I think it is important to clarify how one uses the two types of swings when assessing the results one gets. Some folks use the power swing nearly exclusively. Some use it with power hitters only. some use the contact swing exclusively.

I think there is merit to using just one kind of swing. The two swing types really confuses things. But in this case, the smaller window for contact when using the power swing makes it a good gamble when you are in a hitter's count. You can afford to whiff. Also, it is hard to produce a rally with no one in scoring position and two outs. I think there is a benefit to gambling and trying ti grab an easy run on a HR.

I haven't really had as much time as i would like with the game, as I went to Boston for PAX, and stayed the whole week. So I'm not sure how folks are using the sliders yet.
First page of my slider thread:

Here are some house rules I use for when to swing and what type of swing to use:
    - First of all, I usually take until strike 1. If you look at a lot of the high on base percentage MLBers, they do this too. I did it when I played baseball. I do it when I play baseball video games.
    - 0-0 and 1-0 counts I pre-load a power swing but will only swing if batters eye lights up and shows it to be a pitch down the middle. This is to jump on those pitchers who groove a first pitch fastball to get an early strike one. Other than that, I'm taking.
    - On 2-0, 3-0 and 3-1 counts I power swing freely, as in, if the pitch looks good I will power swing to crush it. No left stick influence. As a real batter does, I'm looking for a good pitch here, probably let something on the corners go by. May also let those big 12-6 curve balls go by because they are a pain to time and usually lead to pop ups.
    - On 0-2 and 1-2 counts I'm swinging defensively. Anything close I foul off trying to work the count to more of a hitters count to get a better pitch to hit. Need a good eye here to let the balls go by. I do end up taking some called third strikes here and there.
    - On "regular" or "even" counts I contact swing. This includes 0-1, 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, 3-2. Of course on the 2 strike counts I swing at anything that looks to be a strike. On a 1 strike count I'm a little more selective and might let a strike on the outside corner at the knees go by to wait on a better pitch to hit.
Should note I hit a contact swing home run with Alex Gonzalez (~ 70ish power) with 35/70 user hitting. Probably 9/10 of my home runs are hit with a power swing but they do happen with contact swings.

That sounds pretty good. In fact, I might take your advice of using the power swing with no strikes, too. But overall, it is a similar approach to what I take.

I like that hitting in this game can be done in a strategic manner in order to gain the biggest advantage. While I didn't have a house rule to take the first pitch, the opportunity to use the power swing on 2-0 and 3-1 sure encouraged me to be pretty darn selective on those first pitches.

Heh...must be a J. Bruce thing. Cuz that's who I was using when I gunned someone down at home.

is there a tutorial on how to use the power swing? this is my first baseball game since like 2k5 and i am not used to this. do you pull down on the right stick before the pitcher does his motion and then release up like you would in a contact hit? do you need to time it when you pull down and when you hit? i've played a few games and i still can't figure this out...

            Anyone struggling with pitching?

I can not place any pitches where I want them. I am using the cubs and mainly Matt garza. I put them where the catcher asks and even if I do the max pitching option it will 9 times outta 10 go nowhere close to where I pointed it.

Any help? Am I doing it wrong?? I love the sliders but it just seems I end up throwing a ball that gets slammed outta the park or I walk a guy in 4 pitches.

Maybe Matt garza sucks ?? Please help.

Are you using pinpoint or breaking pitching?

It's up to you. If you use breakpoint, follow the arrow. The ball should land where the arrow is.

If you use pinpoint, where you place the ball is where the ball should land. I personally use pinpoint

Re: BIGFNJOE96 mlb 2k11 Custom Legend Sliders

Just so you know, hitting MAX effort has only a small effect on location. Go into presentation options and set pitch analyzer to every pitch. Note what you are doing and try to adjust. It's not enough to just see it when you blow it. you need to see it when you are missing my several inches, too.

The game is not designed to let you just paint the corners. Subtle variations in your gesture will affect location. different pitchers will see different levels of variance. In addition, fatigue and composure will affect it during the game, too.

If you want 2K10 levels of accuracy, you are going to need to set the sliders to something closer to what you would find on rookie, or even easier.

But I repeat, MAX does NOT mean you nailed the gesture. You can have a MAX and a bad gesture on the same pitch. MAX effort just means the pitch will be more effective, and the batter will be more likely to miss or hit an easy to play ball. And that is more likely, not a sure thing.

Thanks guys. I'll just have to get better it sounds like. I don't mind the challenge. I just want to at least throw a few strikes.

I changed it to pinpoint and I feel a bit more in control. I'll turn on pitch analyzer and figure out what I'm doing wrong. Thanks again for all the help guys.

                        In a bit of a predicament . . .

...using the Braves, I'm about 7 games into my spring training, and I've gotten 10+ hits in all but 1 of them, but I'm also striking out about 10X/game. Seems I'm either getting base hits or striking out. I don't want to lower the USER CONTACT because I don't want to strike out anymore than I already am, but I don't want to be hitting close to .400 as a team.

                        Suggestions?

                        Sliders are great, btw.

                          I use pinpoint myself.

If you really want to frustrate yourself, go into the drills and try to pull of the control and velocity challenge. About the only pitch I can place are the cut fast balls (pitches with an up and then 90 degree to the left or right motion). Even straight fast balls are hard to place. And that was using Chris Carpenter, and then Roy Halladay.

While I had improved my gestures, it is clear I need to get the analyzer back on in order to practice some more. I go both ways. I really don't want to easily hit my spots. But I'd like to at least get a bronze in the pitching drill.

Jay, which pitching method do you think poses the most challenge? I haven't played 2k11 too much because of work, but I honestly didn't know they had a pinpoint method. Imma have to try this out tomorrow morning for sure.

Edit: I didn't realize you had a thread about this already. Sorry.

Joe - I'm striking out the cpu way too much. Last 4 games I've had between 11 and 15 k's per game. I'm afraid raising contact will make for too much cpu offense. Everything else has been great (hits, power, etc.) just too many K's. Suggestions?

The original set had CPU contact @ 40. You also may want to move User Pitch Break Influence to default 50. Give those a try.
