OBP is on base percentage. If you make outs on the bases, OBP goes down. Force outs don't figure.

Other factors also go into OBP:

    Hits+Walks+Hit By Pitch / At Bats+Walks+Hit By Pitch+Sac Flys
What about getting out on a sacrifice, reaching base on an error, reaching on a drop-third strike, reaching on fielder's choice, etc.? There are many factors.

And, I truly believe that getting caught stealing does not affect your on-base percentage. That's like saying your OBP lowers if you get out trying to stretch a double into a triple, which, by the way, is NOT one of your factors. So, I really don't know what to believe. My guess is that it's "If you don't reach first base safely during your at bat, your OBP lowers. If you reach first base safely during your at bat, your OBP raises."

Now I'm very interested to know if your OBP actually does go down if you get thrown out stealing. I've never heard of that before. Can anybody clear this up for sure??

You're right Blzer. Getting caught stealing has no effect on OBP. OBP a measure of how often a batter gets to first base for any reason other than a fielding error or a fielder's choice. As was stated earlier:

          (H + BB + HBP)/(AB + BB + SF + HBP)

It's also possible for a player's on base percentage to be lower than his batting average (H/AB). If a player had 2 hits and 5 at bats with a sacrifice fly, his batting average would be .400 but his on base percentage would be .333.

Well if that's not right, then my coach lied to me.

Oh well, I still believe it.

I guess you could believe it if you wanted, but it'd be wrong.

Your formula is right, but the logic behind it lowering with regards to total bases is wrong.

I understand you believe it, but look at it like this. Using the formula, explain to me how bases figure into it. When you can do that; well, when you realize you can't; you will understand what we are saying.

I never thought of this scenario before, but obviously its possible. I stand corrected.
