What you deem a crutch.......

We call a discipline rating....like in real life having great hands and being able to check your swing, vs someone who does not have great discipline and has weaker hands and can’t hold up as easily.

I know you and I are far apart on then direction this game took. But even the removal of that rating grinds my gears.

They caved to competitive play that wanted check swings purely based on user input....turfing a key hitting rating.

Enjoy 21....but that was no crutch. It was realism and player differentiation.

So what will be next as we move along in the PS5 cycle?

Here is to hoping some real good things are brought back (jeez we are at this point with The Show now hoping for features to be brought back now) for future iterations, and the game takes a bigger leap as the cycle moves on.

I am sure it plays a great game of baseball. They always deliver on that front. I am just really disappointed some key features were removed that were incredibly important to some of us.



Bacon is recreating the wheel and when his 93 man roster drops.....and I have no clue when that will be....I would consider picking this up just for that roster and to see how the new gameplay is. But the check swings.....grrrrrrrrr hate that change already.

Man, you seem to realllllllly hate everything about The Show 21 without even playing the game. Give it a shot and maybe you'll love it.

Actually I am sure the gameplay is great.

But I am having far too much fun with a fully featured MLB 20 which has gameplay as good. Maybe not better. But more than good enough for me. And all my roster content and SOTS are there.

I don’t want to clutter Josh’s thread up.

But my points are valid.

Sorry Armor, I usually always agree with ya, but thank God the check swing is not random anymore. Yeah, discipline rating should matter, but the way it was before was not ideal either, it was just more random than not (even with accounting for discipline, thus why I will agree with Josh it was like a crutch, even when you messed up). At least now it is my fault if I swing at it. Hopefully they will find a happy medium. I have been pretty damn happy with the change this year. Also gameplay on 21 is definitely better than 20 (it is just so polished this year, fielding is a big upgrade, and new pitching mechanic is a game changer), hard to believe with a game of this caliber, I know. But yeah, feature set could sway someone to stick with 20.

All 21 needs is to bring back Y2Y saves and once again this game become golden. That’s the only change I don’t like. The check swing thing doesn’t bother me much because like you said, it was so random last year that I felt it had no meaning if you pulled back on time or not.

That is good to hear.

I never doubt SDS when it comes to gameplay improvements.

I just want to know what I am getting into in terms of Y2Y and roster importing returning before even considering getting invested in 21. That really is the bottom line.

Do I agree in removing the impact of the discipline rating for check swings? Absolutely not and you darn well know that.

Having played the game now, if I had the choice between last year's system for check swings or this year's system. I'll take this year's system every day and twice on Sundays.

They bring back a middle ground sort of mechanic, I'd be fine with that. But until then....I'm completely satisfied with what is currently in the game.

Are you playing at all on default all star or did you jump right into the game with your sliders from last year. The reason I ask is because default all star is playing a great game of baseball for me right now.

I'm currently running on 100% default All Star.

And honestly....it's really good.

It's the best-tuned out-of-the-box of this series I've ever played. I'm using my Reds in a franchise (which I may or may not stick with) and it has been a series of tough games. All really low scoring so far (only 7 games though); which is incredibly refreshing. I'm going to fire up a second chise using a significantly better team and see how that stacks up.

Do I think we'll stick with default all year? No, probably not. But until my own personal performance levels improve (hitting-wise), I am not going to upset the game's balance with sliders. I'm going to need some time in practice mode; something I never would've said last year.

The only areas I'm really monitoring right now are stamina and injuries....both items that take sample size galore.

The only things I’ve noticed so far is outfield run speed and base runner speed seem a little fast. Have you noticed that at all? The cpu hit a ball down the line against me, my outfield was in a shift, so my LF (50 speed) was playing almost in center. He ended up beating the ball to the wall, it was not realistic at all IMO.

This has been the same ongoing issue for as long as I can remember with the Show. Outfielder speed has always been too OP

It can happen on occasion, but by lowering fielder speed, you increase the speed of the ball, which leads to too much offense. Did that rabbit hole for a little last year....and just....ugh.

Played a exhibition game with the Cubs and Sox. Had a walk off sac fly in the bottom of the 10th inning by Pederson and won 1-0. It was pretty cool. The announcers even got excited for it. Pederson even did a little bat flip cause he knew that would win it.

Some notes that I noticed.

It was nice to see the mob go to first base and get Pederson. Pederson tried to run away from it. I don’t remember seeing that in 20. I just remember them always mobbing home plate.

I love the birds flying in the outfield. Wrigley Field had a lot of them.

Giolitto and Hendricks had a pitchers duel. Only 2 hits each team. Was playing on All Star default.

What is happening Josh? It's been quite awhile. I am super stoked to see you working on sliders for 21 already. I've always been a XBox guy so when The Show released each year it never mattered much to me being a Sony exclusive. It's been years since I've played (back when I had a PS3).


With it being on XBox finally I am beyond excited to start up a franchise and roll with my Padres, maybe do some sort of player only one, I don't know just so many possibilities. I don't have nearly as much time to game as I used to however I am all in on helping test when you get something to work with. Thanks for all you do for the gaming community my friend.
