The Red Sox are discussing their options. It would seem that the most likely scenario would be for them to move Jonathan Papelbon into a setup role and grant Gagne the ninth inning.

      I'm not likeing that.
18-1 hell of a season regardless

        That's a...pretty interesting idea.

I'd prefer Okajima in the 7th, Gagne 8th and Papelbon 9th...but those three in any order is a great back-end.

It should be the other way around. Gagne should be the setup man.

I've heard that's the issue as well, that Gagne may void the deal if he's not the closer.

Yeah..I think Papelbon in the 9th would be better. That's still 3 pretty nice late inning guys to have.

Don't know anything about Beltre, but the Rangers need to unload Wilkerson, and he would be an improvement for the Red Sox as a 4th outfielder. He has plus speed, and can play all 3 outfield positions. Strikes out a ton, though he's hit lefties well this season. Pena is someone the Rangers might want since the Rangers lost their best power hitter in Teixeira, and don't have anyone else on the team really able to hit 30 a season unless Blalock comes back healthy next season. I included Benoit because he has some value as a long reliever or spot starter, and I think it would open a spot in the bullpen to move Loe there, then bring up one of the young guys for the rest of the season (Volquez, Rupe, or Hurley)

I don't think it really makes a difference where the 3 pitch. As long as the three put up 0s, only the fantasy owners will have reason to complain.

According to Gammons on BBTN, Beltre is 17, hitting .215 in the Gulf Coast League. Some say he's the next Griffey, but of course he's a big time project.

                        Makes a big difference.

Gagne may not waive it if he isn't the closer.

I had seen a rumor earlier about a possible White Sox deal with Atlanta for Garland.

Well apperenlty it was edited and now reads...

Meantime, the Red Sox and Gagne continue to talk about Gagne's role and, if Gagne is going to spend most of his time in Boston as a setup man. Gagne was due about $4 million in incentives based on games finished. That would be altered, based on appearances

Jonathan Papelbon is expected to continue as the closer, though Gagne will fill in occasionally.
18-1 hell of a season regardless

Looks like the Red Sox are compromising with Gagne by giving him all of the bonuses he may have earned.
