    2024 Oakland Athletics 04/22-04/25

    Overall Record:10-16 (5th AL West/7.0 behind Houston)

    Game Results:

    Game 1
    Athletics-7
    Yankees-2

    Game 2
    Yankees-1
    Athletics-0

    Game 3
    Yankees-2
    Athletics-0

    Game 4
    Athletics-6
    Yankees-4

A's end losing streak as they split series with struggling Yankees

The Athletics losing streak reached seven before they ended it on Monday night against the Yankees. The A's won that game 7-2 behind homeruns by Ryan Noda, Brent Rooker and Seth Brown.

The middle two games of the series were duds for the Athletics as they failed to score in either game. That is especially disheartening because both Ross Stripling (6.0 IP/4 H/1 R/8 SO) and Hogan Harris (6.0 IP/5 H/2 R/7 SO) were great and just didnt get any run support. It wasnt even just the lack of runs but overall offensive inepitude as Oakland managed just three hits in each of the two losses.

Then came game three that would see the teams' aces matchup against one another. Gerrit Cole took the mound for the Yankees and Paul Blackburn for the A's. Neither were particularly dominate but both kept their teams in the game. Cole also left in the fifth inning after he felt some discomfort after a pitch.

The Sixth inning is where things got interesting. Going into that inning, the teams were tied up at a score of 2-2. Victor Gonzalez started the inning pitching for the Yankees after he finished the 5th up for Cole. Gonzalez went on to walk the first batter of the inning, Seth Brown. He then got Tyler Soderstrom to fly out before he allowed the bases to get loaded with a single by Miguel Andujar and another walk, for Jordan Diaz. Aledmys Diaz then hit a clutch 3-2 single into center field that scored both Brown and Andujar. Abraham Toro also added his own two rbi single later in the inning as the Pirates scored four and took the lead, 6-2.

Blackburn pitched through the sixth inning for the A's but did give up two more runs when Anthony Volpe hit his fourth homerun of the season, knocking in Giancarlo Stanton had singled earlier in the inning.

Neither team scored after the sixth inning as the Athletics took the 6-4 victory to split the series.

The A's will now finish off their road trip with three in Baltimore to face the AL East leading Orioles (18-6).

Re: MLB The Show 24 Franchise Mode Discussion Thread

I started a three game series against the Royals and played one of the worst games I've ever played. They threw me low changeups out of the zone and sliders down and away all game and I swung at all of them. We lost 3-1 with the only run coming on a fastball they threw to Lindor that he turned in to a HR.

Game two, I don't normally mess with alternate uniforms but I decided to go with the Mets non pinstripe white jersey and blue hat which is coincidentally what the Mets wore when Johan Santana threw the teams first no hitter. Tylor Megill, who didn't make it out of the second inning two starts ago ended up throwing a no hitter as we won 5-0. Pretty cool that they started bringing up the Santana no hitter around the 7th-8th inning.

Its been some time since I last played the show. 2013 maybe?

What are the biggest improvements made to franchise mode since then?

Edit: Did a bit of googling and the biggest change seems to be custom stadiums. As far as big features there doesn't look to be much. To narrow the field and make it easier to answer my question, how immersive is franchise? Mostly curious about presentation. Is dynamic attendance still present and does commentary vary based on how your season is going? Does the rest of the league feel "alive?"

Despite being outscored by 25 runs and having a 13-14 record in division games, the Royals head into the all-star break leading the AL Central for the first time since 2015. We lost 3 of the last 4 heading into the break, but we managed to go 11-2 before that to pull ahead of Guardians and move into 1st place. The Twins have also been on a tear recently, going 9-1 in their last 10 while having the best record against the division at 20-13. We picked up series wins against the Padres, Guardians 2x, Mariners, A's, Marlins, Rays, and Rockies. Split a 2 game series against the Cardinals and lost series to the Yankees, Dodgers, Rangers, and Red Sox.

The offense has still had some trouble getting on base. But when they make contact with the ball, there is a good chance the player will be on second or better. We are hitting .249/.301/.430, placing us 23rd, 28th, and 7th in the league. Our 236 walks are second worst to only the Marlins and our 725 strikeouts are ninth most. We are tied with the Blue Jays and Pirates for 13th with 164 Doubles, tied with the Brewers for 2nd with 29 Triples, and tied with the Twins for 4th with 127 Home Runs. You would think with so many extra-base hits, our GIDP totals wouldn't be that bad. Instead, we have managed to be 2nd worst with 74.

                Spoiler

As the weather gets hotter, so does Bobby. After starting 2023 hitting .228/.266/.430 through May, he went on to hit .303/.347/.530 the rest of the way. 2024 seems to be going the same way for him. Through May, he was hitting .244/.304/.425, and in the 37 games since has hit .331/.392/.541. Kyle Isbel has also been on fire after losing his job to Dairon Blanco earlier this season. Isbel finished May hitting .155/.225/.238, and in 92 AB since he has hit .348/.387/.457. It could not have come at a better time, with Blanco getting hurt. Renfroe and Salvy continue to fight each other for the team lead in HR and RBI. Both tied with 22 HR, while Salvy's 54 RBIs lead the team, 1 ahead of Renfroe.

The revamped pitching staff has continued to impress this season with a team ERA of 3.71, good for 8th in the league and almost a run and a half better than the 5.17 ERA we had last season. The team is now 4th in walks allowed, Home Runs allowed and Saves with 275, 101, and 35, respectively. We are 19th in Strikeouts with 677 and tied for 8th in Blown Saves with 11. We are also tied for 2nd in Complete games with 4, 2 from Brady Singer and 1 from Seth Lugo and Daniel Lynch.

                Pitching Stats
                Spoiler

In late June, Cole Ragans went on the injured list with a pulled shoulder. He probably would have been fine staying off of it, but we decided to give him some rest and let Kris Bubic get a shot in the Majors after he put up a 1.60 ERA in 33.2 IP in Triple-A after starting the year on the IL. He made two starts while Ragans was out, going 5.2 innings with 2 ER and then 2.2 innings with 2 ER. When Ragans returned, we had to choose between Bubic and Austin Cox. Cox had just given up 3 runs in 1.1 innings out of the pen, so we decided to go with Bubic and traded Cox to the Angels for SS Livan Soto. The Angels hold a wildcard spot and had 2 starters in the IL. Cox made 1 start for the Angels, going 5.1 IP with no runs allowed, then broke his wrist.

Brady Singer's career-best season continues. He is now 10-5 with a 2.59 ERA in 125 IP. He is second in the AL in WAR with 2.9 and third overall. Daniel Lynch has also solidified his spot in the rotation, going 4-0 with a 2.02 ERA in 49 IP. Will Smith returned from the IL 2 weeks ago and has picked up right where he left off. He now has 10 saves with no runs allowed.

We start the 2nd half with 9 straight home games, 3 against the White Sox, Diamondbacks, and Cubs, before finishing the month on the road against the White Sox. 39 games before we hit September. 21 of them against teams under .500 and 16 against division rivals with 13 of those on the road. So, hopefully, we can improve our 13-14 division record. Depending on how the next 10 days go, there could be more trades in store. Salv, Lugo, Wacha, Will Smith, and Chris Stratton could be available.

                  Cardinals Drop Series to Orioles

The Cardinals (20-30) dropped 2 games of their 3 game series with the Orioles to begin the week. The Cardinals find themselves 9 games back of the Brewers.

The Cardinals just cannot seem to build momentum. On Monday they had a 2-1 lead going into the 9th inning when Ryan Helsley blew the save after back to back walks and then a 2-run double by Jorge Moteo, all with 2 outs. Tuesday the Cardinals held on to win 5-4 after the bullpen ruined a quality start by Matthew Liberatore. On Wednesday Lance Lynn was good allowing 4 runs over 6 innings, but the bats were dormant pushing across a single run on a Ivan Herrera single.

The Cardinals are off on Thursday but will welcome the Cubs to town for a 3 game weekend series. If the Cardinals are ever going to get back in this thing, a series win, preferably a sweep, of the Cubs would be a good start.

                    Tigers(9-6) Split 4 Gamer with Twins(3-12)

After dropping the first two of the series to the struggling Twins, the Tigers bounced back to win the last two and earn the series split.

Game 1 was a pitchers duel between Manning and Paddack, however it would not matter as the Tigers would get 1 in the 8th. Twins would tie again on Lange's 3rd blown save of the year, and then capitalize again in the 10th with the Tigers once again losing a contest in extras.

In Game 2, which was another low scoring affair, the Twins would beat the Tigers 3-2, with the difference being their first inning run, as both teams would trade 2 run inning sixths.

Game 3 finally the tide would turn back in the Tigers favor. Despite Flaherty's early struggles(3 ER in the first 3 IP), he'd bounce back and pitch 6.2 innings to get the quality start and earn his first W of the year. Riley Greene got his first hit in 3 games and it was a big one with it being a two run homer in the 6th. Tigers win 6-3.

In the series finale the game was never really in doubt, as the Tigers scored early to jump out to a 4-0 lead. The Twins would tack on a run in the 5th and the 6th to make it 4-2, but the Tigers would add on 5 more in the 7th and 8th to win it 9-3. Riley Greene was the star of the game going 5-5 and hitting for the CYCLE. Torkelson also continues on his tear as he extends his hit streak to 11 games.

Now the Tigers welcome the REDHOT Rangers to Comerica park for the back half of this 8 game homestand. Texas has gone 11-2 in their last 13 after starting the season 0-3.

                    Probable Pitching Matchups
                    Skubal, 2-0, 0.40 v Eovaldi, 1-1, 1.66
                    Manning, 2-0, 0.45 v Scherzer, 2-1, 1.71
                    Olson, 0-2, 5.63 v Gray, 3-0, 1.69
                    Flaherty, 1-1, 5.09 v Mahle, 0-2, 6.61

Cardiac Cards Use 2 Walkoff Wins in Route to Sweep of the Cubs

The Cardinals (23-30) used back to back walkoff wins to help them sweep the Cubs in a 3 game series in St.Louis over the weekend. The Cardinals are now 7 games back of the Brewers.

On Friday it was Nolan Arenado who was the hero delivering a walkoff single to score Tommy Edman from second base as the Cardinals would defeat the Cubs 5-4. This is after Alex Reyes blew the save/lead in the top half of the inning.

On Saturday it was backup catcher Ivan Herrera delivering a sac fly walk off win as the Cardinals came from behind to defeat the Cubs 3-2. The Cardinals trailed 3-0 entering the 8th inning, but got 2 runs then, and then 2 more in the 9th to steal the victory.

On Sunday, no heroics were needed as the Cardinals pounced on the Cubs to the tune of 10-4 win.

The best thing, besides the sweep, about the series was that Nolan Arenado has finally gotten his bat going. Arenado collected 7 hits in the 3 game series.

The Cardinals will now travel to Cincinnati to begin the week with a 3 game series with the Reds. Another key series for the Cardinals as they look to get back into the race.

Salt Lake City, UT (AP) - Flagstaff went into Salt Lake City and took three of four from the Chukars as they look to keep their faint playoff hopes alive as we near the All-Star Break.

The Hops opened up a four game series in Salt Lake City with an easy 6-1 victory over the Chukars. Ryan Pressley broke out of his struggles on the mound, striking out 11 and allowing just one run in eight innings of work as he improved to (7-8) on the season.

The Chukars would get on the board first, scoring a run in the second on a Rafael Geronimo solo home run, his 10th on the season.

Flagstaff would get to Thor Odinson in the fourth. Phillip Choi lined a single to left that scored Roberto Geronimo to tie the ball game. Ryan Kelly then singled home Bradley York to give Flagstaff the lead. Forrest Owen followed that with a single to center that scored Phillip Choi to make it 3-1.

In the seventh, the Hops would add three more runs. Forrest Owen homered to center to open the inning, his 10th on the year. Robbie Westbrook singled and reached second on a wild pitch. He would score on an Oscar Aleman RBI single. Roberto Geronimo would hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly that score Oscar Aleman to make it 6-1.

Ryan Pressley was dominant, tossing eight strong innings and throwing 117 pitches. He struck out 11 while scattering six hits and walking three. Aldo Osuna came on to get the final three outs in the ninth.

Thor Odinson (5-8) took the loss for Salt Lake. He went five innings, allowing three run son seven hits. He struck out seven and walked one.

On Tuesday evening, the Hops got another great pitching performance on their way to a 4-1 victory. Geraldo Rodriguez (3-6) tossed 8 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on seven hits, while striking out six as the Hops cruised to an easy win.

The Hops would jump on Gilberto Guzman in the second inning, scoring three times. Forrest Owen lined a two-out, two-run double and then scored on a Robbie Westbrook RBI single. The Hops would extend their lead to 4-0 in the fifth on a two-out Emmitt Hampton RBI single that scored Robbie Westbrook.

Salt Lake would get their lone run on a J.P. Grant solo home run with one out in the ninth off of starter Geraldo Rodriguez. Oliver Benedict then came on to get the final two outs to pick up his fifth save.

On Wednesday evening the Chukars blew a three-run lead but rallied to walk it off in the tenth in a 4-3 victory. Robby Butler singled to left in the bottom of the tenth with two outs and Thomas Sanders throw appeared to beat the runner but the umpire ruled that Phillip Choi's tag was late and the Chukars walked it off.

Salt Lake would grab a 2-0 lead in the third on an Adolfo Villarreal two-run home run, his eighth on the year. They would extend that lead to 3-0 in the fifth on a David Hernandez RBI single.

Flagstaff would tie it up in the top of the sixth thanks to a couple of home runs. Robbie Westbrook homered to open the inning, his tenth of the season. David Petrovski then hit a deep bomb to right with Thomas Sanders on to tie the ball game at 3-3.

It would remain tied into the tenth. Hills walked to open the inning and was sacrificed to second. Donnie McCloud was intentionally walked and Pedro Macias struck out David Hernandez. Manager Matt Blake then called on Aldo Osuna to try and get out of the inning, but Butler lined one past David Benitez and third and Thomas Sanders throw was just a bit off line with Phillip Choi's tag just late to allow Hills to score the game winner.

Alex Farmer did not figure in the decision but he went seven innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out six and not walking a batter. Pedro Macias (1-3) took the loss, allowing a run, but no hits in 2.2 innings of work. He struck out three and walked two.

On Thursday afternoon the Hops got som late inning heroics from Roberto Geronimo as they pulled out a 4-3 victory to take three of four from the Chukars.

Flagstaff would go up 2-0 in the top of the first on a two-run double from Emmitt Hampton. But Salt Lake would reply with a two-run double of their own from Rafael Geronimo to tie the game at 2-2.

It would remain that way into the eighth when David Benitez reached on an infield single that scored Bradley York with the go ahead run. But Rafael Geronimo would come through again. This time hitting a two-out solo home run to tie the game at 3-3 off of reliever Kenneth Valdez.

That set up Roberto Geronimo for some ninth inning heroics as he blasted a solo home run to right off of Salt Lake closer Emmett Franco to give Flagstaff a 4-3 lead. It was his team leading 16th on the year.

Vic Miller would come on and nail down his 19th save of the season to secure the series win.

Flagstaff (41-54) will now return home to host first place St. George (51-43) in a three game weekend series to close out the first half of the season.

Around the League: Chandler's Stanley Taguchi won his ninth game on the year (9-3) and Jaevan Cooper (10) and Zach Dossett (21) each homered as the Chiefs defeated Tucson 3-1 on Monday evening in the opener of a four game series.

Scottsdale's Lee Lim went 3 for 4 with a home run (22) and drove in four as the Scorpions pounded Surprise 12-2 to close the gap in the DL Central down to six games. Billy Cooper (4-5) tossed eight innings, allowing two runs on only one hit, while striking out eight and walking three. The lone Surprise hit in the ballgame was a Joe Gallagher two-run home run (11) in the fourth inning.

Glendale outlasted Phoenix 13-11 in a wild one at Camelback Ranch. The teams combined for 21 runs in the final three innings. Glendale's Jordan Munoz hit three home runs (12,13,14) and drove in eight runs for the Desert Dogs.

Long Beach's Jack Gonzalez hit a walk-off grand slam (10) in the bottom of the ninth as the Surf Dawgs rallied to stun Henderson 10-7. The DL West is a tight four team race with the top four teams separated by just 3 1/2 games with San Diego currently sitting atop the division. Long Beach is two games back with the Silver Knights in fourth, just 3 1/2 games back.

Las Vegas' red-hot Brandon Roush homered twice (12,13) as the Nuggets rallied late to win in Fort Worth 8-7 over the Kings. Sam Tejada picked up the win out of the bullpen and improved to (6-0) on the season.

Austin's Jose Caseras homered twice (15,16) and drove in five as the Fire Frogs tripped up Fort Worth 9-2.

West Texas hit seven home runs, including two each from Ernesto Lucero (20,21) and Bobby Rayburn (20,21), in a 12-7 victory at Albuquerque. Ten of the 15 hits for West Texas went for extra bases as the Bison improved to (47-48).

Our bullpen seems to really dislike Kodai Senga. Through four starts he has an ERA of .38, he left with the lead in every game and he only has one win

Big move by the jays ahead of the July 31st trade deadline, sending shortstop Addison Barger, pitcher Jimmy Robbins and recently acquired second baseman Brendan Rodgers to the Milwaukee Brewers for shortstop Willy Adames. Adames will make his Jays debut against the Texas Rangers, but at second base due to Bo Bichette being firmly planted at short
