won the player of the month in April but has since come back down to earth while being named as a reserve on the NL All-star team. Reigning 1990 MVP Ryne Sandberg was also named to the all-star team as a reserve, but numbers are way down from 1990. The Cubs finished the first half of the season winning 5 of 6, sweeping the Texas Rangers and taking g 2 of 3 from the NL Central 2nd place Atlanta Braves who are in a tight battle with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Braves, who picked up third baseman Terry Pendleton in free agency before the season, are trying to match their real-life 1991 version by going from worst to first.

The Los Angeles Dodgers who picked up former Mets right fielder, leading MVP candidate Darryl Strawberry are the hottest team, having won 12 straight to end the first half. They are getting another season of strong pitching from Ramon Martinez, Tim Belcher, and veteran Orel Hershiser, who have all won 11 plus games.

The Mets, while losing one of their top players, are leading the NL East in a tight division at the break. They are being challenged closely by St. Louis and Philadelphia. NY replaced Strawberry with the speedy Vince Coleman and are getting another great season of pitching from 1990 Cy Young award winner Dwight Gooden. St. Louis is getting great production from Catcher turned third Baseman Todd Ziele and young outfielder Bernard Gilkey.

The Pittsburgh Pirates, as mentioned before, are in a tight battle with Atlanta for the NL Central and are being led by MVP candidate Barry Bonds, who is amongst the league leaders in every offensive category.

Over in the American League, the Toronto Blue Jays, who traded for OF's Joe Carter and Devon White and 2nd baseman Roberto Alomar in the off-season, are taken turns leading the division with rival Boston. The Red Sox are getting another Cy Young type season from all World Ace Roger Clemens. They've recently called up top prospect first baseman Mo Vaughn to go with their already potent offense.

As well as the Braves, the Minnesota Twins are also trying to turn around their 1990 last place finish after picking up SP Jack Morris. They are being challenged closely in the AL Central by Bret Saberhagen and the Kansas City Royals. A bright spot in the lineup has been CF Brian McCrae, who has taken over the OF spot after Superstar athlete Bo Jackson was released in the off-season.

Finally, in the AL West, it's a close battle between the defending AL Champion Oakland A's and the young upstart Seattle Mariners, who are challenging despite a down season from their young CF Ken Griffey Jr.

It looks like it's going to be a competitive second half in all the division races.

I've gone back to full 30 team control for this second season, as part of the fun for me is updating the rosters. So, I have been using baseball reference to make the major moves that occurred during the real-life season. I'm creating players that weren't included on the original 1990 set.

Cubs try to right ship in sweep of Pirates

The Pirates are much improved and currently (even after the sweep) hold the third wildcard spot in the NL. The Cubs task was to get things back on track in Chicago after the went 2-8 to start the month of August.

The Cubs were able to complete their task as they swept the Pirates but it was far from easy. Each game was decided by a single run (4-3,4-3 and 5-4) and the first two games were won in walkoff fasion in extras.

Oddly enough, both Shota Imanaga and Justin Steele were fantastic in the first two games but neither got the win. Jameson Taillon was good in game three but not as good as his aforementioned partners but still, he was the only starter to get a win in the series.

Imanga started off really strong as he struck out 7 of his first 9 batters faced. That pace could have led to a historic day but he cooled off and eventually struck out 11 in 8 innings of work, however, that eighth inning proved to be his downfall as he allowed two runs that at the time gave the Pirates the 2-1 victory.

The Cubs tied it in the ninth and eventually won it on a walkoff Dansby Swanson sac fly in the bottom of the 11th.

Game two was very similar as the Cubs again had a strong starting performance but still had to walk it off in exttas. That win came when Christopher Morel singled home the winning run in the 10th.

The Cubs then went on to win game three, 5-4 despite a late push that included a two run homerun by Zach Mckinstry in the 8th inning that brough the score to the all too familar one run difference at 5-4. Tanner scott was able to pitch a perfect 9th to record his 28th save of the season.

The Cubs will now have their first off day of August before they welcome Detroit (55-67/3rd Al C) to town.

                      From Bad to Worse
The Los Angeles Angels came into May hoping to right the ship. Instead they were swept by Philly, Cleveland and Pittsburgh to start the month. They gave up a no hitter in the 5th against Cleveland (15-17) when Jhokemsy Noel hit his 1st HR of his career off of Tyler Anderson. They also saw 2 HR (9) in The Pittsburgh (17-18) series by short stop O'Neil Cruz, extending the losing streak to 9. Mike Trout has done all he can to help stop the bleeding, including a 2 HR game at home against Kansas City (15-23). The bats actually woke up as they scored 4, which is the highest total they had in the entire losing streak. Unfortunately they gave up 11 as Vinnie Pasquatino matched Trout homerun for homerun but the difference was Trout's were all solo shots while Pasquatch gained 4 RBI in total.
The season is falling apart quickly as LA sits at (24-33) going into June.

                      W: 4 straight, no sweeps.

Cubs continue upward August trend with 2-1 series victoru over Detroit

The Chicago Cubs looked to maintain their NL Central and MLB as a whole dominace when they welcomed Detroit to town after a rough start to August. And as this month has gone, it wasnt easy.

Detroit won the first game of the series, ending Chicago's three game winning streak after their series sweep of Pittsburgh beforehand. In that first game, both teams got off to a hot start with Detroit scoring three in the first inning off of Jordan Wicks while Chicago tallied two against Beau Brieske. From there, both starters would settle in but Wicks would allow another run in the 7th inning. Before that, the Cubs got one off of Sawyer Gipson-Long when Josh Naylor hit his 19th HR of the season to at the time, tie it at 3-3.

As mentioned, Detroit took the lead in the seventh when Termarr Johnson knocked in Jake Rogers who had doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch before Johnson singled him home to help Detroit take the lead 4-3.

From there, Chicago was unable to get anything going against the Detroit bullpen as the Tigers took the 4-3 victory.

The Cubs bounced back however and went on to win games two and three to take the series.

The Cubs now hit the road and first they will travel to Tampa to take on the Rays (76-49/1st NL East/ 10.5 over Baltimore).

What's the longest CPU winning streak you've seen? The Phillies just won 20 straight in mine

I'm almost certainly getting 25, but I'm still grinding on 24. I'm determined to get at least one season in. I'm mad at myself now for not spending more time with 24 because of how good it is.

Anyway, made it to the ASB. We hit a bit of a rough patch, dropping two of three to the Giants and Phillies and three of four to the D-Backs before rebounding to take two of three from the Padres. At 67-29, we're six games up on Philadelphia in the East. The Dodgers, at 69-28, have the best record in MLB.

Spencer Strider is the NL Cy Young favorite but was left off the All-Star team. That seems like a pretty big snub. We did have five make it: Matt Olson, Ozzie Albies, Austin Riley, Ronald Acuna Jr. and Raisel Iglesias.

A couple of trades before the break. The Orioles acquired Luis Arraez from the Marlins, but it cost them Coby Mayo. The Padres got Jake Marisnick from the Angels.

We're still trying to dump David Fletcher's contract. He's making $6M this year and will make $7M next year. We've had discussions with both the Giants and Dodgers about him.

The Giants have a desperate need at SS. They want to send Luke Jackson back our way. Jackson is making $5.7M this season and next, so they'd only eat a little bit of extra money.

Seems strange that two top WS contenders would make a deal with each other, but the Dodgers could use a little middle IF depth. They want us to take back Blake Treinen. Treinen hasn't pitched in the majors in more than two years and has a 3.94 ERA (with 27 saves) at AAA, but we're intrigued by his stuff. He's making $8M this year but is on an expiring contract.

Cubs take series in possible World Series Preview (Yes, seriously!)

MLB power rankings have the Tampa Bay Rays as the #1 team in baseball while the Cubs are ranked #3. Both teams made significant moves to bring in big time talent over the past year + and it has shown. The Rays were some how able to get Kansas City to hand over one of the games brightest young stars in Bobby Witt JR. They also got catcher Freddy Fermin from KC in the same trade that sent high level prospects and Taj Bradley to the Royals. They also have acquired Orlando Arcia, Andres Munoz and Alex Lange via trades with their respective teams.

Mean while, the Cubs added Juan Soto and Tanner Scott via free agency and traded for Josh and Bo Naylor from Cleveland during the 2024 season.

Both teams also lead their respective divisions by 10+ games.

In their one series of this regular season, the Cubs got the better of the Rays as they won two out of the three games.

Their lone loss came in the first game and was lost despite having a 6-3 lead after six innings. Justin Steele was left in entirely too long and was allowed to pitch the complete game (8 innings) despite giving up 18 hits and 9 runs. Four of the Rays six runs after the 6th inning came in the seventh. Those four came from solo homeruns in back to back fasion by Randy Arozarena (20) and Orlando Garica (17). After that, Kevin Kiermier knocked in two after Jose Cabalerro and Taylor Walls got on before him.

Alex Lange got the save for Tampa which was his 27th on the year.

After game one however, the Cubs took control and mostly dominated the other two games as they won 9-5 and 7-2. They had a 7-1 lead after five innings in game two and were able to hold off Tampa's push for another come from behind victory. A cool note was Josh and Bo Naylor both homered in the third inning which marked their second time in their careers to homer in the same inning (2023 with Cleveland). Dansby Swanson also added five RBI's which gave him 11 in between this game and the last game in the Cubs last series versus Detroit .

Game three was won by Jordan Wicks as he allowed just 1 run in one inning of work. That run looked pretty good however as the Rays kept the Cubs off the board until the firth when Bo Naylor homered yet again (29!!). After that, the Cubs scored two runs in three consecutive innings (7.8.9) to take the victory, 7-2.

The Cubs will now head to Milwaukee for four as the Brewers (68-58/2nd NL Central) try to maintain their spot in the Wildcard race as they are currently second behind Philadelphia.
