Ok. I broke down and got the game. I played the game last year and wasn't too happy about the MOM last year with the dead-ball era scores and the high strike outs. Here is my quick impressions on this years game:

It seems like the strike out numbers are semi-fixed. What I'm noticing is that now YOUR pitchers who normally don't get high strike out totals don't get them. BUT it seems like your batters still strike out a lot AND it doesn't matter who your team is. For example, I was playing with the Modern Day All-stars(Stargel,McCovey,Morgan) and I struck out 13 times against the Tampa Bay Devilrays. The Devilrays? Yes, the Devilrays!

And I have seen some scores where the totals are all normal according to ratings but maybe I'm doing something wrong when my batter strike out too much.

I'm playing with Generated Pitch Count-Random. Is that the most realistic setting for everybody?

            Re: Manage only Mode Thread

Just played my first game with a 2-0 or 1-0 pitch count. I basically flipped a coin before each inning to decide which count to go with for that inning. I'm an incredible loser, I know.

Well anyway, had a blow-out with very little K's for either team. Had Freddie Garcia going for me against the Giants who threw Jerome Williams. Here is the final line.

            Giants 13 runs, 20 hits, no walks, 3 struck-out
            Green Sox 4 runs, 13 hits, 4 walks, 5 struck-out

Mailman, now Bonds, had a homer into the Bay. Edgardo Alfonzo had a inside the park home-run that rolled into the 420 alley after Phil Nevin tried to catch the ball on a dive and missed. I think the most unrealistic thing about the play was that Nevin didn't break himself, but I digress.

I saw some huge ramifications for having decreased the range of the outfielders as Jeffrey Hammonds played a pathetic center for SF. I managed a triple with several players including Freddie Garcia as Hammonds plodded all over the place after balls hit in the alleyway. I figure it serves the Giants right for playing Hammonds out there.

This was only one game with the alternating 2-0, 1-0 count, so I'll try some more. And I'll post the results.

I've been alternating the gen count and am very happy with the results.
First two innings...I go with random count. Then for innings 3,4 and 5 I go with generated count off. This usually assures me that if the pitcher is pitching well...he will at least go into the seventh. For innings six and seven I go back to random and then alternate off and gen from there on in(including extra innings)

Just finished a manage only game Mets vs. DRays in spring training. Glavine vs. Zambrano

Mets...3 Runs 11 hits no errors Glavine went 6 2/3(he was leading 3-1 and fell apart)
DRays..4 Runs 12 hits no errors Zambrano went 8 1/3( comp pulled him after Piazza hit a single to put men on first and third...one out...unfortunately....Miller shut me down to end the game)

One thing of note....in the 7th when the DRays were down by 2, one of the slower guys in the lineup hit a single...Crawford was up at bat next and the comp manager put in a faster pinch runner(I like to think not to clog up the basepaths for the speedy Crawford!) and it worked. The wound up scoring three runs to take the lead.

                        Re: Manage only Mode Thread

Alright, I played three more games with an alternating 2-0 and 1-0 pitch count... I won 1 of the game and lost twice.

Here were the lines... Game one at the BOB

                        Green Sox 1runs 7hits 0errors
                        D'Backs 13runs 20hits 0errors

I managed 3 walks against 7 Ks. My scrubby starter made it 5 rocky innings and then one of my more reliable middle relievers got bombed. His only bad outing so far this season.
The D'Backs managed 5 walks and only K'd 3 times.

Game 2 at Bithorn versus Montreal

                        Green Sox 3runs 8hits 0errors
                        Expos 2runs 9hits 1error

Juaquin Benoit lasted 6 strong innings (his stamina is rated a B- so this was huge). Mike MacDougal gave up 2 in the ninth and almost blew another save. I immediately traded him to the Mets after the game for Aaron Heilman, but I digress...
I had 5 walks in this game against 3 Ks and the Expos had 3 Ks and 3 walks.

Game 3 versus STL at Fischbach...

                        Cardinals 3runs 9hits 0errors
                        Green Sox 2runs 11hits 0errors

I can't seem to hit home-runs. I've played 12 games or so and only have the one by Burrell against Nomo. Well, anyway. My team lacks any semblence of clutch as you can see by the hit to run ratio.
The cards had 2 walks and 2 Ks. I had 4 walks and whiffed 7 times.
Freddie Garcia pitched 6 decent innings before I yanked him for a pinch-hitter.

Well, there it is. Again for all these games I flipped a coin before the inning and heads meant I went with 2-0 count and tails a 1-0 count. The idea was to get more power hitting situations but not many homers have resulted. Only 1 in 4 games, but other than that the stats are pretty on.

Any of you guys figure out a way to hit consistent homers?

Very much appreciate the input from you fellow manage only guys. I'll probably be getting the game in the mail tomorrow or Tuesday at the latest, and will be well armed to start with some great ideas based on what I've read in this thread. Keep em coming.

I rented MVP and enjoyed the gameplay, but don't see it as an option for me. I like realism and simulation and until a video game approaches the realism of OOTP, with graphics, I'll be dissatisfied with the products we have to choose from.
