Blue Jays lose their first series of the season

The Toronto Blue Jays (9-4) winning streak ended at 6 after dropping the last 2 games of a 3 games series against the Mariners for their first series at home this season.

The Blue Jays picked off right where they left off after the series in the Bronx. The offense was red hot and the pitching shutdowned the Mariners offense, powering Toronto to a blowout win in their home opener : 15-0. Kevin Gausman earned his 3rd win in 3 starts.

But things quiclky turned around in the second game. José Berrios (6.0 IP, 3 ER, 1 BB, 10 SO) tried his best to keep Toronto close to Seattle but the offense was cold all night as they recorded only 4 hits and dropped the game 5-3.

On Wednesday, the pitching staff struggled : Chris Bassitt allowed 4 runs in 3.2 innings of work while Mitch White and Jordan Romano combined to give up 4 more runs. Despite that, the Blue Jays came close to win but fell short in the 9th inning as Seattle won the game by 1 run, 8-7.

The Blue Jays, who lead the AL East by 1.5 games over Boston, will have a day off before a 3 games series against the Rockies (5-8) at home.

    Around the league
    • Cavan Biggio has been put in the 10-Days IL with a broken leg. He's expected to miss 1-2 months. The Blue Jay have called up Joey Votto. The 40 year started the season in Triple A.

Atlanta Gets Right Against Rival Mets

      July 26-28, 2024

Coming off of being swept for the first time all season, the Atlanta Braves wanted to get things back going and were able to do so in a road series with the New York Mets. They didn't start off right in game one however, as Chris Sale really struggled against the New York lineup. The lefty threw 3.1 innings and gave up five runs, while Pierce Johnson gave up two and Dylan Lee gave up one. Ozzie Albies produced a homer and three RBI, while Adam Duvall also went deep, as the Braves scored five runs from the seventh inning on, but it wasn't enough.

The Braves found themselves in dire straits again in game two, as they found themselves down 3-2 in the top of the eighth, but Ronald Acuna decided enough was enough as he drilled a two-run shot to take a 4-3 lead. A few pitches later, Matt Olson would also deposit one in the bleachers before Raisel Iglesias closed it down in a 5-3 win to end the Braves losing streak. Charlie Morton went 5.2 innings with two allowed, while the bullpen largely held it down the rest of the way.

The third saw another comeback victory for the Braves, as Bryce Elder gave up three runs in the fifth inning and four total through five, leaving the Braves down 4-2 in the top of the seventh. Austin Riley would hit a two-run shot to tie the game, while Travis d'Arnaud got an RBI single in the eighth to set up Iglesias for another save in a 5-4 win.

The last game of the series didn't show a lot of offense, as a Riley homer in the first inning and a two-run shot from Ozuna in the seventh provided all the scored, as while David Peterson was solid, Spencer Strider was sensational. Strider took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, completing 6.1 before being pulled, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out seven and keeping the Mets off the scoreboard. Iglesias would pick up his third straight save, completing a series win for Atlanta.

Atlanta is now at 76-30 and hopefully over their mini slump after the break. Up next is a three game set with the 47-59 Milwaukee Brewers to close out the month of July. The Braves are looking to potentially move for a reliever.

        ALCS Results against Tampa Bay

        Game 1: Tampa Bay 3, Toronto 0
The Jays got solid pitching from Gausman in the opener, but couldn't get any offense going and dropped game 1 by a score of 3-0.

        Game 2: Toronto 11, Tampa Bay 0
This time, it was Tampa's turn to get shut out and Toronto's offense provided Chris Bassitt with plenty of offensive support to even up the series.

        Game 3: Toronto 4, Tampa Bay 3
Both offenses came out swinging to start the game, but then cooled off over the final eight innings, and when all was said and done, Toronto had a one run victory. Nate Pearson, who had been added to the roster due to an injury to Trevor Richards in the previous game, allowed only one hit in two and a third innings of relief to grab the win.

        Game 4: Toronto 8, Tampa Bay 4
The bright lights of the postseason didn't have an effect on Paul Skenes at all as he fell one out short of a complete game. He did, however, strike out 13 Rays hitters and allowed just two runs on two hits.

        Game 5: Tampa Bay 7, Toronto 2
This was was close going into the bottom of the seventh before Tampa busted the game open with a four run seventh, including a three run shot by Issac Paredes.

        Game 6: Toronto 6, Tampa Bay 2

Kevin Gausman pitched his best game of the postseason by far, allowing just one run on two hits over seven innings. Yimi Garcia ran into some trouble in the eighth and was relieved with two outs and two on. Jordan Romano retired the last four Tampa hitters to pick up his fifth save of the playoffs.

So, Toronto wins the ALCS in six and will face the Dodgers in the World Series. LA has had quite the postseason so far, needing all five games to get past Philadelphia and all seven to get by Atlanta.

          2024 IBL ALL-STAR GAME

          <img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53632713757_5002acc2ec_o.jpg" width="720" height="405" alt="AllStar_24"/>
Fresno's Percy Sievers was the MVP with a triple, a home run, and this diving grab in center.

Arlington, TX (AP) – The 2024 IBL All-Star Game was a good one with the Desert League winning 3-1 at Globe Life Park in Arlington. Percy Sievers of Fresno was the MVP with a triple, home run and amazing diving catch in centerfield as he led the Desert League to the victory, their third straight All-Star Game win.

Sievers got things going for the Desert League with a solo home run to left to lead off the bottom of the third inning off of El Paso's Bruno de la Cruz.

The Mountain League would tie it up in the top of the sixth as El Paso's Shuheii Takahashi lined a two-out RBI single to left, scoring Blake Pacinelli to tie the game at 1-1. Roswell's Pacinelli had doubled to lead off the sixth.

The Desert League would regain the lead in the bottom half of the sixth against San Antonio's Ted McClendon. Mark Griffin singled to right and John Nichols doubled to right, his second double of the game. Lee Lim would hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Griffin and Frank Green followed with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Nichols.

The Mountain League could not push across another run and the Desert League held on for their third straight All-Star Game win.

Humberto Perez of Surprise was credited with the win, pitching one inning and allowing two hits and one run. Ted McClendon was given the loss, pitching the sixth and allowing two run son two hits. Fred Michael of Goodyear got the save and he worked a 1-2-3 ninth.

Rollie Flingers of Rio Rancho got the start for the Mountain League, pitching two innings and allowing one hit. He struck out two and walked one. Alex Farmer of Flagstaff pitched the fourth inning and did not allow a baserunner. He had one strikeout.

The second half of the 2024 season kicks off on Thursday evening with a stand alone game featuring Colorado Springs at Prescott. The trade deadline is just two weeks away. It will be exciting to see what the contenders do as the deadline draws near.

Trades: Amarillo has sent 33-year-old LF Bobby Huff (75 OVR, C POT) to El Paso in exchange for 25-year-old starting pitcher Justin O'Neill (70 OVR, C POT). Huff will likely be an extra bat for El Paso down the stretch while O'Neil, a minor leaguer, could potentially be an arm down the road for Amarillo as they look towards the future.

Cubs Spoil Rangers Party With Sweep
Game 1: 4-2 Dansby goes deep
Game 2: 5-2 Suzuki 2 homeruns to win it
Game 3: 11-1 Morel hits for the cycle

Justin Steele opened the season for Chicago against Nathan Eovaldi and The World Series Champion Texas Rangers. Jitters were obvious when Nico Hoerner flung his bat into the dugout on his 1st swing of the new season. The Rangers also showed they came to play with 11 hits. The 1st being by Evan Carter who saw 1 pitch and singled to right. Then on the next pitch stole 2nd. Justin Steele showed he was frazzled as he took a pitch clock violation against Wyatt Langford who smashed a screamer right at Dansby Swanson who caught it, right place, right time to catch and step on 2nd all in one motion to get the self made double play and rescue Steele, who struck out Semien to get out of the inning the next at bat.
The Cubs were extremely patient as they took the lead without a hit walking the bases loaded and scoring on a fielders choice RBI for Nick Madrigal. Bellinger helped add to the lead in the 3rd with a sac fly to move Michael Busch to 3rd and Morel hit a single to score him the next at bat.
Texas wouldn't go quietly however as Seager and Adolis hit back to back doubles in a 2 out rally along with an RBI single by Josh Jung to tie it. Wyatt Langford got his 1st hit. A single in the 5th but Texas couldn't score him.
Chicago was able to take the lead back and seal it with a homerun by Swanson (1) to take the lead in the 8th and Michael Busch sealed it in the top of the 9th with a solo shot to right (1). Alzolay closed it out with 1 hit and 3 strikeouts to take the save and a Cubs win 4-2.

Imanaga Shines in Debut, Cubs Take 2 of 3

Game 1: W 1-0 Imanaga shuts out Rockies
Game 2: L 3-2 Elias Diaz 3 run HR in 9th to win
Game 3: W 4-3 Ian Happ walkoff 2 run HR

Shota Imanaga saw 6 batters in the 1st, walking 1 and striking out 3 with bases loaded. Chicago scored 1 lone run and it came in the 1st off a Nick Madrigal RBI single to score Cody Bellinger from second. Colorado brought Yanquiel Fernandez to Wrigleyfield for his major league debut. He went 0/3 with 1 strikeout. Austin Gomber pitched relatively well and only allowed the 1 run. The Rockies just couldn't get anything going on offense. Imanaga went 6.2 innings of 4 hit no run ball on 84 pitches before Hector Nerris saw his 1st relief of the early season. Alzolay finished the game off with a 12 pitch, 2 strikeout, 1 hit save.
Chicago (5-1) now heads to Los Angeles for a date with the injury plagued rotation of The Dodgers (4-5) who just got word Glasnow will miss at least a month with a shoulder injury.

Braves Make a Move for October With Old Trade Partner

                    July 29, 2024

The Braves are all in. The best record in baseball at the time of the trade, they decided to make a move to help bolster their odds even more. Atlanta is acquiring Chris Martin, the best reliever on the trade market, from the Boston Red Sox. Boston will be acquiring relief pitcher Pierce Johnson and 21-year-old pitching prospect Cade Kuehler.

For the Braves, the 37-year-old Martin has been as good as any reliever in baseball the past two years and currently has an ERA of 1.76 in 30.2 IP. He's remarkably efficient, having only walked 17 batters since the beginning of 2023 in over 80 innings. He had 27 saves working for the last place Red Sox, and will move into a setup role in the short term for Atlanta. Martin is a rental as he will be a free agent this offseason, but it is a rental that gives Atlanta the best bullpen in all of baseball.

For the Red Sox, Johnson is younger at 33 and has been solid this year, even as the weak link on Atlanta's staff. He has a 4.47 ERA in 52.1 IP this year and gives Boston an extra year of control as his deal runs through the 2025 season. Kuehler, who was Atlanta's sixth pitching prospect, is viewed by scouts as a potential back end of the rotation piece but is still a few years away. He is now viewed as Boston's fifth best prospect in a farm system that was really light on pitching.

The Braves view the situation as worth it. This is a bit of a win-now window before some attrition possibly hitting their starting rotation this off-season with possible departures of Max Fried and Charlie Morton. Martin is a major improvement on what they have gotten out of Johnson and is a key piece as they move closer to the playoffs. Atlanta feels comfortable with where their other top pitching prospects are and viewed Kuehler as more of a future spot starter/long reliever if everybody reaches their potential.

This trade was made with one thing in mind: a World Series Title. The Braves feel like they put themsleves just a little bit closer.

Jackson Wolf, who was a late addition trade made the Opening day roster. He beat out Matt Waldron, Jhony Brito, and Randy Vasquez. The advantage Jackson Wolf had over the others was his left handed throwing ability. Without Wolf, the entire rotation would have been right handed.

Atlanta Finishes Off July With Series Win Over Brewers

                            July 29-31, 2024

In the previous home for the franchise, the Atlanta Braves went to Milwaukee and took two of three games against the Brewers. The opener was a mixture of a strong all around offensive day and a really good pitching performance. On offense, the Braves totaled 14 hits with five people knocking in at least one run. Ronald Acuna and Austin Riley each had three hits, with Riley also knocking in a run. Matt Olson, Marcell Ozuna, and Orlando Arcia each knocked in two, with Jarred Kelenic knocking one in as well. Max Fried threw five innings, only giving up one but struggling with his command by walking four batters, but did strike out eight. Joe Jimenez and Reynaldo Lopez held the Brewers scoreless in the 8-1 win.

The Brewers bounced back with a nice 5-2 win in the second game. Chris Sale was far from bad, giving up three in 6.1 innings, with Dylan Lee and Lopez each giving up runs as well. The problem was an offense that got a single extra base hit, from Olson, with Olson and Ozuna knocking in the runs. The Brewers got homers from Willy Adames and Garrett Mitchell.

In the final game of the series and July, the Braves got an impressive 6-4 win. This came despite Charlie Morton giving up three runs in the third inning, as the Braves just kept chipping away. This first big hit was a Michael Harris two-run homer in the fifth, while Olson's three-run homer in the seventh was the eventual winner. Acuna did hit a homer in the ninth to extend the lead. This was the first appearance from new Brave Chris Martin, who recorded four outs and only allowed a single baserunner in a nice debut. Raisel Iglesias gave up a homer to Jake Bauers, but did get his 34th save in the win.

The Braves are at 78-31, hanging on to the best record in baseball. Up next is a four-game set at home against the Miami Marlins, who are fourth in the NL East with a 41-67 record.

                              World Series vs Dodgers:

                              Game 1: Toronto 4, Los Angeles 3 (12 innings)
An exciting game one came to a dramatic end in the 12th as Danny Jansen crushed a 474 foot bomb out of Dodger Stadium to secure the win.

                              Game 2: Toronto 9, Los Angeles 3
Daulton Varsho had a pair of homers and Chris Bassitt was rock solid on the mound again to help give Toronto a 2-0 series lead.

                              Game 3: Toronto 9, Los Angeles 4
Toronto's offensive onslaught continued in this one, but the Dodgers know how to hit homers too, getting two solos each from Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani. When all was said and done, however, Toronto found themselves up 3-0 and one win away from the title.

                              Game 4: Los Angeles 1, Toronto 0
Unfortunately, Bobby Miller decided he wasn't going to allow his team to be swept and pitched shut out ball into the 9th. The only offense came off a solo homer by Mookie Betts off Jose Berrios in the top of the 7th. Although Berrios hasn't had the best of seasons this year, he did pitch well in this game.

                              Game 5: Toronto 5, Los Angeles 3
And the title heads back to Canada for the first time since 1993. With James Outman on base and two outs, Freddie Freeman banged one off the wall and Outman tried to score from first, but was thrown out at the plate to end the game and the series. Willy Adames was named World Series MVP and Vlad Jr was named playoff MVP

                                Atlanta Braves July 2024 Recap

                                Monthly Record:
                                18-8
                                Season Record: 78-31
                                NL East Standings: Braves 78-31, Phillies 50-58 (27.5), Mets 50-60 (28.5), Marlins 41-67 (36.5), Nationals 40-69 (38)
Offensive Player of the Month: Ronald Acuna - After a bit of a slow start from a power perspective, a 10 homer, six SB 25 RBI, and 16 run month have not only pushed Acuna to the top of the NL (and third in baseball) in WAR, it has put him in a spot to potentially have a second straight year making the first person to ever do something: after becoming the first 40/70 guy ever, he now has a chance at back-to-back 40/40 seasons. Acuna now stands with an OPS of .968 with 26 homers and 37 steals with 53 games to go.
Pitcher of the Month: Spencer Strider - Strider just kept the good times rolling. He has kept his ERA at a MLB leading level essentially from day one, while also being the best strikeout pitcher in baseball. He was th best pitcher yet again this month for the Braves, going 2-1 with an ERA just north of 1.70 with40 strikeouts in 32 innings.
Player That Disappointed: Sean Murphy - It is a lost year for the catcher, as Murphy has seen his average drop another 15 points and his OPS over 50 since the beginning of July. He struggled in the second half of 2023 and hasn’t really ever gotten it going. Travis d’Arnaud has also struggled the past few months, making the catcher position the weakest in the potent lineup

Thoughts for July: Back-to-back series losses after the Break sort of mask how good of a month it was yet again for Atlanta. Outside of losing five of six games in that stretch, the Braves went 18-4, again outstanding. The move for Martin near the deadline could have been the final piece. If Murphy gets going, the team appears unstoppable.
