There is an option menu in season mode that allows you to change to any of the 5 levels for user/cpu hitting/pitching. When you start the mode you only have the option to select normal or rookie...I don't know if the other modes are unlockable or if there really is a reason to have the other modes since the options menu allows you to change difficulty. I could be wrong though.

Everything is in the options menus when you pause a game. After making changes (including difficulty), the game asks if you want to save. If you say YES, the changes stick the next time a game loads up.

The Normal or Rookie selection at the very start is more of a "quick start" vs. "advanced setup" thing, and doesn't have to do with difficulty. Going to normal is the only way you get to set up the expansion mode.

The difficulty is set somewhere else - the Season Start settings a few screens later. Go to options and you'll see the CPU difficulty options. They can all be set individually here (just like the pre-game options screen), but once you actually start the season they are grayed out, and you can only adjust the lock-on and a few other things.

Maybe you can only change those in the offseason, which is why I'm simming a season to find out.

No we're mostly on the same page here...whoever said you can't change the AI difficulty during a season appears to be correct. But you can change them beforehand, and right now I'm trying to sim a season to find out if it can also be changed in the offseason.

And, lemme tell ya....this is gonna take awhile. The game sims pretty slow (but I'm guessing there's a lot going on under the hood, given the insane amount of detail in this game)

No, no no...Bcruise is right. Once you set it initially it cannot be changed. I was up until 3 am last night and I completely forgot that once the season started certain options were grayed out. :o

Alright, that took forever...but you CAN change the individual difficulty settings when Spring Training starts in February (not the games, I mean players reporting and getting in shape, etc). The individual ones ARE locked during the season, though.

So like I assumed, you are saying difficulty (CPU Batting, Pitching, Fielding, Running) can be changed every offseason?

Kinda limiting really but at least it's in there. Still not the best of solutions.

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Just like Winning Eleven. Btw, I'm finding it way to easy to dominate the opposing hitters even on "expert" mode, very disappointing.

Two levels, All-Star and Powerful. Don't ask me why Expert comes before All Star.

To elaborate, try going up to Powerful level AI batting for one game, and get ready to kiss your ERA goodbye. I've seen it in watch mode, and it's a beast.

I've been afraid to go beyong expert mode for CPU pitching. My last game Oswalt struck me out like 17 times...I was using power swing on the first two strikes with pretty much everyone but my pitcher...lol
