Bernie Williams just doesn't have the stats of a HOF'er and the only thing making him borderline is his association with the Yankees.
Sheffield may get in but I think some of his numbers will be viewed with skepticism due to the era he's played in.
I do agree that Jeter and A-Rod are locks right now.
Getting back on topic has anyone heard anything about Maddux. From seeing him walking off the field yesterday. Re: Official Trade Deadline Thread- Rumors, Transactions and Your Own Crazy Ideas
This is ridiculous.
Pat Gillick is a moron. You're trying to convince me that NO other team would take Abreu for more than the Phillies recieved? Or that Gillick couldn't negotiate a bigger return form the Yanks? It feels like a fantasy league where the bottom-feeder trades a big name to his friend for next-to-nothing.
How can you not love this trade as a Yanks fan? If the Sox were in the Yanks outfield position, I'd trade the kind of talent the Yanks traded in a heartbeat for Abreu. Isn't it last year he was the most 'underrated' player in baseball. The couple years prior to that, he was one of the best all-around players in the game. So he has homer struggles this year, he's still crusing doubles and walking better than most guys in the game. Lidle could get crushed in NY, but its just as likely that he'll be a solid 4 or 5 starter.
I'm not gonna say that this tilts the balance of power to the Yanks in the East, because the Sox are undoubtedly going to make a counter-trade, these two teams do it all the time. Even if Cashman didn't make this deal the Sox are still involved in a bunch of major rumors. Nonetheless, this does nothing but help the Yanks while neither hurting their present and probably not hurting their future.Comment

Re: Official Trade Deadline Thread- Rumors, Transactions and Your Own Crazy Ideas
Actually, I don't see the Red Sox making a big counter move to this. They will not move critical pieces to the future (any of the young arms and Pedroia, Ellsbury) for middling talent which is now available. Who's left, Soriano? They won't get him to play 2B. They will move the stud young trade chips for elite level young talent (a la Beckett), not for Jon Lieber or Kip Wells.
I predict Abreu is getting booed by Yankees fans by the end of September. He's Trot Nixon with speed this season, and as others have stated, he will not receive the boost from the short RF porch at Yankee Stadium because he played at the most home run friendly park in the majors. Abreu's arm should be nice, but in the little time I have watched Abreu play, his defense is really not a huge upgrade over whomever the Yankees have there now (Crosby?). Can Phillies fans elaborate on how he is defensively in terms of range and routes to balls?
The one thing I think of when I hear Bobby Abreu is a defensive loafer who puts up nice fantasy baseball numbers. In addition, I believe Abreu had a poor reputation in Philadelphia as a player who chokes when it's nut cutting time. Am I incorrect with this reputation of his? Hmm...I wonder who else on the Yankees has a problem with that?
Furthermore, this muddies relations with Gary Sheffield, because you know that lunatic is not happy with this maneuver. Is it unrealistic to see him taking his sweet time coming back after what happened today? Essentially, the Yankees have traded for Sheffield's replacement while he is still on the team. I don't see how a bat$hit nutjob like Sheffield doesn't pull some clownery after being 'disrespected'..
To close, this is obviously a net positive move for the Yankees (having given up nothing except some more suitcases full of cash), but I don't think it makes them the clear cut favorite to win the World Series by any means. There are better teams out there, and what many people continue to miss is that the Yankees still cannot throw the ball as well as said other teams. Cory Lidle is feces and will not even make the playoff roster (of course, he will help them win games vs. KC or the lesser clubs for the duration of 2006).Comment

Originally posted by BGarrett7How is this a case of the Yanks ruining baseball? Last time I checked, it took two teams to make a trade happen. If anything, you should be blaming the Phils for salary dumping. Philly is dangling two players who would fill rather big holes in the Yanks roster, plus, they have the necessary young talent to make the deal happen. What the hell are they supposed to do? Just shrug their shoulders, say "oh well, we don't need to win that bad" and just let Abreu fall to some other contender? Yeah, right. They are trying to win, just like every other team out there, why should they be blasted because they are trying to enhance their chances of doing so? If you had the resources to bolster your team for a run at the post-season, are you really going to sit there and tell me you would let a player like Abreu -- who has been one of the most productive players of this decade -- fall to the wayside?
I really want to know how the Yankees are supposedly the bad guys here. Why is it their fault that they have a $200M payroll, while teams like KC, Pittsburgh and Tampa sit around and twiddle their thumbs with their $50M payrolls? The Yankees get blasted because they actually spend the money, something that fans of the three aforementioned teams have been begging and pleading for their management and ownership to do for years now. That is a mighty dose of hypocrisy there. If you have the resources to do the things the Yanks do, you use them. Period. There isn't a salary cap in baseball, nor there is a proper revenue sharing plan in place. Why is this the fault of one team, and not the entire league as a whole? Everyone has been ripping the Yanks apart for years simply because they are working the system that is in place to their advantage. Big deal. Heaven forbid a team actually take advantage of the incompetency of the other MLB franchises.
Is what they have accomplished in the past fifteen years the model for consistency? Absolutely. Have other teams founds ways to win which counter their ways, and also had success? Definitely. Just because the A's, Reds, Padres, et al have been able to win without $200M payrolls does not make the Yankees way of winning any more or less tarnished. Each team is using their resources to the best of their ability to win. And until the MLB brass can actually come up with a legit revenue sharing plan which promotes a stronger sense of competitive balance, I am not going to knock the Yankees for winning in the manner that they do.
Thank you.
As a Yankee fan since before we were the financial powerhouses of the league... every other fan of other teams say we ruin the game and we are a disgrace to baseball...but we're not. We do what every other fan wishes their team would do, but are resentful of the Yanks bgecause their owner refuses to pony up the dough. The bad guy is the MLB which refuses to put in any financial system that would balance things out...so how is it wrong that we follow the rules to the fullest extent of our benefit? Should we not spend money while its entirely allowed just because other fans resent the Yankees for it?
The Twins owner (forgot his name) reportedly is the richest owner in the league... yet he refuses to spend any money. Steinbrenner loves the Yankees and loves to take pride in knowing he does his best to put the best possible team on the field every day and Yankee fans love him for it despite his personality.
Anyways I'm excited to see how this plays out and I hope Abreu makes the rest of the way a lot easier for us.

Just a minor quibble, because they still operate in a similar way to Steinbrenner, but I really don't think he's anything more than a figurehead at this point.Comment

I am inclined to believe Cashman is running the show as of now, or one of Steinbrenner's cronies like Gene Michael.

But hes still the guy writing the checks and he has imposed the policy around the organization that money is no object... thats all I was saying. Hus son in law who will be takihng over soon is most likely running the show now.

Now, I can see them trying to acquire a crappy "innings eater" just because Wells and Wakefield are shaky bets for the rest of the season. This wouldn't qualify as a big trade though, and wouldn't (or shouldn't, I should say) cause them to lose Bucholz, Pedroia, Murphy, Ellsbury, et al.
In short, the Boston Red Sox do not make reactionary moves based on what the Yankees are doing. Not surprisingly, this is what Steve Phillips was advocating on television today.
I dont see it like that at all. The chances of Sheffield being back at all this season arent too good from early and more recent reports. And this may actually help because if he comes back they could DH him for a while (unfortunately that would leave Giambi in the field) but at least Sheff wont have to risk getting hurt again in the field.Last edited by GBrushTWood; 07-30-2006, 06:54 PM.Comment

Re: Official Trade Deadline Thread- Rumors, Transactions and Your Own Crazy Ideas
I don't see why people are so worked up about this deal. The Phillies could not have gotten much for Abreu without paying part of his salary. They did well to trade him to the Yankees because now he's gone completely and not on the books. Their prospects may or may not pan out but if they wanted a better prospect (and this year, Abreu isn't worth a top flight prospect but a B level one at best) they'd be stuck paying for him.
And no, this deal doesn't make the Yankees an automatic favorite to win anything. Abreu did win a gold glove last year, but everytime I've watched him play he doesn't look good. Right field at Yankee Stadium will be able to hide him, but he isn't much of an upgrade defensively (his arm is definitly better than Bernie's). As for at the plate, there isn't a difference this year in hitting between Abreu and Williams. The only thing the Yankees are adding is more walks and a few more stolen bases. Yes they are better but only marginally. Lidle is a fifth starter that they're just hoping to get lucky with much like they did with Chacon and Small a year ago.Comment

Re: Official Trade Deadline Thread- Rumors, Transactions and Your Own Crazy Ideas
Wow...maybe the Astros deal isn't a terrible one like I thought it was. If I were Duke and Flanny, I'd jump on this. The following from the Baltimore Sun:
"Several industry sources confirmed the Orioles and Astros are negotiating dealing Tejada for third baseman Morgan Ensberg, shortstop Adam Everett and Oswalt, 28, who has already won 91 major-league games"Comment

Re: Official Trade Deadline Thread- Rumors, Transactions and Your Own Crazy Ideas
Oswalt too? If the Astros plan on making a run for the wildcard this year, they can't trade him. Beyond him and Clemens, their pitching hasn't been the greatest. Pettitte has had a down year, Wandy Rodriguez has been a surprise, and after that it's been a mix of guys like an injured Backe, Bucholz, etc. I can't see them including Oswalt. But, yeah, if I were the Orioles front-office and that offer was on the table, I'd take it.MLB: Cincinnati Reds
NFL: Cincinnati Bengals
NCAA Hoops: Xavier Musketeers
NCAA Football: Miami Hurricanes
NHL: Calgary Flames

I think the only thing that would be bad about that deal is having to see Adam Everett or Brandon Fahey starting at SS regularly.Comment
