Braves Again Find a Way to Win Series, Take Two Out of Three Against Yanks

    June 21-23, 2024

In a series matchups of potential World Series contenders, the Atlanta Braves took down the New York Yankees on the road in an exciting series.

Game one featured plenty of offense on both sides. Marcus Stroman took the mound for New York but probably wishes he missed his turn in the rotation. Austin Riley and Matt Olson hit back-to-back homers in the first inning as part of a four-run start for Atlanta. An Orlando Arcia homer in the second chased Marcus Stroman out of the game with five runs given up while recording just five outs. Bryce Elder had plenty of struggles himself, giving up five runs in five innings, with a three-run third being led by Juan Soto and Austin Wells homers. In a battle of the bullpens, Atlanta got the upper hand as theirs didn't give up a run, while Ozuna double and another Arcia hit led to an eventual 8-5 win.

Game two saw Cy Young favorite Spencer Strider against Carlos Rodon, who is having a really strong bounce-back campaign for New York. Both starters were really good, getting through four innings of scoreless ball for both before an Ozuna double and Arcia RBI single gave the Braves a 2-0 lead in the fifth. Strider ran into his trouble in the sixth, allowing four of his six hits allowed and three earned runs to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead. The biggest hit of the inning was a Giancarlo Stanton single that Riley dove to knock down but still scored the third run. Ron Marinaccio took the mound in the seventh for the Yankees and gave up only his second home run of the season to Ozuna to tie the game. The top of the eighth saw Michael Harris get a chance off of lefty reliever Caled Ferguson. Harris would hit a ball that would not have been a homer in many ballparks and that was almost robbed by Soto, but was just enough to give the Braves a 4-3 lead. Raisel Iglesias gave up a single and a hit batter to start the bottom of the ninth, but got a double play from Anthony Volpe and struck out Oswald Peraza to save the 4-3 win.

Game three was all Yankees, who scored 10 runs in the first three innings in a dreadful start for Max Fried (2.2 IP, six hits, eight runs, five earned). Pierce Johnson gave up six runs in three innings as well. The only positives in this game were homers for Riley and Ozuna as the Yankees cruised to a 15-3 win.

Up next, the Braves (56-21) will continue their road trip with three games against the St Louis Cardinals (43-35). The Cardinals have rebounded nicely from a down 2023 behind a strong rotation and an offense that does just enough with Paul Goldschmidt (16 homers, .831 OPS), Nolan Godman (12 homers, .813 OPS), Nolan Arenado (10 homers, .800 OPS), and Jordan Walker (10 homers, .854 OPS).

I played the Strider-Rodon game this series instead of the opener to get a chance to see an improved Rodon with our ace, and man the whole game just felt like a playoff type matchup. Soto missing Harris's homer and Iglesias' strikeout of Cabrera had me like I had just won the series

I was hoping to decide by April 1st, but today it's officially going to be a Rockies rebuild.

I wanted to use my Guardians but they just don't fall in to my "fun" categories.

      1) bad team that needs a rebuild.
      2) haven't had post season success in a long time, or ever.

Soooo. here we go...a LOT of work to do with that team.

Braves Take Back and Forth Series Against Cardinals

        June 24-26, 2024

A potential playoff matchup, both the Atlanta Braves and St Louis Cardinals entered this series leading their division. Only one team would leave it in the same spot in the standings, as the Braves two despite the best efforts of the Cardinals.

Game one had the makings of a blowout, as a Matt Olson homer jump started a four-run second inning that also featured a solo shot from Marcell Ozuna. Michael Harris would take on a two-run dinger himself in the fourth and the Braves were up 6-0 off of Lance Lynn while Chris Sale was dealing. Sale would get into some trouble in the fourth and would give up two runs off of Brendan Donovan and Jordan Walker hits. Jarred Kelenic would extend the Braves lead with a homer in the seventh, but Dylan Lee fell apart in the bottom of the seventh, giving up three hits, including a double Tommy Edman, and allowing three runs. Now at 7-5, the Braves got some cushion again as Ronald Acuna took Matthew Liberatore deep in the top of the eighth. AJ Minter and Raisel Iglesias would close the door on an 8-5 win.

Game two sure looked like another victory for the Braves, as a homer from Sean Murphy and a two RBI performance for Kelenic would have them leading 5-1 through the top of the sixth with Charlie Morton cruising. The Cardinals would get hot and eventually tie the game after scoring two off of Morton and two off of Tyler Matzek in the bottom of the sixth. A William Contreras homer off of Reynaldo Lopez in the bottom of the seventh would eventually be the winning run of a 6-5 win for Atlanta.

After a rough start against the Yankees in his last start, Bryce Elder rolled into St Louis and took care of business in the third game, going six scoreless. Homers from Harris, Azuna, Olson, and Ozzie Albies powered the Braves to an impressive 6-0 win in the rubber match.

The Braves now stand at 58-22 and made it through a tough five series stretch against the Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Rays, Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, and the Cardinals with a 10-5 record, winning two out of three in every series. Up next, they get a slightly easier matchup, as Atlanta heads back home to finish out June against the Pittsburgh Pirates (32-48). Atlanta swept Pittsburgh on the road in their last series.

Was trying so hard to hold out till Friday for the roster update, but the more and more I think about it, what am I really missing? A few announcer comments on the Cubs pitcher? I have the INT guys already on a created roster. The only one that really bothers me is Sano is put in as a rookie. But really it's not that bad. Seeing all your guys posts on your franchise has me eager to start rather than wait the 2 days. I've toyed with a few teams but really leaning towards a TB or Houston franchise. More so Houston. Think I'll give each one more game. Honestly only want Tampa for Caminiero and Houston because I've finally let the trash can incident go and think it would be fun to use a team I've never even done a quick game with.

Atlanta Finishes June With Series Win Over Pittsburgh at Home

              June 28-30, 2024

It is good to be an Atlanta Braves fan, as they kept up their strong play against a young and struggling, but exciting, Pittsburgh Pirates team. The opener showed another really strong performance from Spencer Strider, who went 7.1 IP and gave up two runs (including a monster shot from Rowdy Tellez). He wasn't the star of the show though, as the Month of Matt continued as slugging first baseman Matt Olson put up a career performance by hitting three home runs off of Mitch Keller. Olson is now second in the majors, behind teammate Austin Riley, with 31 homers. Outside of Olson, Keller was solid, but those three swings contributed all four earned runs in five innings. The rest of the offense managed a few runs against the bullpen, and the Braves finished with a 6-2 win.

Jarred Kelenic got hurt in the second game of the series, landing on the 10 Day IL with a shoulder pull. This didn't dampen the team performance though, as Riley and Ozzie Albies (twice) went deep, Ronald Acuna scored three times, and the offense raced to 11 total runs. Max Fried was mostly strong, but two runs allowed in the seventh inning dampened the day, as he completed that seventh inning with four runs allowed. The Braves win 11-5.

The Braves have been exceptional when they have a rubber match, but have lost a ton when they have already won the series heading into the third game. That continued, despite the offense scoring eight runs thanks to homers from Michael Harris, Marcell Ozuna, and Acuna. Chris Sale had his worst performance since April, only completing four innings while walking four and allowing eight hits to knock in six runs. Pierce Johnson's bad June continued as he allowed a few runs himself, and the Braves fall 9-8 despite three runs in the bottom of the ninth.

The Braves stand at 60-23 and are 18.5 games up over a Philadelphia Phillies team that they are set to face after the next series. Before that, the Braves will stay at home for three games against a below .500 San Francisco Giants team that is currently at 41-44. Adam Duvall was already platooning with Kelenic by starting against lefties and now will take his turn against righties until his return.

                Atlanta Braves June 2024 Recap

                Monthly Record: 19-7
                Season Record: 60-23
                NL East Standings: Braves 60-23, Phillies 42-42 (18.5 GB), Mets 37-46 (23), Marlins 35-49 (25.5), Nationals 28-55 (32)
Offensive Player of the Month: Matt Olson - How about a .404 average, 16 homers, and 30 RBI? It is not that Olson was completely struggling, but he wasn’t quite living up to expectations heading into June after a monster 2023. Well he answered that by raising his OPS by nearly 200 points. Despite some monster performances from Michael Harris and Ronald Acuna, along with another good month from Austin Riley, Olson takes the cake.
Pitcher of the Month: Raisel Iglesias - Like last month, we could always go the always dominant Spencer Strider, but instead we will give credit to a really strong month for Iglesias after he as the "Player That Struggled" in May. Iglesias racked up nine saves and only allowed one run in those outings, cementing himself again in the closer role.
Player That Disappointed: Sean Murphy - Murphy has not been horrible. He has kept his average around the .250 mark all season and does have 12 homers, but his walk rate has fallen almost in half and has gone through three months with an OBP below .300. He’s due for a good week or two to get things back on track after posting an OPs of .844 in 2023.
Player That Surprised: Ozzie Albies - Always underrated and overshadowed, Albies has been extremely consistent this season and looks poised to easily set career marks. Through June, he has hit 24 homers with an OPS of .985. He’s been an MVP level performer on a team full of them.

                Prospect Watch
                • At roughly the halfway point of the minor league season, we will take a look at some of the Braves’ top prospects.
                • The top guy is AJ Smith Shawver, who is really progressing after a cup of coffee at 20 years old in 2023. In 16 starts, AJSS has posted an ERA of 3.52 with 82 Ks in 84.1 IP. He still needs to get his walk rate down, but he appears poised for a rotation sport in 2025.
                • Hurston Waldrep entered the season as the Braves top prospect, but a horrid April put a damper on that. Waldrep is slowly rebounding, working an ERA north of 8.00 down to 5.72 over the past two months. Unlike AJSS, Waldrep appears more like a 2026 guy, perfectly fine for a 21 year old.
                • Owen Murphy, Dylan Dodd, and Spencer Schwellenback have all been solid, with Murphy showing the most promise. All are still a few years away from being potential rotation assets.
                • Ignacia “Nacho” Alvarez doesn’t have the pure tools to be a likely MLB starter, but the 20 year old has gotten off to a solid start in AA, posting a .709 OPS. There’s enough speed and defense to play, but he hasn’t provided enough gap-to-gap power yet.

Thoughts for June: Another successful month for the Braves. At this point, there doesn’t seem to be a rush to make a change at the trade deadline barring an injury, the majority of the team is playing well. This is pacing again as a historic offense, the rotation has been fantastic, and the key members of the bullpen have been very good. This is not just a title contender, this is the World Series favorite.

If the game kept track of stupid baserunning mistakes I would lead the league and it wouldn't even be close. I must cost myself at least one run per game. I needed a walkoff in game three to avoid getting swept by the Pirates, I even told myself nothing stupid on the bases this game, keep it conservative. Then Francisco Alvarez leads off the 7th in a tie game with a double and the throw gets away and I couldn't help myself. Needless to say he was thrown out at third. Fortunately he walked us off in the 9th

From there I headed out west for three against the Dodgers and three against the Giants. I just absolutely stole a game from the Dodgers with a five out 7th inning. 4-4 tie and twice I reached first base on strike three on some nasty sliders and it directly resulted in me taking a 7-4 lead and going on to win 8-5.

There is just something about Ronny Mauricio's swing that makes it easy to hit with him. He's got himself a nice 15 game hitting streak going right now.

Re: MLB The Show 24 Franchise Mode Discussion Thread

A bad start post all-star break may have led to some very bad decisions. We opened up the 2nd half with a sweep at the hands of the White Sox before following that up by losing 2 of 3 to the Diamondbacks to fall to 4 games under .500. It was still good enough for 1st place, but I didn't have faith that the team would be good enough to win should we somehow make the playoffs. Or that the other teams in the division would continue to be bad enough to stay in 1st place with a losing record. So I decided to do what was best for the future and make some trades.

The first move was to trade our longest-tenured player, our captain, Salvador Perez. There were rumors of potential trades for him at the deadline last year. This time we made it happen, sending him + cash to the Los Angeles Angels, and receiving 18-year-old RF Nelson Rada in return. The Angels were in a wildcard spot with catcher Logan O'Hoppe hitting just .175 on the season. Later that night we made our 2nd trade, sending SP Michael Wacha + cash to the Braves in exchange for 21-year-old 3B Sabin Ceballos and 18-year-old CF Isaiah Drake. Will Smith would pick up the save that night's game and find himself on a new team the following day. In our 3rd and final trade, he was sent to the Baltimore Orioles for 23-year-old RF John Rhodes.

Following the trades the team managed to work their way back to .500 by the end of the month. August started with a series of wins and losses to stay at .500 before sweeping the Cardinals and taking 2 of 3 from the Twins to get to 2 games over. From there it was all downhill. We went 3 and 12 to finish August and start September losing 6 of 7. A random sweep of the Yankees in New York was followed with the team getting swept in Pittsburgh. We would win the following series taking 2 of 3 from the Tigers before ending the season losing 2 of the 3 to the Giants and Nationals and being swept by the Braves. The Twins ended up winning 9 of the last 12 games to finish 82-80 and winning the division by 5 games over the Guardians.

The offense over the 2nd half was largely disappointing. Bobby struggled the entire time finishing with just about all stats being worse than 2023. Vinnie Pasquantino on the other hand was one of the few players with a strong 2nd half. Finishing with an .847 OPS and 30 HR in the first full season of his career.

The 2nd half of the season also wasn't as kind to the Pitching as it was in the first half. Though was still a major improvement over the 2023 season. Brady Singer coming off the worst season of his career put up the best season of his career. Leading the majors in innings pitched at 198.1 while putting up a 3.09 ERA. Daniel Lynch followed in his footsteps with the best season of his career. Putting up a 3.48 ERA in 111.1 innings after starting the year in AAA. Cole Ragans wasn't as good as we hoped coming into the season but his 2nd half was strong as he finished with a career-high 159.1 IP while putting up a 3.95 ERA and 3.40 FIP. Out in the bullpen, Chris Stratton was our best reliver overall this year putting up a 1.25 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in 65 IP. Carlos Hernandez was also fantastic in his first full season as a reliever putting up a 2.29 ERA in just under 40 IP. The pen overall was good with the worst ERA at the end of the season being Jake Brentz at 4.35.

After fighting to be .500 all season, The Twins did what I thought was impossible. Had we decided not to make those trades, maybe add a bat instead. Could we have done the same? Could we have gotten hot at the end? Carry it into October and go on a run? The worst division winner, from the worst division. Goes on to beat the best team all season. And they do it in 5 games.

Manager Matt Quatraro is going into the final year of his contract. 1st base coach Max Beacham had his contract expire and likely won't be back. The rest of the coaching staff is still under contract but we could end up making some more changes there. We have only 3 players in the organization who are set to be free agents, RP Luis Cessa, RP Tyler Duffey, and SS Garrett Hampson. We would like to bring Hampson back and Duffey was pretty good for us as well so he may be back as well. Cessa spent the entire season in AAA and probably won't be back.

Players announcing their retirement include Joey Votto, Charlie Morton, Brandon Crawford, Matt Carpenter, and Lance Lynn. No one retiring this year is expected to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Braves Win Thrilling Series With Hard Fighting Giants

                          July 2-4, 2024

The Atlanta Braves cruised into this series as the best team in baseball while the San Francisco Giants are fighting for their playoff lives, and the Giants gave Atlanta everything they could handle.

The opener presented two dominant outings from Charlie Morton and Logan Webb. While Morton gave up two runs over six great innings, Atlanta had no answer for Logan Webb. Webb's devastating changeup dominated Braves' hitters, as he completed 6.2 innings and struck out 10 batters while walking nobody. The Braves found themselves down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth with former Brave Luke Jackson on the mound. Michael Harris reached first with a walk before Ronald Acuna and Austin Riley hit pop ups, but Matt Olson came through with a 473 foot home run to tie the game up. The next pitch was a hanger that Ozzie Albies left in the stands to give the Braves a 3-2 lead heading into the ninth. Raisel Iglesias had a dominant July, but it was not meant to be in this one, as a walk of JD Davis would be followed by a down-the-middle changeup that Blake Sabol took deep to give the Giants a 4-3 lead. With Camilo Doval on for the save, Sean Murphy would line out before Adam Duvall and Orlando Arcia would single. With two runners on, Doval would force a pop up from Harris. Up stepped Ronald Acuna, who got a 2-0 count and drove a fastball that was caught by Jorge Soler at the wall for a 4-3 win for the Giants.

The second game also had two great starting performances, as Bryce Elder only allowed a Mike Yastremski homer in the second inning out seven dominant ones. The Giants had Jordan Hicks on the mound, who was only able to go 4.1 IP before leaving the game with a minor injury, giving up one run on a Matt Olson single. With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Arcia hit a two-run homer off of Ethan Small. Joe Jimenez did give up a run in the eighth, but Iglesias got a quick 1-2-3 in the ninth for a 3-2 win for the Braves.

In the rubber match, Spencer Strider took the mound for Atlanta against a struggling Robbie Ray. Strider again continued his outstanding season, going seven innings with nine strikeouts and one earned run allowed, though an Adam Duvall error did allow another to score. The Braves got off to a good start off of Ray, scoring three runs in the first two innings with an Albies homer for two runs being the big shot. Ray would end up with six innings and just those runs allowed as he settled in. Up 3-2 in the eighth, Harris hit a triple to score Arcia, and another Iglesias save would give the Braves a 4-2 win to complete an excellent series.

The Braves now stand at 62-24 and now have a three-game set at home against the Philadelphia Phillies, who are at a disappointing 44-43 record but still in second place in the division and are the last wild card spot right now. The two rivals have only had one series this year, being the opening one where Philadelphia took two out of three.

                              July 13: Archers 8, Hops 1
                              July 14: Archers 5, Hops 2

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - St. George hit 15 home runs in a three game sweep of the Flagstaff Hops to end the first half of the season in first place in the ML West. The Archers have a four game lead as we head into the All-Star break with the Hops slipping into a tie for last in the West, 16 games below .500.

The Archers hit four home runs in the opener and cruised to an 8-2 victory. Fred Roberts went 3 for 4 with an inside-the-park home run, driving in two to help lead St George to the victory.

St George got on the borad in the top of the first on an RBI single from Cardona, driving home Mikey Fisher. The Hops would tie it up in the bottom half on a solo home run from Thomas Sanders, his second on the year.

Fred Roberts then hit his inside-the-park home run in the top of the second to put the Archers in front for good. Mikey Fisher would double home Scottie Hager to make it 3-1. A Fred Roberts two-out RBI single in the third put the Archers up by three.

St. George would then score four times in the eighth to blow this one open. Sam Robinson (8) and Angel Montes (10) hit back-to-back one out home runs and Scottie Hager (13) would add a two-run shot later in the inning.

David Petrovski would hit a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, his sixth on the year.

Russell Fluty (3-9) was knocked around for four runs on seven hits in just four innings of work. He struck out two and walked two. Sam Varela gave up three runs on three hits while only managing to get one batter out in the eighth.

Alvin Gellman (2-2) picked up the win for the Archers. He went six innings, allowing one run on three hits, while striking out seven.

On Saturday afternoon, the Archers, who lead the league in home runs, hit five more bombs on their way to an 8-1 victory. St George pounded out 16 hits as they cruised against Ryan Pressley and the Hops.

St. George got off to a quick start in the first as Jamaall McCormack homered, the solo shot was his 27th on the year. Roberto Geronimo led off the game for Flagstaff with a solo home run to right, his 17th on the year, to tie the game at 1-1.

Back-to-back home runs from Mikey Fisher (14) and Angel Montes (11) in the third put St George ahead for good. A two-run double from Mikey Fisher in the fourth and an Angel Montes RBI single added three more for the Archers. A Fred Roberts solo home run (11) in the fifth put St George up 7-1. A Sammy Gomez solo home run (14) in the eighth made it 8-1.

Ryan Pressley (7-9) took the loss, allowing seven runs on 12 hits in six innings of work. He struck out nine and walked one. Taylor Austin (8-8) picked up the win for the Archers. He went seven innings, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out nine and walking one.

Robbie Westbrook's 17-game hitting streak came to an end on Saturday afternoon. He went 0 for 4, lining out to left in the ninth to end the streak.

On Sunday afternoon, the Hops first half came to a merciful end as the Archers hit four more home runs on their way to a 5-2 victory to earn the sweep of the three game weekend series. The Hops managed just three hits in the finale and now look like a team that will likely miss the postseason in 2024.

St George grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third on an Eric Klein solo home run, his 11th on the year. They would extend that lead to 3-0 in the fourth on a Harper Reyes solo home run and Sammy Gomez RBI single. A Roberto Geronimo solo home run in the fourth got the Hops on the board. It was his 18th on the year.

But back-to-back home runs from Angel Montes and Jamaal McCormack in the fifth made it 5-1 and the Archers would cruise to the win.

A Robbie Westbrook RBI double in the sixth would score Flagstaff's second run.

Geraldo Rodriguez (3-7) was credited with the loss. He pitched five plus innings, allowing five runs on ten hits. Sam Varela, Oliver Benedict and Vic Miller worked four scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit. Vic Miller struck out the side in the ninth.

Roberto Velasquez (3-2) picked up the win for the Archers. He pitched six innings, allowing two runs on two hits. He struck out four.

The Hops (41-57) head into the All-Star Break with a lot of questions. They are a young team, so do they sell some veterans at the trade deadline and look towards the future or do they stay the course with the current roster heading into 2025?

Around the League: San Diego's Oscar Huerta (6-4) tossed a complete game three-hit shutout as the Seals defeated red-hot Las Vegas 3-0 to move 2.5 games clear of the Niggets in the DL West. A two-run double from Luis Alfonzo in the second inning proved to be all that Huerta would need in the opener of this big three game series.

Rio Rancho's Rollie Flingers (15-2) solidified his spot as the leading Mountain League Cy Young candidate on Friday night as he tossed eight strong innings, allowing one run on five hits, while striking out nine, as the Owlz defeated Roswell 3-1. A two-out, two-run single from Darrick Larkin in the bottom of the seventh put the Owlz ahead to stay as they improved to (55-42) and sit atop the ML Central.

Salt Lake's Alolfo Villarreal went 3 for 4 with two home runs (9,10) and six RBIs as the Chukars crushed Santa Fe 18-8 on Saturday afternoon.

Fred Roberts and the Archers used the long ball to sweep the Hops as the teams head into the All-Star Break.

Braves Make Their Statement, Sweep Phillies in Three Close Games

                                July 5-7, 2024

The Philadelphia Phillies badly needed a series win, as they have been dreadful for the past few weeks, but despite their best efforts, the Atlanta Braves just would not let that happen.

The first game was a tight 3-2 win for the Braves, with Max Fried giving up a two-run homer in the first inning to Bryce Harper and then putting together one of the best starts of the season, going 6.1 IP with 10 strikeouts. Ranger Suarez gave Atlanta plenty of fits, with an Austin Riley homer in the first inning the only thing the Braves had on the board until Riley and Matt Olson got back-to-back RBI singles in the sixth inning to give the Braves their first lead. Raisel Iglesias pitched his fourth straight game and recorded three strikeouts for his 26th save.

The second win was produced by a four-run, bottom of the ninth comeback victory that ended with a Marcell Ozuna three-run walk off homer. This made up for a horrible eighth inning from Dylan Lee, who gave up three runs, including a two-run shot from Nick Castellanos. The Braves also got homers from Acuna and Michael Harris. Chris Sale went seven innings and allowed two runs, with Aaron Bummer getting the save.

The third game also saw a walk off, with David Fletcher getting a single in the bottom of the 10th. This made up for an Iglesias blown save, his second early in June, after Charlie Morton posted a solid 5.1 IP with two earned. Sean Murphy had a solid game offensively, with two hits, including a homer, with three RBI.

The Braves are in a historic spot, up 21.5 games in the division as the Phillies are still in second place before even making the All Star Break. Atlanta's 65-24 is still the best record in baseball and they take on a road trip to Arizona to play the 47-43 Diamondbacks.
