    Re: Official Trade Deadline Thread

The Tigers have apparently been scouting Brian Fuentes too.

That brings the list of relief pitchers the Tigers have asked about to:

    Brad Lidge
    Chad Qualls
    Eric Gagne
    Akinori Otsuka
    Octavio Dotel
    Chad Cordero
    Brian Fuentes

    Did I miss any?

The Braves are apparently the front runners now to obtain Teixeira.

O'Brien made it seem like it was on the verge of happening in his latest.

Can't see us dealing all 3 of Salty, Elvis, and Jo-Jo...maybe some combo of one and other minor players.

Apparently JP Ricciardi has shot down the popular rumor of the Jays being interested in Jack Wilson from the Pirates. In fact, it seems he may just stand pat to see how the team does as a healthy unit.

Tex in Atlanta makes sense but trying to sign him to an extension is going to be hard.

Rumors are flying around that Adam Dunn is close to becoming a Cub. Saw it on BCB the other day and it said that Dunn is, "Ready to move to Chicago."

Makes no sense to me. Dunn would be horrible in RF with the sun, wind, and all of the other elements in RF at Wrigley. I'd much rather see Jermaine Dye if they're going to make a trade. I'm fine with Floyd out there for now and keeping the team as-is.

Anyways, take that for what it's worth.
Anymore word out of St. Louis, 'cause I can't get any information about such a trade. Would be great for the Rangers if they can shuttle him for some prospects with the likely trades of Texeira, Lofton, Gagne, ect. on the horizon.

Value-wise, that would look great for the Rangers but I can't imagine Tex gets dealt without getting an arm in return. And they already have a prospect at SS with Arias.

And that must be the shocker of the century, JP doing squat for another trade deadline.

But given our position (8.5? games out of WC) this team isn't going to be a buyer.

I know what you're saying but look what the Jays are suddenly doing now. They've basically won this afternoon's game which gives them a 5 game win streak. They're going to have series against the ChiSox and D-Rays. I know that realistically they don't have a shot but if they can have a long winning streak it might push JP to at least make a lateral move at worst and maybe a rental player for the RIGHT price.

I'm glad that Cashman has reiterated that Hughes and Jabba are untouchable. The last thing we need to do is get rid of our pitching prospects for another hitter.

If that's really what we're gonna give up to get Teixeira we had better get a pitcher back in return also. That's WAY too much to give up for just Teixeira alone.

I am a long time Reds fan and would love to offer some insight as to why Reds fans give Dunner so much grief. As someone else pointed out, the biggest issue is strike outs. He strikes out nearly 200 times a year. That is ridiculous. The thing about Dunn though is that he walks, which leads to a respectable OBP. But Dunn isn't a player a team wants just so he can walk a lot too. They expect a man like him to also be at the very least, adequate with runners in scoring position at which he is not. In fact, he is horrible at that also. Dunn is a Home Run or nothing guy. I have always liked Dunn and have always thought he had the potential to cut his k's down to about 150 a year (much more respectable) and hit in the .280 range. But year in and year out he has proven he isn't capable of learning to hit better.

But k's and RISP avg are not his only downfalls. He is a defensive liability in the field. He doesn't belong in the outfield. Maybe, and I mean maybe at 1B but better suited for DH.

Yes Dunn can hit 40 dingers a year. That does not make an All Star. Plus Home Runs (which is usually a solo shot for Dunn) are the most overrated stat in all of baseball. And to me, strike outs are the most underrated stat in baseball, contrary to a past post by someone else. If you strike out a lot that means you are not helping your team in even the slightest bit. If you can put the ball in play more, it may or may not equal a higher average but it does give your team a fighting chance of getting a hit, reach on error, even sacrifice fly (which Dunn went over a year plus without even having a sac fly), or just moving a runner over.

Bottom line is that Dunn does not help a "team" with the tools he brings to work everyday. I still have faith in Dunn and to be honest I am torn between wanting him traded and staying in Cincy. It is at least possible, to some extent, that a change for him in coaches, managers and a new city will rejuvenate (did I spell that right?) his plate thought process. He showed wonderful signs of changing in Spring Training and had mentioned he was trying to spray the ball more. But in the first game of the regular season he hit 2 hr's and that was the end of trying to spray the ball. The thing about Dunn is that he is so big that if he literally just tried to hit line drives instead of big uppercut swings, he could probably hit .280+ with 40+ hr's and maybe even 140+ rbi's.

Oh and to keep this on topic (barely), I have also heard rumors of Dunn going to Chicago. Also heard about possibly the Dodgers for Dunn as well although I am not sure who the potential is in the return in either scenario.
