At least Zito's not 40, since SF seems to be the safe-haven for over-the-hill veterans.

But a middle-of-the-rotation pitcher should not be making that money, welcome to the MLB.

Knowing that Zito received $18 million per year makes me nervous for what Johan will receive in 2 years when he hits the market.

This signing helps the Giants. It should help in what looks to be an interesting race in the West again. As a Mets fan I can agree with their thinking of not matching the Giants with that price. Still, our loss is your gain.

I would be pretty upset if was given a contract like that by the Mets. Terrible for baseball... just terrible.

If the Giants want a pitcher that's won an an average of 15 games per season and has a decreasing k/w ratio, and wants to pay $18 million for that, that's fine with me.

I wouldn't underestimate GM's, they are paid to look at stats beyond won/loss records, especially Beane.

Exactly. IMO Zito isn't that great of a pitcher anymore and I would be disappointed if my team signed him to this contract (and my team sucks)....certainly not worth what he's getting even if the market is inflated.

I still can't believe there are some debating wins as being a more important individual pitcher stat than WHIP or ERA+ or stats such as that. C'mon people!! Read some sabermetrics info or anything that discusses a players individual worth (in this instance, a pitchers worth). I thought this stuff was common baseball knowledge. Wins have always and will always be a terrible indication of a pitchers overall dominance or lackthereof. Yes in the end a W is all that matters to the team, but one has to look at a players individual performances before trying to see what they might do for a team (see my example of Player A and Player B in post 107).

I agree with the terrible for baseball statement. The owners/gms never learn from past mistakes. At least the money is not staying in the owners' pockets (well, except for Minnesota and now the Mets

--had to get that in).

Zito is not worth any more than $45 million in a seven year contract this day and age.

Though, while I don't agree with the salary he is being paid, IMO his value will not go overlooked. Having a lefty fly-ball pitcher is just great and dandy at AT&T Park. It is his road games and batting that I would be more worried about.

I just hope that he stays with the Giants these seven years though. This is the first long-term contract I've seen in a while with San Francisco, and I hope that he keeps playing here. Assuming that Alfonzo will be with the club for a while, it is always good for a pitcher and catcher to get along and be on the same terms for a while.

I am happy for the player. Not necessarily the contact, but the player. IMO we couldn't do much more with that money this year, except for maybe a closer (are there any in the free agent market?). If we are front-loading, that would be very awesome... but I doubt that we are. Anyway, the Giants have had an interesting off-season... and if there's a way that we can get rid of Feliz, I'd say that the off-season was a successful one.

i would laugh to no end if he turns out like the last few pitchers who signed some big deals: Mike Hampton, Kevin Brown....

it does sound a bit "Hampton-ish" when Zito says he would take winning a WS over money...
