Re: Official MLB 11 The Show - Impressions Thread

Just want to give a HUGE thanks to DirtyJerz and other dedicated gamers in the baseball world. Yall saved me from making my annual mistake at literally the last minute at gamestop. Year after year I fall for the "other" hype and this year, I had the game, walked out of the store, stopped...decided enough is enough and jumped on the Show bus and thank goodness I did! I mean man it was like saying bye to one of "those" ex girlfirends who just know how to press them buttons but say they want to do better! LOL To the game....

This game is absolutley wonderful. I am not even gonna try to summon my adjective skills in describing this game. It doesnt need it. I am gonna post full impressions later but I played one game thus far plus the challenge of the week and I am floored on the product his year. By GOD russell yall finally did it. I said give me limbs and analog control and I would never play another baseball game and you did and now I wont. (aside from my small moment of flirtations with...well you know..."that" girl) Anyhew...my first game was with the Nats (me) vs Cubs Strasburg vs Garza. Strasburg is a dirty bird fellas. That slurve is crazy nasty. About time soriano's stance looks good too!!! I adjusted the hittin camera to basically catcher 5 with some of my touches to it. (zoom) One play that floored me and most of all has me thanking yall for making this masterpeice of a game. It will be described below:

Ian Desmond hit a line shot in LF, Soriano closed in and misread it and tried to stop but it was raining and he kinda slipped and the ball sailed behind him. Great play! That is def something I could see soriano doing and it adds to the realism that your playing a human and not jsut captain automatic on defense. Funny thing is Ivan Rodriguez screamed a liner that soriano ahd to attempt to dive for and soriano JUST missed it and ran by him. I literally held my breathe in aticipation of what was to come. As soon as it fell I was like "Go IVAN, YOU FAT @SS RUN!!!" LMAO Good times.

My first Homerun was with danny espinosa the rookie 2B. (go figure, werth and zimmerman went AWOL) and I lost. I also played the challenge of the week and those look like to be a blast in a half. I had fun and liked the pressure it puts on you when you HAVE to perform. Sweet touches. I could only muster 45000 points but give me more practice and this is something I might actually purchase more tries to win. A complete impressions will come later but as of now this game has redefined sports games for me.

I'm not at this level but I'm close. I think I'll be switching back to timing as well

I use timing and auto fielding with classic pitching. I like to simplify the game and let my players dictate a good amount of the income.

I play baseball in real life, I don't need to use "stick skills" in the game!

I want preface my impressions by saying that I was someone who was getting tired of the show and felt like the game was getting stale. I was seriously considering buying 2k instead because if nothing else it was different. With that beind said, I'm blown away by this game. For the first time in a long time can I really see and feel the difference in ability of the players in the field. Player attributes actually matter, speed, arm strength, ect. Much more than in the past. Seeing my base runners speed and ability in the base running window is an appreciated addition. Even though I'm not a huge fan of analog controls in general, these are implemented really well and it just may convert me from my button mashing preference. Graphics and options are second to none.

The only concern I have is the online stuff which I haven't tested yet other than trying to create an online league which I wasn't able to do because it said I need to be an online member for 14 days before I can commish which is really really dumb IMO.

I'm still having a tough time wrapping my head around the fact that on analog hitting I can do everything perfect and still miss because the PCI got moved in the wrong direction.

Re: Official MLB 11 The Show - Impressions Thread

Decided to pick it up tonight. The game is beautiful. Par for the course, really.

I dabbled around with the new analog controls in the batting and pitching practice and I love them so far. Will definitely be sticking with them. I haven't tweaked the difficulty yet, so we'll see where that lands. Then I fired up an exhibition game and played an inning. Fielding with the analog is a nice touch, though I don't feel like the control I have over it is much different than when I mastered the timing using the buttons.

I don't really want to get much into playing actual games until the OS rosters come out. I'm really anal about having the right players, and it just doesn't feel right playing the Twins without Nishioka. I'm terrible at creating players, so I'll patiently wait.

I jumped right into RTTS, which is where I'll be spending most of my time early on. Started up a 2B and got drafted by the Dodgers organization. I'm loving the new scoring system so far. Finally, I'm not punished for having a 7-pitch battle followed by a line-out.

Another A+ effort by the SCEA team. Bravo.

You can get the timing down if you go to BP and lower the level to Veteran. I took practice as Cubs Castro and did each mode 3x. My first game I lost 4-2 but had more hits (several contacts) and even a HR by Pena. I'm going to keep the hitting on Veteran (Fielding & Pitching is All Star) until I think I need to bump up the difficulty.

I don't understand how you could do this. Hall of fame is impossible to even hit balls hard. I can't even time them up no matter what I do

Just wanted to do a short writeup of what I feel might be the best training tool I've ever seen in a baseball game - Discipline Hitting Practice. And this isn't limited to RttS - you can access it right from the main menu.

It goes like this: You get 20 "Chances" at the plate. The pitcher you selected for the practice will use his entire repertoire of pitches, throwing both balls and strikes in random locations. Depending on what you do at the plate, that number will either decrease or stay the same. This is what happens depending on what you do:

                            Strike Taken: Failure (-1 Chance)
                            Ball Taken: Retry
                            Ball/Strike Missed: Failure (-1 Chance)
                            Ball Fouled: Failure (-1 Chance)
Strike Fouled (usually foul tips): Failure (-1 Chance)
Strike Fouled (any other kind of foul): Retry
Ball Hit Fair: Failure (-1 Chance)
Strike Hit Fair: Success (-1 Chance, 1 point)

So, with the way this works you can potentially score 20 points in one session. Never more than that, because retries don't give you a point.

Obviously, with only one way to have a successful swing, you've got a lot of things going against you. But that's what makes this so useful - you HAVE to have a good eye or you will bomb at this game - HARD. The CPU will throw a bunch of pitches outside of the zone and it is your responsibility to lay off them and pick out the strikes. It's useful no matter what kind of hitting system or difficulty you use - the ability to see the ball and identify ball or strike doesn't change with hitting interface or difficulty.

So simple, and yet so effective - I love this this practice game.

Wow. My first game on all star, all analog, default settings, with guess pitch was unbelievable. I didn't think I'd ever learn to hit with the analog stick after the demo, but the batting practice modes helped alot to figure out the stride times. Also, so does putting the PCI on, since you see direct feedback if you have a bad stride.

My first game was awesome. A 5-4 win for my Giants over the Dodgers. Each team hit 2 HRs and 9 hits each. Bumgarner went 7 2/3 with 4 K's. I got in a jam in the 8th, but Sergio Romo came in for a strike out to get me out of it, ending the inning with his signature gigantic hooking slider that the Show just nails the portrayal of. Then Brian Wilson dominated the ninth. It was a close game, back and forth all game. I felt nervous during the game, just like I do when watching a Giants game in real life. Amazing atmosphere.

I didn't think I'd ever come around to the analog controls after how bad I was doing with the demo. I'm hoping this game wasn't a fluke.

Got a chance to play one game before I had to return to homework. I was the brewers at home against the Astros and ended up losing 4-3 but it was a fun game. Graphics are just sick and game feels so smooth. I thought I had fielding figured out but i committed 4 errors in the game. I dropped fielding down to veteran mid game but still made another later. I guess I still need to work on it. Hopefully I will get some more time to play tomorrow and improve on the fielding
