Acuna, Braves Dominate Short Series With Red Sox

    June 4-5, 2024

The Boston Red Sox have found themselves right in the middle pack of major league baseball, entering this series with a 28-32 record and badly needed some home cooking. They didn't get it, as the Braves jumped out early and often in a short two game series.

The opener was almost over from the word go, as the Braves jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning with RBI hits from Ronald Acuna and Austin Riley. Later, Matt Olson smacked two homers, including a grand slam, while Michael Harris and Ronald Acuna combined for seven hits in the rout. Bryce Elder continued his strong stretch by allowing two runs over 7.2 IP as he is settling in as the fifth starter. The Braves win the opener 8-2.

The second game saw Spencer Strider on the mound. Strider had his struggles in this one, as the leadoff hitter reached in four of the six innings he threw in, but he struck out six in 5.1 IP and didn't allow a run. Ronald Acuna smacked three doubles, grabbed a stolen base, and scored three times. Austin Riley produced four hits and knocked in all four of Atlanta's runs in a 4-0 win.

For the series, Acuna went 6-9 with four doubles and two stolen bases while knocking in a run and scoring three times. Olson's big first game was huge, as similar walk and strikeout rates, the slugger has struggled in the batting average department (.241). Still, he has mashed 17 homers and knocked in 53 runs in early June, positioning him for an All-Star big and perhaps a Silver Slugger.

The Braves are now at 44-17 and are up 12 games in the NL East over the Philadelphia Phillies. Up next is another four-game set in the nation's capital to play the Washington Nationals (23-38).

      Cardinals Drop Series to Phillies

The Cardinals (27-32) dropped 2 games of their 3 game series with the Phillies in Philadelphia over the weekend. The Cardinals are now back to 8 games behind the Brewers.

After winning in explosive fashion on Friday, 18-3, the Cardinals couldn't muster but just 3 runs combined the final two games of the series. They scored 1 on Satruday, losing 4-1, and then 2 on Sunday losing 7-2.

The Cardinals will now travel to Houston for a 3 game series with Astros as the month of June gets into full swing.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Braves Again With a Four Game Sweep of the Nationals

        June 6-9, 2024

The Atlanta Braves have gone through a stretch of playing bad teams and taking advantage of it. This fortunate scheduling continued with a clean sweep of the Washington Nationals.

Game one did provide some fireworks late, as the Braves got three hits from Ronald Acuna, homers from Matt Olson, Ozzie Albies, and Sean Murphy and still needed Raisel Iglesias to close it down in the ninth after Pierce Johnson gave up three runs without recording an out. Max Fried was just decent on the bump, giving up three runs over his five innings. The bullpen was largely good outside of Johnson, and the Braves picked up an 8-6 win.

Game two was all Atlanta, as the Braves picked up an insane seven homers and 21 hits. Acuna, Albies, and Marcell Ozuna each hit two of those homers, with Olson continuing his hot streak with another as well. Chris Sale produced a quality start and Johnson rebounded with three scoreless innings in a 13-3 win.

Game three was another exciting game, as the Braves jumped out to an lead with a two-run homer from Acuna in the first inning. A good start from Charlie Morton (5.1 IP, 2 ER), was squandered by Dylan Lee giving up three runs in the seventh inning as the Nationals tied the game at 5-5. Austin Riley hit his first homer of the road trip in the ninth to give the Braves the lead, and Iglesias came in and yet again got a save. Ozuna and Albies also hit homers in this game.

Bryce Elder has been fantastic of late, but saw his outing fall apart in the Sunday matchup. After giving up two runs in his first six innings on the mound, he gave up four runs before being taken out in the seventh inning without getting an out. Johnson and Joe Jimenez would also struggle as the Braves gave up eight runs on the mound. Thankfully for the staff, the Nationals again had no answers for the offense. Riley produced a triple, homer (his 30th), and three RBI, while Olson and Ozuna each found dingers as well. The offense totaled 18 hits and managed 10 runs before Iglesias closed out a 10-8 win.

As stated above, the Braves (48-17) have had a fortunate schedule, playing five straight series against teams with a losing record. That benefit is about go out the window though, as they will finish up this road trip with the Baltimore Orioles (39-26) before a homestand against the Tampa Bay Rays (38-27) and the Detroit Tigers (29-36). After that, a road trip against the New York Yankees (39-28) and St Louis Cardinals (36-30) will finish up a tough stretch for most of the rest of June.

Atlanta Wins Rubber Match to Take Series In Baltimore

          June 11-13, 2024

In a matchup of two of the best teams in baseball, the Atlanta Braves come out on top thanks to good pitching and timely hitting over the AL East leading Baltimore Orioles.

The first game of the series featured one of the top matchups of the season, as Spencer Strider faced off against Orioles' ace Corbin Burnes. Unfortunately for Burnes, this game went like a lot of Strider's starts this year: a lot of offense and dominant pitching. While Strider's stat line was solid in his last start, he worked his way out of trouble a ton. This was more like what he has been all year, with seven scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and only three hits allowed. The Atlanta offense mashed, hitting five homers, including two of the two-run variety from Austin Riley. Riley is now up to 32 homers and teams are still pitching to him thanks to this lineup. Braves win the opener 12-0.

The offense of game one went silent in game two, as a Matt Olson two-run homer was the only time the Braves reached the scoreboard as John Means put together a really strong performance with six innings and only two runs allowed. Max Fried put together a quality start, but the second Austin Hays homer of the game would chase him out. Baltimore wins 6-2.

After a fairly tough April, Chris Sale has been as good as can be expected, and that continued in the rubber match of the series as he goes 7.1 innings without allowing a run. The Braves got an RBI double from Michael Harris and Orlando Arcia got a SAC fly to score Sean Murphy, as Raisel Iglesias notched his 19th save of the season.

The Braves are now up to an absurd 50-18, overtaking the now 49-21 Los Angeles Dodgers, who have not lost four games in a row, for the best record in baseball. A tough series with Baltimore is followed by another one with the Tampa Bay Rays, who are now tied with Baltimore in the AL East with a record of 41-28 after a home sweep of the Chicago Cubs.

No, it doesn't get boring. Every game is different. All have a different feel. I've had a mix of games. Most games come down to one or 2 at bats that determine the outcome. There has been a lot of luck too.

Thank you! Though I admit I'm only playing a game per series, typically the first one and the occasional critical situation. I'm also on vacation with yard work done so having a lot more free time this week helps lol. I also decided to go into this year with default HOF and let it ride, no tinkering has helped me get more games in as well, though I am debating a jump to Legend (will no matter what for playoffs).

If I didn't return back to the Braves this year, I would have likely gone Tampa, Seattle, or Cincy. Tampa always seems fun, plenty of pitching with good position guys and prospects. Houston would be interesting to how a retool would go in a year or two with them as they are aging. They are mashing the ball in mt franchise, though the rotation outside of Brown has been a struggle it appears.

Atlanta Finds Rubber Match Magic in Series With Tampa Bay

                  June 14-16, 2024

Two of the best teams in baseball faced off and despite Tampa Bay's best efforts, Atlanta came out on top yet again. In a three-game set full of great pitching performances, the Braves capitalized more often.

The first game sure looked like it was going to an offensive onslaught, as the Braves jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning off of Jeffrey Springs while the Rays tied the game off of Charlie Morton in the top of the second. After that, both pitchers would settle in for excellent performances. Both allowed nine hits, but didn't produce any walks with Morton going seven and Springs six. The big blow of the game came in the bottom of the eighth with two outs, as Matt Olson caught a hanging change up from Jason Adam and deposited it in the Chophouse before Raisel Iglesias continued his incredible June rebound for yet another save.

The, relatively speaking, cold Brave bats were held to a shutout in game two. Shane McClanahan continued a strong 2024 campaign with an eight inning, 10 strikeout performance. A Jose Caballero homer along with a Richie Palacios RBI single were plenty in a 2-0 win for Tampa Bay.

The moment of the series happened in the rubber match, as Spencer Strider found himself in clear trouble in the sixth inning. After allowing the first two batters on, Strider struck out Yandy Diaz and Isaac Parades before forcing a ground out of Randy Arozarena. Homers from Orlando Arcia and Olson provided the run support needed for Strider, who finished with a complete game shutout, allowing only six baserunners while striking out eight. Strider is up to 10-2 on the season, with an ERA of 1.26 and 122 Ks in 100 IP. He is easily pacing baseball in those categories and has already produced a WAR of 4.1 before we have even hit July.

The Braves stand at 52-19 and have built a monster lead in the NL East, as the Philadelphia Phillies have fallen behind by 16 games as they have lost seven of their last 10 games. Up next for Atlanta is a three game series at home against a Detroit Tigers (32-39) that has been playing well before being swept by the Houston Astros.

I've been playing this game since 2014 and just came off the most epic world series run I've ever had. I chose the Rockies to try and get them their first ever world series. I play legend pitching/hitting. Custom game entry during the regular season. Play every playoff game

2024 season was a bit of a surprise for the young Rockies. They finished 83 and 79. They were in the wild card chase at the trade deadline forcing their hand to make a run which led them to acquiring Jose Ramirez from the rebuilding guardians who were looking to offload salary. They just ended up missing out on the third wild card spot during the year. They saw prospects like Nolan Jones, Ezekiel Tovar, and Chase Dollander take big jumps followed by the drafting of generational talent, 1B Rodney Swain (who models himself after Todd Helton) the off season was pretty quiet as a Rockies wanted to keep a lower payroll until they thought they were ready to take on the likes of the Dodgers and Astros.

2025 the Rockies finished 89 and 73 in a season that saw Rodney Swain win rookie of the year and the Rockies clinching the third and final wild card spot. They swept the cubs in the wildcard and followed that up by escaping the Phillies with a huge game 5 clinching win to put them into the NLCS. The Rockies were prepared to play the dodgers who had a commanding 3-0 serious lead against the Cardinals. The Cardinals in epic fashion won 4 in row upsetting the dodgers to meet the Rockies in the NLCS. That series for the Cardinals took a lot out of them and the Rockies were able to advance to the world series in five games where they would play the Houston Astros.

In the world series home field was a disadvantage as the Rockies had a 3-2 series lead heading back home to Coors Field. The home team in the series has yet to win a game.

Game six get started and you can feel the buzz in Coors Field. Nolan Jones was a late scratch as he pulled his hamstring in warm-ups .Anxiety may have got the best of the Rockies at the start of the game where they found themselves down 8-2 after a Yordan Alvarez Grand slam in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh with two runners on Ryan McMahon hit a moonshot bringing the Rockies to within three. The bottom of the eighth saw Rodney Swain inject some life into Coors as he hit a solo shot to bring the Rockies within two.

Now for the heroics down to their last strike with one on Jose Ramirez Rips the cover off the baseball and sent it into the crowd on a 3-2 count off of Ryan Presley tying the ball game and forcing extras. Extra innings both teams were cautious which saw a pretty anti-climatic innings 10/11. In the bottom of the 12th, Rodney Swain was able to hit a bloop single and would be removed for a pinch runner. Yanquiel Fernandez comes to the plate. The first pitch leads to a passed ball allowing the pinch runner to get on second. The next pitch Fernandez sees he rips single into right field behind a massive roar in Coors field Kyle Tucker fields the ball and throws home. The runner is safe. The Rockies come all the way back to win their first ever world series!

My palms are still sweating lol. I love this game and baseball!

Yeah, I'm having a variety of games, but largely winning. Which, I guess I should be as the Braves with such a good squad. I think I'll just keep it moving with HOF on both for now, maybe move up to Legend for the added difficulty come playoff time.

Braves Erupt in Game One, Win Series With Detroit

                          June 17-19, 2024

The Braves scored five runs total in their series with the Tampa Bay Rays, and they eclipsed that total in the first two innings against the Tigers' Reese Olson. Olson was struggling some into this start and didn't last long here and then the Detroit bullpen also got mashed. The Braves offense amassed 22 hits, hit four homers, and scored 18 runs. Michael Harris hit one of those shots and added two doubles to knock in six runs. June continues to be the month of Matt Olson, who hit another two homers in this game for five RBIs. Max Fried gave up hits to the first two batters, then only gave up two more over 6.2 IP of scoreless ball. Fried struck out eight, making this one of his best starts of the season. The Braves finished with an 18-1 victory.

The second game was considerably more mild, as Matt Manning of Detroit and Chris Sale of the Braves combined for 16 scoreless innings as the game went into extra innings. Detroit would score in the top of the 10th off of an RBI single from Jake Rogers, but it wasn't enough, as Atlanta got RBI hits from Adam Duvall and a walk off single from Harris to take a 2-1 win.

In the final game, Detroit threw Jack Flaherty, who had an ERA close to 8.00 and was not facing the best offense in baseball. The vet was unfazed and pitched easily his best game of the year, throwing eight scoreless innings as his offense crushed Charlie Morton (four IP, four runs allowed) and Pierce Johnson (0.2 IP, four earned runs) as Detroit got in the victory column with an emphatic 9-0 win.

The Braves will head on their next road trip with a record of 54-20 and cruising in the NL East. Up next is a three-game set against the New York Yankees, who are currently at 44-33. While they can't quite match the Atlanta offense, the Yankees are getting a ton of production from their stats, as Aaron Judge has hit 19 homers while slashing .304/.404/.607 and Juan Soto has 17 homers with a slash of .272/.388/.508 in his walk year. Giancarlo Stanton has hit 18 homers, while Gleyber Torres is enjoying a breakout season with a .317/.382/.563 slash and 18 homers of his own. Atlanta will miss Gerritt Cole in the rotation, but Marcus Stroman, Carlos Rodon, and Clarke Schmidt could provide trouble.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have been a pretty big surprise in the first month of the 2024 regular season as they now sit at 21-11. What is even a bigger surprise is that they sit in second in the NL Central behind the Cincinnati Reds who have the best record in the majors (24-8).

The Athletics offense struggled in the series versus the Pirates as they finished with just twelve hits for the entire series. Funnily enough, they least amount of hits came in their game two win (3) and they also scored their most runs of the series (5).

How did that happen? Well, the Pirates got out to the early lead, 2-0 after four innings. Two of the Athletics hits came in the fifth when Seth Brown got on base with a single and Miguel Andujar later knocked him in with a double to bring the score to 2-1. The Pirates then went on to increase their lead in the seventh as they scored two more runs off of four its in the inning. That Brought an end to Paul Blackburn's day that was rather uninspiring (6.2 IP 12 H 4 R 4 SO). Trevor Gott then came in and finished off the inning.

The Eighth inning is where Oakland somehow made their comeback. The Pirates brought in Dauri Moreta (27 YR OLD RHP 73 OVR). He then proceeded to walk the first batter he faced, Miguel Andujar. Jordan Diaz then hit a grounder to short and Andujar was able to beat the throw to second and Diaz was safe at first. That was ruled a fielders choice. Aledmys Diaz was then walked to load the bases. Then, with the bases loaded, Esteury Ruiz knocked in two with a double.

After that, it looked like the Athletics might squander their chance to at least tie the game. Aroldis Chapman was brought into the game and made quick work of Matt Chapman and Abraham Toro, striking out both of them. After that, the Pirates made the decision to intentionally walk Brent Rooker to load the bases. That was followed by a great at bat by Seth Brown that ended in a walk to bring in the tying run to make the score 4-4.

The game eventually went into extra innings where the A's walked it off on a Nick Allen sacrifice fly.

Overall, the month of April ended up the way or maybe a little better than what most thought the A's could do. They will look to improve on that in the month of May and hopefully, at least get back to .500.

Their first test comes as they welcome the Marlins (12-21/5th NL East) to town.

Matt Chapman went 1-8 in two games in his return to Oakland.

                              2024 Colorado Rockies Franchise

We have arrived at the end of April. We started off the season on a hot streak, getting ourselves up to a 13-8 record, which got us into first place early, but then we started going down hill quickly. Here are the current standings:

                              NL West Standings
                              1) Dodgers - 20-12 - 0 GB
                              2) Padres - 18-15 - 2.5 GB
                              3) Rockies - 14-15 - 4.5 GB
                              4) Giants - 14-16 - 5.0 GB
                              5) D-Backs - 13-18 - 6.5 GB

During the month, I got a trade offer from the Dodgers that I decided I couldn't pass up. This trade ended up being:

My Rockies Get: SP Bobby Miller (82 OVR, A potential) and RF Josue De Paula (69 OVR, A potential)
Dodgers Get: RF Nolan Jones (88 OVR, A potential)

Nolan Jones was off to a decent start (batting around .250 with 1 HR and 5 RBIs) but the chance to get two A potential guys and add another great young piece to our farm system was too enticing. So Bobby Miller jumps into our rotation and Josue De Paula will start off in AAA for the time being. To help compensate for this move, we brought LF Sean Bouchard up to our MLB roster and sent SP Ryan Feltner down

Here are our current player stats for the season:

Ryan McMahon has obviously gotten off to a killer start. 10 home runs puts him in a tie for the NL lead (Mike Trout leads overall with 14 HRs). Brenton Doyle is currently 2nd in the NL with 10 Steals (Corbin Carroll leads overall with 14 SBs). In the words of Oakland's manager, Mark Kotsay (when talking about why they sent down Esteury Ruiz), "In order for stolen bases to be a factor, we have to get him on base." Doyle obviously sets a lot of stolen bases, but he doesn't get on base enough to make it a true danger for the opposing team.

When you get down to the bottom of the hitter stats, you can tell why these guys don't get many AB opportunities. Our depth is definitely a factor in our struggles. This will be something we need to address. Our starting rotation also leaves a lot to be desired. This is why we eventually decided to make the move involving Nolan Jones to get Bobby Miller to help bolster our rotation.

We currently have 6 guys in the top 100 prospects, so here they are and the stats they currently have at their respected level:

                              #16 - RF Josue De Paula - AAA - .233 avg, .378 OBP, with 7 hits, 1 HR, and 3 RBIs.
                              #22 - SS Adael Amador - AA - .200 avg, .241 OBP, with 15 hits, 1 HR and 4 RBIs
                              #40 - LF Yanquiel Fernandez - AA - .290 avg, .383 OBP, with 20 hits, 4 HR and 16 RBIs
                              #41 - SP Chase Dollander - AA - 1-3 W-L, 31.2 IP, 27 Ks, 2.56 ERA, 1.17 WHIP
                              #53 - RF Zac Veen - AA - .205 avg, .289 OBP, with 15 hits, 1 HR, and 6 RBIs
                              #64 - 3B Sterlin Thompson - AA - .211 avg, .300 OBP, with 15 hits, 0 HR, and 7 RBIs

We'll be keeping an eye on these guys progress to see if they are showing signs of being ready for the majors. Currently, the only one trending that way is Yanquiel Fernandez, but we will continue to monitor the situation.

On a side note, RP Daniel Bard and RP Lucas Gilbreath have returned from their injury but we have decided to start them off in AAA so that they can get a little extra work in before we start relying on them on the major league level.

                                Cardinals Drop Series in Houston

The Cardinals (28-34) had a golden opportunity to get closer in the division race as the Brewers were swept in their series, but failed to gain much ground losing 2 of 3 to the Astros in Houston.

Pitching continues to be a major concern for the Cardinals. Lance Lynn was once again dominated early and knocked out early in his start. Lynn gave up 8 runs on 7 hits over 3.1 innings of work. Sonny Gray who got the ball Tuesday, struggled as well. He did make it 5 innings, but should've been pulled sooner, but the Cards needed to give the bullpen some type of rest. When Gray left the bullpen was just as ineffective as he was. The Cardinals won the game, but it took scoring 15 runs to win by 2. Kyle Gibson started the finale and was solid, but Alex Reyes and Keynan Middleton combined to give up 6 runs in 2 innings as the Astros erased a 5-0 deficit to win by a single run, 6-5.

The Cardinals return home as they welcome the Rockies to town for a 4 game weekend series.

                                News From Around the League

                                * The Padres continue to struggle as we are about a week into June. The Padres were expected to compete with the D'Backs and Dodgers for the NL West crown, but currently sit 17.5 games behind those two. The Padres could end up being sellers at the trade deadline.

                                * The Phillies continue to be the hottest team in baseball and currently lead the Braves by 12 games in the NL East. The Phillies also currently hold the best record in baseball.

                                * Speaking of the Phillies, they were delivered a major blow this past weekend when 1B/OF Bryce Harper was lost for the season with a torn rotator cuff. This will likely result in the Phillies seeking a first baseman come July.

                                * The Cardinals are in the midst and path to having their 2nd straight losing season under manager Oliver Marmol. The front office is said to be debating between either taking a big swing in the trade market in hopes of turning things around and making a run at the postseason, and start trading off pieces to bring back young talent and look to rebuild this offseason for the 2025 season.

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(
