    Braves Lose Series in Colorado

    August 9-11, 2024

The Atlanta Braves went to Colorado to play a struggling Rockies team and left as losers of the series in shocking fashion. Game one featured two Matt Olson two-run homers with homers from Ozzie Albies and Orlando Arcia while Ronald Acuna produced two doubles and a stolen base: and the Braves lost in extra innings. Max Fried went perfect through three and the wheels started to fall off, giving up five hits and two walks with three runs over his next seven outs. Chris Martin was solid out of the bullpen, but Tyer Matzek gave up three hits and a run while getting one out before Reynaldo Lopez got out of the jam. The Braves found themselves up 5-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth, but Raisel Iglesias blew his sixth save of the season. In extras, Olson hit his second homer for a two-run lead, but AJ Minter gave up a mammoth shot to Ryan McMahon in the bottom of the 10th to tie it again. The Braves were held scoreless in the top of the 11th, and Dylan Lee allowed the runner from second to score on a single from Jacob Stallings for an 8-7 loss for the Braves.

The second game saw the Braves down 3-0 after one inning and they never recovered. Chris Sale ended up giving up four earned in five innings of work, including a two-run homer to the recently exploding Nolan Jones. Star prospect and 2023 first rounder Chase Dollander had his best start in his young career, throwing seven really solid innings and allowing only two runs. Justin Lawrence and Jalen Beeks shut the door for the Rockies in a 5-2 win. Acuna picked up two more hits while Travis d'Arnuad supplied the power with a homer in a bad offensive performance.

The Braves would avoid a sweep despite another Iglesias blown save and a five run-five inning outing from Charlie Morton. They did it with good performances outside of Iglesias in the bullpen and 12 hits and seven runs out of the offense. Austin Riley and Marcell Ozuna provided a homer each, while Acuna picked up two more hits, including a two-RBI double, and three hits from Matt Olson. The Braves would win the game in the 11th inning from a David Fletcher RBI single by a score of 7-6.

Up next for Atlanta, who has lost two straight series for the second time in three weeks, is a series at San Francisco to play the 55-65 Giants. The Braves are now at 82-37 and looking to get back on track after a rough week that only saw them win two of their last seven games.

Orioles Defeat Mariners 2-1 Complete Sweep

Adley Rutschman (12th) and Anthony Santander (24th) each hit solo home runs in the first inning and that's all the Orioles would need as they defeated the Mariners 2-1 on the 4th of July. The win gave the Orioles a 3 game sweep of the host Mariners. Cole Irvin improved his record to 6-5 while Bryce Miller dropped to 4-9. Felix Bautista earned his 22nd save of the season. Santander would finish 3 for 5 on the day.

This was the 4th win in a row for the Orioles who are off to a hot start in July after a tumultuous June. They now sit at 52-36 and have closed the gap with the Tampa Bay Rays to just 1.5 games.

The Orioles next travel to the West Coast to take on the Oakland Athletics (32-57) for a 3 game weekend series.

The rockies are a fun team. good defense and arms in the OF, and a few bats that make some noise.

Game 3 of the opening series verse the Diamondbacks, it was once again Kike Hernandez who came up clutch. Down 3-1 in the 7th, he drew a walk and was on base and came in for the tying run on a left-centre line drive by Blackmon.

And then in the 9th none on, two out down two strikes Hernandez got hold of a sinker that stayed in the zone and he tattooed it over the deep left centre wall for a 4-3 lead that we would hang onto despite loading the bases in the 9th.

The final game of the series is tomorrow with two lefties on the mound, Eduardo Rodriguez and Austin Gomber, as the Rockies vie for a sweep.

          2024 Oakland Athletics 05/10-05/12

          Overall Record:17-25 (5th AL West/9.0 behind Rangers)

          Game Results

          Game 1
          Mariners-4
          Atheltics-1

          Game 2
          Athletics-3
          Mariners-2

          Game 3
          Mariners-8
          Athletics-4

Athletics lose series to Mariners to fall further below .500

The Athletics came into May hoping to get back to .500 but its really seeming like that isn't going to be possible. Oakland lost yet another series as they started their road trip by losing two of three to the Seattle Mariners.

Hogan Harris is the A's fifth starter but has been their best early in 2024. Game one saw him face off with Seattle's Bryce Miller. The A's were able to get to Miller first when Miguel Andujar hit his fifth homerun of the season in the 3rd inning to give Oakland the early 1-0 lead. They didn't get to him...at all again however as he finished after seven innings allowing just that one hit and one run.

The Mariners got to Harris in the fourth but managed just one run. The Mariners later scored the winning runs in the eighth inning when Luke Raley took the recently acquired 44 year old, Rich Hill deep for a three run shot that gave the Mariners the eventual game winning lead of 4-1.

Game two saw both teams struggle as no runs were scored until extra innings. The Athletics started that scoring when Matt Chapman hit his second HR of the year to bring in himself and the ghost runner as the Athletics took the 2-0 lead. The Mariners matched that however but Miguel Andujar knocked in another in the 11th as the A's took their lone win of the series, 3-2 in 11.

The Mariners rocked Alex Wood in the first inning of game three in the tune of five runs off of six hits. The Athletics made an attempt at a comeback and at one point brought the game closer at 5-4. That was until Seattle again pulled away and eventually won by the score of 8-4.

Things don't get any easier for Oakland as they now travel to Houston to face off against the third place Astros (24-16)

The Royals are off to a good start after the first month of the year. 18-13 with a 1.5-game lead over the Tigers, and half a game behind the Angels for the best record in the AL. We took the opening series in Detroit winning 2 out of 3 then split the 2-game series in Cincy. We won our first home series against the White Sox winning 2 of 3 including a walk-off in the 9th of our home opener. We finished up the first homestand taking 2 of 3 again this time from the Rockies before heading off to Cleveland and winning the series taking 3 out of 4. We lost our first series losing 2 of 3 on the road to the Blue Jays before returning home and facing the Guardians again, this time coming out of it with a 3-game sweep. We hit a bit of a wall as the Twins came to town losing 3 of 4. Picked up another 2-1 series win down in Houston and then headed up to Minnesota for our 2nd rematch of the month with the same outcome as before losing the series 2 to 1.

            Schedule
            Spoiler

The offense is off to a slow start so far. As a team, we are hitting .261/.308/.414, good for 10th, 24th, and 19th in the majors (6th, 12th and 9th in the AL). The team decided to go ahead and release Drew Waters. Tyler Gentry is being recalled to take his place. Gentrey hit .322/.402/.622 with 6 HR, 18 RBI in AAA.

On the pitching side, while the rotation hasn't been quite as good as last year the bullpen has been even better. The team is 3rd in ERA at 3.35, 5th in HR Allowed with 34, 1st in walks allowed with 54, and 25th in Strikeouts with 215. Jake Brentz was optioned to AAA when Kris Bubic was called up to make his first start.

            Jake Brentz - 2.2 IP, 6.75 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 6.38 FIP.

            April Players of the Month
            Spoiler

May looks to be quite a bit harder than April. We play just 3 games (White Sox) against teams under .500. Only 11 games on the road so we should figure out exactly how good our team is going to be this year. If Seth Lugo keeps struggling he may end up being moved to the bullpen with Alec Marsh (2.19 ERA, 0.89WHIP) or Jonathan Bowlan (1.85 ERA, 1.38 WHIP) coming up from AAA to take his place. Velazquez also needs to step it up or could find himself down in AAA. Nick Loftin (.343/.385/.583, 6 HR) and MJ Melendez (.299/.375/.505, 4 HR) are candidates to replace him.

Braves Rebound in Series Win Against Giants

              August 12-15, 2024

The Braves entered this series with back-to-back series losses to under .500 teams, but took care of business in a four game set against another under .500 team in the Giants. The opener saw a tight 5-4 win that almost included a third Rasel Iglesias blown save in four days. Matt Olson, Marcell Ozuna, Jarred Kelenic, and Travis d'Arnaud all went deep. Bryce Elder put together a quality start with three earned runs in six innings. Dylan Lee and Chris Martin combined for two scoreless before Iglesias gave up a homer to Jorge Soler before closing out the 5-4 win.

Game two was all about Spencer Strider. After two rough starts, Strider flirted with perfection by getting the first 22 batters out. He would end up allowing two hits in a complete game shutout that featured 10 strikeouts. The offense was relatively quiet, picking up seven hits, but five of those went for extra bases as Adam Duvall hit two doubles while Michael Harris hit a triple in a 3-0 win.

The Braves would lose game three despite being up 3-0 heading into the eighth. After a spectacular first seven innings, Fried would allow two runs before exiting, but AJ Minter wasn't much better and allowed two runs on two hits before he was also pulled. Dylan Lee got the final out of the eighth inning, but the Braves were down 4-3 and couldn't recover. Ozzie Albies provided a two-run homer, while Fried's total stat line of 7.1 IP and two allowed was his best start of August.

The Braves would blast the Giants in the fourth game by a score of 7-1 to finish the series win. Ronald Acuna, Ozuna, and Albies all went deep, while Acuna totaled three hits and four RBI. Chris Sale was electric and gave up one run in seven innings on the mound to provide a fourth good quality start of the series for the Atlanta rotation.

The Braves now stand at 85-38 and could now be less than a few weeks from clinching a seventh straight NL East title in a division that has been really bad around them. Their next series is a three-game set in Los Angeles to play Mike Trout and the Angels.

Finished out the season and offseason last night! Note before I get into that, I thought the player movement was pretty realistic. Contracts, not so much but in terms of the amount of movement, trades, who moved etc., pretty solid. Kudos to SDS on that!

We finished the regular season 75-87. Post TDL it was all about giving the young guys playing time. Kjerstad was the best of my younger players downt the stretch, and actually finished 3rd in the ROY of the year voting. Another impressive player was Christian Scott, who came up and started 3 games in September and finished with a 2.08 ERA.

The exciting finish was seeing Lindor's final numbers. He was amazing from start to finish, finishing with 42 home runs, 110 RBI and an OPS of .923. Baty finished stronger, but still had a very disappointing season. Acuna and Gilbert overall were disappointing but had some high spots. Connor Norby as well was a very solid get in the Alonso trade and performed pretty solidly.

In the playoffs, the Braves defeated the Twins in 6 games to win the title. 0 surprise there

Going into the offseason, I planned to add some SP, thinking I needed 2 guys and could let Scott, Vasil, Festa (who I acquired last season) and the rest of them develop a bit more before giving them a shot in 25 and veyond. My first round pick (Conrad Robinsin) is a 68 OVR A potential and seems very prominsing as well. I also needed a 1B (Vientos just wasn't it) and some type of bat for the lineup, which I was open to position wise

The offseason ended up being a franchise changer. A lot of the guys dragged out through November with their negotiations. Yankees low balled Soto, and as well know, Uncle Stevie is an opportunistic investor. I jumped in on Soto and ended up signing him for 7 years/177 mil.

For the rotation, I targed Max Fried but he instantly signed back with Atlanta to help defend the title. I pivoted to making 3 year offers to Burnes and Bieber, figuring if I didn't get one I'd pivot to Buehler. Luckily, I didnt need to as Burnes accepted a 3 year, 45 MIL contract

For the other rotation spot, I dealt from my young player stockpile of middle IF and acquired Brady Singer from KC. I dealt Jett Williams, Jacob Reimer and Nick Morabito. I signed Singer to a 5 year/56 million dollar extension to lock down a spot going forward.

After fliriting with Alonso returning, I targed Christian Walker on a 2 year deal for 1B but after a long negotiation that spread into January, he resigned with Arizona. McNeil didn't really fit my team anymore at this point, so I shipped him to Seattle for Ty France to hold down 1B for hopefully eventually Clifford taking over in a year or two.

Finished up my offseason by signing Kahnle to a small 2 year deal, Theilbar to a 1 year deal and Alex Cobb to a 2 year deal with an option to compete for the final rotation spot. Some other notable minor league singings for us are: Jared Walsh, Trsitan Gray and Brent Suter, all who wil begin in AAA Syracuse

                  - Shane Bieber to Anaheim
                  - Max Kepler to Detroit

                  - Danny Jansen to the White Sox
                  - Zack Wheeler to Toronto on a huge 4 year deal
                  - Matt Chapman to SF (1 year later lol)
                  - Jordan Montgomery to LAD
                  - Santander and Josh Bell to Arizona to load out that lineup
                  - Adames to Miami

                  In terms of trades:

                  - Marlins acquired both McCullers and Tyler Wells for prospects to give them one of the best SP depth in the league
                  - Orioles acquired Taijuan Walker from Philadelphia to give their rotation a solid, reliable arm to help offset losing Burnes

Its wild how seasons can vary lol. On my original save file before it got corrupted Manny Machado was hitting over .330 with 30 HRS at the ALL STAR BREAK. On my new franchise I'm about 20 games in and he's hitting .157 with 1 HR. I'll have a full update soon about whats been going on.

Cardinals Sweep Giants to get back to .500

The Cardinals (39-39) swept the Giants over the weekend and have gotten themselves back to .500 on the season. They also have moved to within 3.5 games of the Brewers in the NL Central.

The Cardinals won on Thursday in Tribute to the Negro Leagues game thanks to a walk off homerun by Willson Contreras. The Cardinals got a solid pitching performance out of Sonny Gray, who got the no decision but went 6 innings allowing 1 run on 4 scattered hits and recorded 6 strikeouts.

After an off day Friday so both teams could travel back to St.Louis, the Cardinals bats went nuts on Saturday and Sunday with the Cardinals combining for 28 runs over the two days while the pitching staff gave up 5. Nolan Gorman found his stroke again this series as did Willson Contreras. The Cardinals are still concerned about Paul Goldschmidt who has watched his average dip below .200 as he continues to struggle since returning from the IL.

The Cardinals remain home to host the Braves for a 3 game series starting Monday. The Cardinals will then close out June with a 4 game homestand against the Reds.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Rough day for Harrison Bader vs the Giants. He gets hit twice and then in his next at bat they pitch out and he somehow tears his calf standing in the batters box and is out 2-3 months. I was planning on DFA'ing Starling Marte but now it looks like I'll probably keep him around. I'm most likely going to move Jeff McNeil to LF, Nimmo to CF and call up Brett Baty to replace Bader.

I've also DFA'd Omar Narvaez and traded for Chad Wallach to take over the backup catcher role. I needed someone that can hit lefties because I don't want to give Francisco Alvarez any off days against righties if possible since he hits them so well.

                          Orioles July 8th Update

                          Date: July 8th, 2024
Orioles Record: 55-36 (2nd AL East 0.5 GB)
                          L10: 9-1

                          Orioles Update:
The Orioles just completed a 3 game sweep of the Oakland A's, and they have now won 7 straight and 9 of their last 10. They also lead the Wild Card Standings. Things get a bit tougher as they host the Cubs next and the Yankees for a 3 game weekend series, before they go in to the All Star Break.

                          Orioles Notes:
                          • 3 Oriole players look to be locks to be starters in the All Star Game. Adley Rutschman, Gunnar Henderson and Anthony Santander all have significant leads at their respective positions in the vote.
                          • Rookie Jackson Holliday is having a strong rookie season. He's hitting .276 with 9 homers and 36 RBI. The Orioles have occasionally been using him in the leadoff spot and there's some talk this may end up being a permanent change.
                          • Orioles prospects Kyle Stowers (.291, 9HR, 32RBI), Heston Kjerstad (.284, 9HR, 33 RBI) and Connor Norby (.255, 7HR, 20RBI) are all making cases for being called up soon.
                          • Speaking of Prospects waiting on the wings OF Colton Cowser (.231, 6HR, 16RBI) and IF Jordan Westburg (.171, 1HR, 7RBI) maybe candidates to be sent down. While the Orioles remain high on both players they have struggled as of recently.

                            Atlanta Takes Series Against Angels

                            August 16-18, 2024

The Atlanta Braves put up a good performance in Los Angeles to win their second straight series. The opener was a weird one, as the Braves won 7-3 in a game where they couldn't really hit, but they could walk. Atlanta only picked up five hits, but walked seven time and four of those five hits were homers. Austn Riley's 45th was the biggest hit with a three-run shot in the top of the ninth. Matt Olson, Ozzie Albies, and Marcell Ozuna all went deep as well. The biggest moment of the game actually came from Chris Martin. After Charlie Morton only allowed one run in the first five inning, he left the game with one out and the bases loaded in the sixth. Martin got a strikeout from Micky Moniak and a groundout from Logan O'Hoppe to end the inning. Martin did give up a two-run homer the next inning, but Riley's homer gave them the lead they needed to finish with a win.

Ronald Acuna hit a homer and Travis d'Arnaud got an RBI single, but Bryce Elder did not have a good performance in the second game. Elder five runs in 4.1 IP, the biggest being a two-run shot from Taylor Ward in a game where the Braves didn't really hit and lost 5-2.

The third game featured a 9-2 win for Atlanta as they mashed four homers from Acuna, Riley, Olson, and Ozuna while Spencer Strider struck out nine batters in 7.2 innings while allowing two runs. Sean Murphy also produced a two-run double.

Up next, the 87-39 Braves have a three-game set at home against a Philadelphia Phillies team that has fallen apart and now sits at 53-71.

The rockies completed an unlikely sweep of the Diamondbacks in Arizona with a close 4-2 win.

Kyle Freeland went 7 innings, and got himself out of a number of jams, none more so than 2 out, 2 on, top of the 7th.

In a 3-2 game, pitching to Gurriel Jr, a tiring Freeland fell behind 2-0, left a changeup up in the zone and gurriel got a hold of it with perfect contact to deep centre, where Brenton Doyle chased down the ball at the wall and made what would be a game-saving catch.

The Rockies pen would close out the game and Hendriks earned his league leading 3rd save on the season.

Drew Romo continues to surprise, going 2-4 with 2 RBIs, but Kike Hernandez was player of the series batting .344 with 2 HR and 4 RBI's, and coming thru clutch a number of times.

Much of Arizona's woes was with leaving batters on base. They outhit Colorado in the series, and loaded the bases 3 times in the series but failed to score a run.

Next up, Colorado travel to Chicago to meet the unbeaten Cubs where Dokota Hudson meets Javier Assad.

Arizona travel to New York for a 3 game set verse the (2-1) Yankees

One common theme so far with the 2025 Toronto Blue Jays is that they have won two out of three in each of their first four series. Against the Astros, Tigers and Brewers, the Jays dropped the first game of those three series' before rebounding to win the final two. The most recent series against the Orioles in Baltimore reversed that trend a bit. While Toronto still won two out of three in that matchup, they won the first two this time around before dropping the third game. Corbin Burnes is looking every bit like the ace that he was advertised to be when the Jays signed him in the offseason, as he currently sports a 2-1 record with an ERA of 2.84. Felix Bautista has already appeared in six games out of the pen, but two of them were in non save scenarios. In the other four games, he is a perfect four for four in saving games, but again, it's very early. Rookie David Shearer is off to a solid start so far, batting .250 in 36 at bats. Also among the early season standouts is Willy Adames, who is currently batting .340 and has already swatted 5 homers. Alonso is hitting even better, to the tune of a .362 clip and leads the team in homers and RBIs with 7 and 14 respectively. Juan Soto has also been raking, hitting four homers and driving in 13 runs. Danny Jansen has also been chipping in with three homers and seven RBIs and a .450 average in 20 at bats. This is a much better start than last season, when he was slow out of the gate. This year seems to be Daulton Varsho's turn to be slow out of the gate, as he has tallied just three hits in 31 at bats. He will need to pick it up sooner rather than later, or he might find himself benched in favor of Mickey Moniak, who has hit .263 in 23 at bats so far. But Varsho isn't the only one struggling out of the blocks. Kevin Gausman has compiled a 6.75 ERA in 16 innings, and his most recent start against the Orioles went completely south on him in the 5th inning, which also doesn't help. Fellow starter Alek Manoah isn't faring much better, having compiled a 10.38 ERA in just two outings thus far. In the bullpen, Genesis Cabrera has only pitched 3 and a third innings, but his ERA is also off to a bad start at 7.36. These are pitchers who will certainly need to step up their games and contribute more positively or changes may have to be made. Chris Bassitt, meanwhile, is off to a very good start, as is Paul Skenes. Both pitchers are currently 2-0, but Skenes has a slightly better ERA right now at 1.32, while Bassitt is just six points higher at 1.38. Those two have certainly been very good in the rotation so far this season, but as I have said, it's early. Speaking of Bassitt, he gets the start in the first game of Toronto's interleague matchup with the Reds. Manoah follows in game two and Skenes in game three. The Reds will be sending Jordan Montgomery to the mound in game one, followed by Andrew Abbott and Brandon Williamson. Should be an exciting series of games between these two clubs.

(I should point out that my Switch OLED, which is what I'm using for my Jays save, suffered some minor damage earlier this week as the right Joy Con on it suffered a bit of a crack in its' top left corner. Thankfully, it still works)
