Yanks Avoid Sweep Take Down O's 3-1

    Date:June 20th, 2024
    Orioles Record:43-32 (2nd AL East, 3 GB)
    Last 10:5-5

Gerrit Cole was too much for the visiting Orioles as he allowed just 3 hits and 1 run over 8 innings of work. Cole walked 1 and struck out 3. The win kept the Yankees from being swept by the Orioles and within striking distance of the AL East division lead. The Orioles lone run came on a Cedric Mullins home run.

The Orioles will now head off to the Lone Star state to take on the Houston Astros for a weekend 3 game set. The Astros lead the AL West with a 47-28 record, but will be without starting second baseman Jose Altuve for 2 months as he suffered a broken wrist this week.

    Orioles Notes:
    • The Orioles activated rookie IF Jackson Holliday, who had been on the IL with back stiffness. In 48 games Holliday was hitting .277 with 7 home runs and 28 RBI.
    • Gunnar Henderson ranks 7th in the league in BA. Henderson is hitting .323 while also hitting 14 homers and knocking in 48 runs.
    • Anthony Santander leads the AL in RBI with 63
    • RHP Kyle Bradish is putting toghether an All Star Caliber season. Bradish is 9-2 while posting a 3.32 ERA.
    • The Orioles signed veteran 1B/DH Yuli Gurriel to a minor league contract and assigned him to AAA Norfolk.

    League Notes:
    • The Giants have traded once touted C prospect Joey Bart to the Braves for OF Justin Dean
    • The Braves placed C Travis d'Arnaud on the 10 Day IL with a broken hand.
    • The Rangers OF Evan Carter is the early favorite for the AL Rookie of the year. Carter's slashline .286/.376/.472 is opening eyes around the league. The young outfielder also has 8 homers and 8 stolen bases to his credit.
    • The Dodgers are starting to run away with the NL West. The Dodgers have won 8 of their last 10 including 7 in a row to take a 9 game lead over the 2nd place Diamondbacks. Their current record is 53-24 and they are 22-5 in games against their division opponents.

      2024 Oakland Athletics 05/03-05/05

      Overall Record:14-21 (5th AL West/7.0 behind Texas)

      Game Results

      Game 1
      Athletics-3
      Marlins-1

      Game 2
      Marlins-9
      Athletics-6

      Game 3
      Marlins-7
      Athletics-0

Athletics fail to get closer to .500 goal

The Oakland Athletics won just one game in their three game series against Miami who was without their star player Jazz Chisholm who is out stil for another 2-3 weeks with a torn ligament in his finger.

The A's one win game in game one via a walkoff in the 10th inning as Zach Gelof hit his sixth homerun of the season to give the A's the 3-1 victory.

Game 2 started off hot and heavy as the Marlins scored four in the first inning off of Ross Stripling. Surprisingly enough, the Athletics matched that in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a pair of two run homers by Brent Rooker and Tyler Soderstrom.

Unfortunately, the Marlins stayed hot while the Athletics cooled off as Miami took the 9-6 vicotry.

Game three was all Miami and Eury Perez who dominated Athletics' hitters enroute to the 7-0 victory.

The A's will now finish off their homestand against the Texas Rangers (21-14/1st AL West), a team that they suprisingly won a series against in April.

Atlanta Braves Franchise: 2024 All Star Break

***Note: I don’t know if the game takes into account that he just pitched in the final game or not, but Spencer Strider is not shown as selected for the ASG despite leading the NL SP in voting by a mile. Of course we are well represented, just something to point out.***

The American League Defeats the National League 9-4

          Standings At the Break

          NL East: Braves 72-24, Phillies 47-49 (25 GB), Mets 43-54 (29.5), Marlins 37-59 (35), Nationals 36-61 (36.5)
          NL Central: Cubs 53-45, Cardinals 52-45 (0.5), Reds 49-49 (4), Brewers 42-56 (11), Pirates 40-56 (12)
          NL West: Dodgers 67-30, Diamondbacks 50-47 (17), Giants 46-51 (21), Padres 44-55 (24), Rockies 31-66 (36)
Current NL Wild Card: Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Reds

          AL East: Rays 56-40, Yankees 56-42 (1), Blue Jays 55-43 (2), Orioles 52-45 (4.5), Red Sox 44-52 (12)
          AL Central: Twins 62-35, Guardians 47-50 (15), Royals 42-56 (20.5), Tigers 40-57 (22), White Sox 39-59 (23.5)

Current AL Wild Card: Rangers, Yankees, Blue Jays

          Thoughts From Around the League
          • A Chance At History: It is unlikely, but it is worth noting that there are five people with at least 30 homers in Austin Riley (38), Matt Olson (34), Mike Trout (33), Vladimir Guerrero (31), and Shohei Ohtani (30), which with most teams having played in the 95-97 game range means they have shots at a 60 homer season.
          • The Most Surprising Team: Los Angeles Angels - After being perhaps the biggest losers of the offseason with the loss of Shohei Ohtani, Mike Trout, Reid Detmers, and Griffin Canning are doing their best by keeping them above .500. Trout remaining healthy is perhaps their biggest key, as he has been among the best players in baseball in the first half.
          • The Most Disappointing Team: San Diego Padres - Most of this season is largely going the ay experts predicted, but the Padres being 11 games under .500 when the team was still hunting for a playoff spot heading into this season.

Keep in mind you may have the top ASG vote getters at quite a few positions, but that does not guarantee they will all make it as there has to be at least 1 representative from every team.

I thought it might be that but wasn’t 100% sure, thank you for the clarification! Almost has to be what it was then. I knew some others would be kept off to make sure, didn’t know it would be the top vote getter though

Unlike the Royals save, the Jays were able to get past the Houston Astros in the American league Division Series.

                    Game 1: Toronto 7, Houston 5
Toronto got off to a hot start in the first inning of this game and never looked back, riding the offense to a game one win and giving starter Kevin Gausman plenty of support. Jordan Romano picked up his first save of the series.

                    Game 2: Houston 6, Toronto 4 (10 innings)
Extra inning games was something the Jays didn't do well in the regular season, and sure enough, that carried over into postseason play as Yordan Alvarez hit a three run shot off Trevor Richards in the 10th. George Springer did hit a solo homer leading off the bottom of the 10th, but Josh Hader came in after that and struck out three in a row to preserve the win for the Astros.

                    Game 3: Toronto 2, Houston 1
Very little offense in this one, but a sacrifice fly in the 5th would stand up as the winner in this one. Chris Bassitt went six solid innings for his first win of the postseason and Romano picked up his second save of the series.

                    Game 4: Toronto 5, Houston 4 (10 innings)
This one didn't look too good early on as Jose Berrios gave up a two run shot in the bottom of the first to put Toronto into an early hole. He would still manage to go five innings with only those two runs allowed. However, Erik Swanson gave up a two run shot to Alvarez in the bottom of the 7th to extend Houston's lead. Toronto headed into the 8th down by a score of 4-1, but Willy Adames came up clutch with a two run double to make it 4-3. A sac fly to score Vlad Jr would tie the game at 4 and send it to extras where Vlad Jr would deliver a clutch solo shot to put Toronto ahead for the first time in the game. Jordan Romano secured the save in the bottom of the 10th to send Toronto to the ALCS against the Tampa Bay Rays, who knocked out the 102 win Minnesota Twins in the other ALDS series. In the National League, Arizona got knocked out by Atlanta in four while the Phillies and Dodgers went the full five with LA prevailing.

ALCS roster changes: Joey Votto added to playoff roster, Jose Berrios removed from playoff roster.

Braves Come Out of the Break Cold, Avoid Sweep From Cardinals

                        July 19-21, 2024

When they entered the Break, the Atlanta Braves were rolling with a season-high 12 game win streak. Things immediately got off to a rocky start, as Nolan Arenado hit a three-run homer off of Max Fried in the first inning. The Braves would get off to a good start themselves though, with Michael Harris, Ronald Acuna, and Matt Olson all hitting solo shots in the first inning. Gibson and Fried would both settle down, though Fried did give up another run in the fourth and the Braves found themselves down 4-3 before Arenado again went deep against Tyler Matzek to give them a 5-2 lead. AJ Minter would give up a homer Nolan Gorman in a little lefty-on-lefty crime to make it 6-3 Cardinals. Marcell Ozuna would hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to make it 6-5, but Arendo would hit his third homer of the game in the top of the eighth, again distancing the Cards. Ryan Helsley would go for a save in the ninth, finally being chased out after walking in a better (one of three walks), before John King got a double play ball from Ozuna with the bases loaded to save an 8-6 win for the Cardinals. Fried, in a walk year, now has an ERA north of 4.00 and has been the worst starter in the rotation.

The second game saw the Cardinals pull away early, scoring six runs off of Chris Sale in just 3.1 innings thanks in large part to Masyn Winn's grandslam. Despite homers from Olson, Ozzie Albies, and Ozuna, the Braves were beaten 7-3.

The Braves would save themselves their first sweep of the season with an eighth inning comeback. Down 3-1, Acuna worked his way on base before being driven in by an Olson single. Albies then hit his 30th homer of the season, giving the Braves a late 4-3 lead. Raisel Iglesias would close the game for his 30th save, tying him for the NL lead. It was a really good outing from Charlie Morton, who gave one earned (two total thanks to a Sean Murphy error) in six innings, while the bullpen was good behind him with Tyler Matzek and Reynaldo Lopez dealing before Iglesias came in.

Atlanta now stands at 73-26 and are preparing to finish out the homestand against a Cincinatti Reds team that is 52-49 and has won 10 games in a row to get themselves in the thick of the NL Central and Wild Card race.

This seems right. Earlier in the season I was on a hot streak right up until the Cards swept me. I can't beat those guys.

I couldn’t throw a pitch past Arenado, 5 hits in total with those 3 bombs. Gorman’s homer was just an insane swing on a ball out of the zone

Braves Get Swept by Red Hot Cincinnati Team

                                July 22-24, 2024

The Braves stayed at home to take on a super hot Cincinnati Reds team, and the young team did not disappoint in this series.

The opener of this series was the game of the year, unless you were a pitcher. The Reds got off a good start off of Bryce Elder, as a Will Benson triple knocked in two runs before he was knocked in be Elly De La Cruz to score runs in the top of first inning. The Braves, like they did against the Cardinals in that opener, made their presence known, as Michael Harris, Ronald Acuna, and Austin Riley took three of the first five pitches from Nick Lodolo for homers. A Matt Olson double would lead to him getting knocked in by Sean Murphy for a 4-3 lead through one. In the third, a Riley error allowed an inning to continue that would lead to four Reds runs, most of the damage from a Jeimer Candaleraio three-run homer. Now down 7-4, Atlanta scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an Adam Duvall, Acuna (two runs), and Riley homers again. Candelario would strike again with a solo shot off of Aaron Bummer in the fifth to tie at 8-8 before De La Cruz added another run with an RBI single in the sixth. Down 9-8, Orlando Arcia hit mammoth two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to take a 10-9 lead. Jonathan India would tie the game with an RBI single to score Tyler Stephenson off of Tyler Matzek. The game would go into extra innings, where a TJ Friedl single with two outs would give the Reds a lead. The Braves offense died in the bottom of the 10th, as Arcia, Harris, and Acuna all went down as the Reds take a 11-10 win in the opener for their 11th straight win. The offense was phenomenal, but the pitching staff, which has struggled since the break, just had no answers in this one for the scorching hot Reds offense.

All of the offense from the opener went down the drain in the second game, as Spencer Strider and Andrew Abbott did their fellow pitchers a favor with dominant efforts. Unfortunately for the Braves, it was Abbott who came out on top, as the lefty threw a complete game shutout. Strider went seven innings, as the lone run of the game was a De La Cruz homer off of him in the sixth inning. The Braves post-Break struggles continue as the Reds get up to a 12-game win streak.

The sweep was complete with a 6-2 win for the Reds in the finale. Max Fried again struggled, giving up four runs in five innings. Reynaldo Lopez and Bummer gave up runs as well, Frankie Montas gave up two runs in seven innings for the Reds. Jarred Kelenic and Riley contributed the RBI as the offense struggled.

For the first time all year, the Braves are really struggling as they have lost five of their last six with all the games being at home. Still standing at an incredible 73-29, Atlanta now heads on the road to take on the New York Mets (48-55). Atlanta is barely hanging on to the top seed in the NL over the Dodgers (72-31).
