The Cardinals (42-55) dropped their 3 game weekend series with the Braves to end the unofficial 1st half of the season. The Cardinals will enter the All-Star break 10 games back of the Cubs in the division and 10.5 games back of the wildcard.
Michael McGreevy, Sonny Gray, and Erick Fedde (possibly last start for the Cards) all pitched well in their respective starts. The issue was the hitting was atrocious especially the first two games scoring no runs with a combined hit total in those 2 games of just 5 hits.
On Sunday the bats weren't much better but Erick Fedde was dominant throwing 7 scoreless innings with just 4 hits against him. He left with the Cardinals up 2-0. Andre Pallante would give up a run in the 8th when Marcell Ozuna drove in a run to make it 2-1. In the 9th, Ryan Helsley would blow the save after Ronald Acuna Jr took him deep with 2 outs to tie the game at 2. The Cardinals would walk it off in the 10th when Matt Koperniack singled up the middle scoring Jose Fermin for the win.
The series loss only further confirms the Cardinals will be sellers this month which we've already seen start taking place with the trade of Harrison Bader to the Rangers. The Cardinals are expected to also move Erick Fedde and Nick Anderson. And its not out of the realm of possibility that the Cards move other pieces, even though controllable, like a Jose Fermin, Cesar Prieto, and even Willson Contreras.
The Cardinals will head in the break hoping that maybe they can find a way to turn things around, but given how the first nearly 100 games went, it's not likely.
Cardinals will start the 2nd half of the season in Arizona with a 3 game weekend series with the Diamondbacks.
The Cardinals will have 2 representatives in this years All Star game at Truist Park in Atlanta. RHP Ryan Helsley and 3B Nolan Arenado were both selected to mid-summer classic. Helsley is 5th in the NL with 25 saves while Arenado is hitting .281 with 10 homeruns and 43 RBIs.
Kyle Schwarber defeated Shohei Ohtani to win the 2025 Homerun Derby at Truist Park in Atlanta. Schwarber finished with 17 homeruns in the final round while Ohtani only managed 14.
The National League defeated the American League 4-3 in the All-Star game. Rafael Devers got the scoring started with a solo homerun in the 2nd inning off of Yu Darvish. The NL would tie the game in the bottom of the 3rd when Kyle Schwarber got a 2 out RBI single. In the 5th inning hometown hero Austin Riley would blast a two run homerun to put the National League up 3-1.
The American League would get back in it when Anthony Santander hit a monster blast into left center field to make it 3-2. In the 8th, Riley Greene would double home a run to tie the game at 3. The NL would then go right back ahead in the bottom of the 8th when Matt McClain drove home Elly de la Cruz to make it 4-3. Raisel Iglesias would close the door with a perfect 9th to end the game.
The Cardinals will have 3 representatives in the 2025 Future's Game.
RHP Zack Showalter (AAA)
RHP Branelli Franco (AA)
LHP Brycen Mautz (AAA)
Good look for the future of the Cardinals pitching staff to have 3 players invited to the Futures Game.
