    2024 Chicago Cubs 08/16-08/18

Overall Record: 82-43 (1st NL Central/13.5 over St. Louis)

    Game Results

    Game 1
    Cubs-3
    Blue Jays-0

    Game 2
    Blue Jays-13
    Cubs-9

    Game 3
    Cubs-4
    Blue Jays-3

    Cubs "steal" series victory

The Cubs and Blue Jays split the first two games of their mid-August series. The Cubs won the first behind Jordan Wicks first career complete game shutout. He pitched the full nine innings while allowing just four hits, no runs, 1 walk and striking out five.

The Blue Jays got out to the early 3-0 lead in game two but the Cubs fought back and scored three of their own in the third inning to tie it. Toronto then went on to score 10 unanswered between the 4,5 and 6th innings to take a commanding 13-3 lead. The Cubs tried to fight back but fell short with the final score of 13-9 in favor of the Jays.

The Jays rookie left fielder, Davis Schneider homered twice in game two and again in game three with his first coming in the second inning to give the Jays the 2-0 early lead.

The Cubs then went on to get a run back in the third. Christopher Morel singled in the inning and stole second before he was knocked in via a Pete Crow-Armstrong sacrifice fly. That would be the theme of the game as the Cubs first three runs came from a player reaching first and stealing second. The other two came from Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson. Of note, Hoerner currently leads the NL in that category with 35. Trea Turner is in second with 34. The A's Esteury Ruiz leads the majors with 41.

The game went into the 9th tied. Hector Nerris shut down the Jays top three hitters and Patrick Wisdom's double and Dansby Swanson's single walked it off for the Cubs as they took the game 4-3 and the series, 2-1.

After a day off the Cubs will finish off their homestand with three versus Detroit (60-65/2nd AL Central).

      Cardinals take series from Angels

The Cardinals (10-9) bounced back from a series sweep to the Royals to take 2 of 3 from the Angels in St.Louis. The Cardinals are still 4 games back of the Reds in the NL Central Division.

The Cardinals won both Monday and Tuesday, but were unable to secure the sweep when once again the bullpen would blow a late game lead as Will Smith blew up allowing 3 runs on 2 hits and never recorded an out.

Offensively Jordan Walker has heated up at the dish as he recorded 7 hits in the series and drove in 6 runs.

The Cardinals are off on Thursday but wil welcome the Rangers to town for a 3 game weekend series.

        Rockies-Year 3 Update:

With the Rockies taking 2 of 3 against the Dodgers in their second to last series of August, things seem to be falling in place for Colorado to take their first ever NL West division title, especially after stretching their division lead to 8.5 games over the Padres and Dodgers, who are both firmly entrenched as likely wildcard teams. Sometimes bad things happen to good teams though...

Kevin Gausman, who was very solid after being picked up just before the trade deadline in year 2, has been even better in year 3, putting up a career high 15 wins, with an ERA just above 3. At this point, he's sitting 2nd in the NL Cy Young race. Unfortunately, we won't see him pick up his first Cy Young award, and we may not even see him pitch in the playoffs, after he tore a ligament in one of his fingers, and will apparently miss somewhere between 1-2 months.

Gausman had been the most consistent starter for the Rockies this year, anchoring a rotation that includes Sandy Alcantara, Daniel Lynch, Blake Snell, and Chase Dollander. For now, his spot in the rotation will go to hard throwing rookie Ryan Cusick, who was acquired in a year 2 trade that also included current bench player, infielder Logan Davidson.

Cusick had his first taste of the majors earlier this month, starting just one game, striking out 8, allowing no walks, with 4 hits while going 6 innings. While those numbers look solid, every single one of the hits were homers, so there's a lot to worry about.

Cardinals take series from Rangers to win back to back series since first week of season

The Cardinals (12-10) won their series against the Rangers in St.Louis over the weekend and have won back to back series since the first two series of the 2026 season. The Cardinals still remain 4 behind the Reds in the NL Central.

Once again the Cardinals won the first two games of the series but were unable to complete the sweep on Sunday but this time it wasn't the bullpen but rather the bats that let the Cardinals down as the Rangers defeated the Cards 1-0.

Zach Levenson continues to be impressive this season as he started Friday and Saturday recording 5 hits with 3 RBIs and a stolen base. Levenson is hitting .383 on the season. The Cardinals are almost forced to make a decision that will put Levenson in the lineup everyday as he swings a hot bat and plays well at all 3 outfield positions.

Nolan Gorman continues to struggle hitting under .170 and the Cardinals are entertaining the idea of sending him to Memphis to try and work things out. Doing so would likely move Walker to 1st Base and let Levenson play left field while Lars Nootbaar will move to right field.

Alec Burleson and Brendan Donovan continue to both disappoint at the dish with Donovan likely to be moved out of the lineup with Edman returning from a brief IL stint and Masyn Winn moving to 2nd base.

The Cardinals will remain at home as they welcome the Marlins to town for a 4 game series to start the week.

            Cardinals split series with Marlins

The Cardinals (14-12) split their 4 game series with the Marlins in St.Louis to begin the week. The Cardinals trail the Reds by 3 games and are amongst a host of teams battling for the wildcard at this early point of the season.

The Cardinals got off to a great start winning the first two games of the series, but then lost the final pair as pitching again let the Cardinals down. Ryan Helsley continues to be inconsistent in the bullpen and Will Smith isn't showing to be the dependable pickup the Cardinals thought they were getting when signing him this past winter.

Offensively, Jordan Walker continues to impress at the plate while Nolan Gorman, Alec Burleson, and Brendan Donovan continue to be a cause of concern.

The Cardinals wil head west for a 3 game series in Oakland with the A's before heading to Colorado for a 3 game series with the Rockies to close out the month of April.

Cardinals take 3 of 4 from the Pirates and with 9 games left in the season, they hold a 5 game lead over the Cubs. The Brewers are officially out of playoff contention.

The Cardinals are still at home as they take on the Cleveland Guardians for a 3 game series. The Cubs are facing Washington and after a 4 game win streak, lost game 1 to the Nationals, 3-2.

Took the first game of the three-game series in Baltimore, 3-2 in 10 innings. One of the most fun games I've played.

After years of auto fielding, I switched back to manual for this game. Rutschman hit a drive to deep center and instead of saying "go get it Harris!" I had to get it myself. Nerve-wracking fun. Think I'm going to stick with manual the rest of the way.

I just had my first draft and got everyone's ratings once it got to August 1. I used all six picks on pitchers because the Mets have no pitchers with any upside in their farm system. I got five pitchers with A potential and only one over twenty years old, but man it seems like nobody comes in with decent velocity. Hopefully that's something that increases as they develop, I got one guy with a 94mph fastball and the other guys are topping out at 92 or 93

That sounds pretty good really. I think the average D1 pitcher throws around 89 or 90

Cubs take series to end homestand

August is creeping toward its end and the Cubs remain hot three plus weeks into the month and the team has lost just three games.

Justin Steele and Javier Assad collected the wins in the first two games with Steele going eight strong and Assad making it through six. The six innings by Javier is an improvement as he continues to work on his stamina.

The Cubs scored six runs in the fourth inning of their game two victory and later went on to score two more in the eighth off of the Tigers reliever, Alex Lange.

The bats struggled a bit in the third game that resulted in a loss. The team failed to back up a strong 7 inning, 4 hit performance by Jordan Wicks. Still, the Cubs had a chance to win it but Carl Edwards JR had his first blown save of the season as he allowed two to tie it in the ninth and another in the 10th as Chicago failed to score. As silly as it sounds, Patrick Wisdom is back on a bit of a homerun drought as its been a bit over a week since he hit his 44th.

The Cubs will now hit the road for the last eight games of August. First, they head to Miami to face the Marlins (59-68/4th NL East)

                        Cardinals sweep A's in Oakland

The Cardinals (17-12) have swept the A's in Oakland and climbed to within 2 games of the Reds for the NL Central division lead. The Reds have struggled as of late as the entire NL Central is separated by just 2.5 games.

The Cardinals offense was strong this series scoring a total of 23 runs over the 3 game series including belting 10 homeruns. The pitching was solid as well allowing only 6 runs in the series.

The Cardinals will now travel to Colorado for a 3 game series with the Rockies to close out the month of April

Homers knock Cubbies to 9th straight series victory

The Cubs totaled 11 homeruns in their series versus Miami to take the 2-1 series victory.

They got five in both the 1st and 3rd game of the series with Cody Bellinger, Yan Gomes, Christopher Morel and Patrick Wisdom hitting multiple in the series.

Gomes and Morel both had two in the third game of the series that was nearly a disastrous loss in the ninth inning.

The Cubs went into that inning up 8-2 and kept top prospect Ben Brown in the game after he pitched the previous two innings in relief.

He didn't get a single out before Ryan Mountcastle hit a rbi single to put runners on first and third with no outs. Keegan Thompson was then brought in but he too was hit hard when Nick Fortes hit a two run double to bring the score to 8-5. He was left in the game just for Jorge Mateo to hit his 5th homerun of the year, a two run shot to bring the score close at 8-7.

Luckily for the Cubs, Carl Edwards JR. then game into the game and got back on his save streak as he got the next two batters out to secure his 10th of the year.

The Cubs will now look to put their series win streak on the line as they travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Pirates (61-69/5th NL Central).

                            Cardinals drop series to Rockies

The Cardinals (18-14) dropped 2 games of their 3 game series with the Rockies in Colorado.

The Cardinals struggled with pitching although the bullpen was shot from day 1 as Walker Buehler left his start just 2 pitches into the game with neck discomfort. This put a strain on the bullpen from the get go and the Rockies took advantage in the first two games.

The Cardinals won the Wednesday finale thanks to a strong outing from Matthew Liberatore who went 7 innings giving up 2 runs on 6 hits with 5 strikeouts.

Offensively the Cardinals struggled actually being shutout on Tuesday. They did blast 4 homeruns on Wednesday in route to a 11-4 win.

The Cardinals will begin the month of May at home hosting the Rays in a 3 game weekend series.

Cardinals drop another series, this time to the Rays in St.Louis

The Cardinals (19-16) dropped another series, this time to the Rays in St.Louis over the weekend. The Cardinals still find themselves within a game of the Reds who have lost 9 of their last 10 games. The NL Central is separated from top to bottom by just 1.5 games.

Same ol story for the Cardinals as their pitching staff struggled primarily the bullpen. The Cardinals bullpen allowed 7 runs over the first two games of the series. Thankfully on Sunday, Jack Flaherty found his old form and went 8 innings allowing a single run on 3 hits. Jordan Hicks struck out the side to secure the win.

Offensively its becoming a concern that Alec Burleson and Nolan Gorman continue to struggle at the dish. So much so that manager Oliver Marmol has to consider a lineup change or the front office needs to consider optioning them to Memphis to see if they can't turn things around.

The Cardinals will host the Padres for 3 games to start the week before travelling to Los Angeles to face the Dodgers in a 3 game weekend series.

I also switched back to manual fielding, so I don't know, maybe that changed something under the hood. But Matt Olson is no longer a home run waiting to happen. I feel like I've earned it when I score now.

We swept the Orioles in three tightly-contested games, with two of them going to extra innings. Then we returned home to Truist Park and dropped two of three to the Rays. At 51-20 we have the second-best record in MLB (the Dodgers are 54-19).

It's been a season of winning streaks. The Dodgers had a 14-game streak, the Orioles a 13-game streak and the Rangers an 11-game streak earlier this year. Now the Phillies are on an 11-game streak, cutting our division lead to six games.

And Yordan Alvarez now has 33 homers for the Astros. He's on pace to hit 74.
