Sean Mcadam said last night that the Twins had backed off Kennedy and told the Yankees that if they were going to trade Hughes/Cabrera/and two other prospects (ny daily news state that the other two were Marquez and Hilligoss) the deal would be done. Cashman told them no. Cashman never wanted to trade Hughes. It was Hank that put up Hughes.

Trading Hughes would be a huge mistake for the Yankees and I'm (hopefully) glad they aren't going to do it.

Still doesn't even come close to the talent that's asked of the Boston Red Sox. I have a question, is Jacoby Ellsbury really that much better than Melky Cabrera? It's a genuine question. Can someone show me anything but an opinion to back up their claim? Not saying Cabrera is better or worse, but I don't think it's as black-and-white as I'm reading.

I agree i say keep both young pitchers. Yankees need to keep their salarys lower. Plus they get some young talent which we really need..

Lastest on Johan Santana via http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/

UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 8:30am: The Yankees could've had Santana for Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera, Jeff Marquez, and Mitch Hilligoss. Brian Cashman, however, never wanted to sacrifice Hughes for Santana and convinced his bosses that the Yankees couldn't afford him now that Andy Pettitte is in the fold. This near-trade won't be forgotten by Yankees fans, unless Hughes takes off in '08.

UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 9:56am: According to Keith Law via MetsBlog, the Twins have reached out to the Mets, Dodgers, and Angels to revisit Santana talks.

UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 10:54am: Peter Gammons via Amy Nelson is saying Santana may not be traded.

UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 11:26am: Joel Sherman describes Boston's two goals in the Santana Sweepstakes. He wonders whether the Sox and Twins could reach an accord on players and then the Red Sox wouldn't be able to agree with Santana on an extension. Meanwhile Gammons himself reiterates that he senses the Twins will hold onto Santana.

UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 12:21pm: The Red Sox and Twins are still engaged in talks. The Sox are still considering the Yankees a factor. And no, Ellsbury signing on with Boras doesn't change the Twins' opinion of him.

UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 12:43pm: Jon Heyman reports that the Mets are trying to work their way back into the mix. They're still viewed as a longshot without Jose Reyes in the offer, but at least the Twins are listening.

The numbers point toward Ellsbury hitting for a better average, have a much better OBP, possess superior speed and base stealing ability, and have similar XBH ability (minus a few HR). Scouting reports point to Ellsbury being a superior defender even with his average arm.

I haven't looked into their future projections, though I'm sure it would be much of the same.

Re: Don't be surprised if Johan Santana is a Yankee before the season gets underway.

It seems like nothing is changing from:

                - The Red Sox made two offers and are sticking. Maybe they'll throw in some mid-level prospect but whatever.
                - The Yankees are out for sure (99% out at least).
                - Other teams are unwilling to pay the price but still talking to the Twins over cocktails and hors d'oeuvres so all sides feel like they at least tried.
                - The Twins may or may not trade Santana depending on their level of comfort with the Sox's offer.

Every news report says a variation of that.

Can I just say again that Melky is nothing special? He has a kind cool name and is young and home grown so the Yankees fans seem to like him. He'll end up being a slower, worse fielding version of Coco Crisp with a little bit more power. Maybe he'll hit 15 HRs a couple times in his career, maybe. His name isn't nearly as cool as Sixto Lezcano though. Comps are fun!

Makes sense, but it's still early. Melky is a year younger, has more experience, and seems to strike out much less. I guess I will have to see one full season from Jacoby to be completely sold on him, but in the mean time how are their minor #s looking?

To the rest of us...you're preaching to the choir.

Hmmm....let's see.....Twins get miffed at Yanks/Sox "lowball" offers. Twins pull in other teams to get things going....even some new teams are "getting involved".....sounds a little familiar:wink:
Oh and this posturing by Cashman is classic negotiating b.s.(I shouldn't say b.s because it's actually kind of smart...but I hate the Yanks)
One guy(used to be Steinbrenner) in the front office dangles someone in the talks......someone else(GM) says..."nope can't do it he's gonna be the best someday, that's too much to ask"(in the hopes the other team gets a little disappointed at missing the next great thing) then the guy goes back in the talks and the other team thinks...this is our last chance and makes the deal.
