A's end losing streak as they split series with struggling Yankees
The Athletics losing streak reached seven before they ended it on Monday night against the Yankees. The A's won that game 7-2 behind homeruns by Ryan Noda, Brent Rooker and Seth Brown.
The middle two games of the series were duds for the Athletics as they failed to score in either game. That is especially disheartening because both Ross Stripling (6.0 IP/4 H/1 R/8 SO) and Hogan Harris (6.0 IP/5 H/2 R/7 SO) were great and just didnt get any run support. It wasnt even just the lack of runs but overall offensive inepitude as Oakland managed just three hits in each of the two losses.
Then came game three that would see the teams' aces matchup against one another. Gerrit Cole took the mound for the Yankees and Paul Blackburn for the A's. Neither were particularly dominate but both kept their teams in the game. Cole also left in the fifth inning after he felt some discomfort after a pitch.
The Sixth inning is where things got interesting. Going into that inning, the teams were tied up at a score of 2-2. Victor Gonzalez started the inning pitching for the Yankees after he finished the 5th up for Cole. Gonzalez went on to walk the first batter of the inning, Seth Brown. He then got Tyler Soderstrom to fly out before he allowed the bases to get loaded with a single by Miguel Andujar and another walk, for Jordan Diaz. Aledmys Diaz then hit a clutch 3-2 single into center field that scored both Brown and Andujar. Abraham Toro also added his own two rbi single later in the inning as the Pirates scored four and took the lead, 6-2.
Blackburn pitched through the sixth inning for the A's but did give up two more runs when Anthony Volpe hit his fourth homerun of the season, knocking in Giancarlo Stanton had singled earlier in the inning.
Neither team scored after the sixth inning as the Athletics took the 6-4 victory to split the series.
The A's will now finish off their road trip with three in Baltimore to face the AL East leading Orioles (18-6).
