I'm not sure I like that, honestly. I've watched that guy play lately and he looks older than Julio Franco. I dont know if he's hurt or what, but he's not moving well. I'd hate to acquire another Cliff Floyd.

I'm not REALLLL sure why the Cubs would aquire anyone else after dumping all that money on the offseason for the marginal results they've accrued so far. They could dump DeRosa who was a joke to sign as an everyday player anyway. In reality though, they've kinda made their bed and have to sleep in it now, and they're not going to make any moves to improve at the deadline without giving up someone like Pie.

Trade DeRosa??? What kind of sense does that make? He's been one of our most valuable/versatile players this year. He's hitting .284 with a .361 OBP and 50 ribbies, so yeah, they can go ahead and keep him. He's the last guy I'd wanna see them get rid of. One of our best signings, IMO.

The Sox might add a bullpen guy or maybe another outfielder and trade Pena, but that's the extent of the moves I can imagine them making. They'll prolly shuttle Pinero off too.
The Sox tried to trade Pineiro to Oakland for Bobby Kielty and the A's passed, Pineiro has already accepted a minor league assignment so unless the Sox trade him we will probably see him again in september.

If the Sox can acquire Kielty it opens the door for two trade scenerios involving Wily Mo Pena. One deal has Pena going to the Pirates for P Soloman Torres and the other deal has Pena going to Washington for P Chad Cordero, the Sox would also include a minor leaguer in each trade.

I don't expect to see the Sox make a serious push for Teixeira. The Rangers have asked for Kevin Youkilis in the trade and supposedly have asked for either John Lester or Kason Gabbard and a prospect, a price that Theo doesn't seem to want to pay.

One more note: the Sox have thrown their name into the mix for Devil Rays IF Ty Wigginton.

They paid him, and intended for him to be their starting second baseman. That's the reason the Rangers refused to match because they weren't going to give him regular at bats since there was a glut in the outfield and 2B at bats were going to go to Kinsler. If Chicago had signed him intending for him to be a utility superstar then they made an incredible signing, but if they signed him intendeding for him to be an every day second baseman, and now he's just back in his utility role, they overpaid and got lucky at the same time. I'm looking at the roster right now and the salaries boggle my mind. 5.6m for Jaque Jones? 4.5 for Bob Howry? Eyre for 4.0 mil. Bananas money for players like that....

I dont know how you can overpay and get lucky at the same time, but OK. DeRosa is fine with being the super utility guy and the club has had to make some moves during the season. We did get lucky in that DeRosa seems to be a team guy and understands that he's helping the team. I'm proud of the team for being able to adjust and plug guys into holes and still compete, and I think DeRosa is a key here, so I dont think his signing is/was a mistake at all. The guy has filled in everywhere.

Jones contract was a bargain last year with the year he had offensively. This year he's just not gotten it done, but he's been busting his butt lately, so thats nice to see. He's got a great attitude, although I still wish they would'nt have signed him in the first place, as he's not a big OBP guy and his strike zone has multiple zip codes.

I dont know about the relievers, as I'd have to check contracts for other relievers across the league. However, the bullpen before they signed them was attrocious, which is why they overpaid. Unfortunetly, when a team is lacking in an area, they will overpay to fix things.

but they use no fore thought to speak of. "We need another hitter in the outfield. Cliff Floyd used to hit. We'll pay him alot." Everything they do is a stopgap. "Barrett is being a jerk, let's trade him. Done. Crap, no catcher, let's trade for Jason Kendell who's done nothing this season. Score!" The Cubs and Athletics are paying 13m together to fund Jason Kendall. He's responded by gettting one hit in 5 games with the Cubbies. He can't hold baserunners either, which gives him addedvalue in the national league where basestealing is at a higher premium than in the AL. If I'm the Cubs I start unloading this older guys who aren't producing, starting with Jones. I bring up Pie and let him take his lumps. Look to deal Floyd in the offseason and probably give up on Prior and Wood ever being productive members of your team again. I just thinkg trading a bunch of prospects to try to "reload" for a playoff push and fill holes doesn't make any sense. I don't think they're in "sell" mode by any means, but more of a "standbye" and play with what you have.

Cubs getting Dye was a prediction by me but his name was linked to the Cubs on BBTN.

Tex is going to stay in Texas till the offseason or he is going to Atlanta. Rangers are still going to want Ellsbury and Bucholz from the Red Sox and what Atlanta is offering I think that will be the best offer they are going to get. Rangers got burned with trading Chris Young and Gonzalez to SD and Soriano for Wilkerson and I think they are not going let that happen again.

The Braves, major-league sources say, have made the Rangers a whopper of an offer for first baseman Mark Teixeira.

The Rangers evidently would receive three highly regarded young players — catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Class AA left-hander Matt Harrison and Class A shortstop Elvis Andrus — while sending the Braves only Teixeira.

I want Tex, but that's too much for a Boras client who's a free agent after '08.

That's a lot to give up for Tex. A LOT. Substitute Harrison for Davies or add CJ Wilson/Benoit and you have me considering it.

Seems Arizona might be interested in Dunn now too. He is a very hard person to deal though with his current contract. Should be interesting to see if anything can be worked out with anyone.

Well, the Rangers just aquired a young catcher from the Indians for Kenny Lofton. Wonder what that does to the Tex to the Braves for Salty et all possibility.

They can convert Salty to 1B or swing him around in another deal...you know someone else will want him.
