Re: Chipper Jones a HOF'er?
I remember Cal Ripken, Jr's ceremony was broadcasted live on ESPN I believe.
I remember that day, me, my mom and my grandma were all watching and my grandma says "Do they usually do something like this?"
I turned and told her "No, only the true, special players get this sort of recognition."
I remember back in the late '90's think Chipper was a great player, and back then never realized he would become one of the best 3B to ever play the game.
A lot of guys I watched play as I grew up in the '90's and early '00's ended up being HOFers or near HOFers that I never thought would. I never thought Biggio would get to 3,000 hits, never thought Thome would get over 600 homeruns.
And then guys that looked to be locks ended up not really coming "close". Juan Gonzalez was one example, Jeff Bagwell another.
Funny how things play out.7 National Championships
43 Conference Championships
152 All-Americans
5 Heisman Trophy Winners
#1 in weeks ranked #1 in AP Poll
#1 in weeks ranked top 5 in AP Poll
#1 in wins/winning percentage since 1946

I don't think these guys ever restructured their contracts. I agree with the rest."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Don't know about Jeter though..."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." - Rogers HornsbyComment

Yes. That newspaper posted that because he was bitching and crying, and not because they wanted to sell papers.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: Chipper Jones a HOF'er?
Why didn't he just sign for 3/45 then? That is clearly an overpayment for a guy his age, especially when he can't field his own position at even an average level.Comment

He wanted what he could get. He knew he could get more, so he kept trying to do so. Doesn't really matter either way, but that picture had nothing to do with whether or not he was bitching and crying, and everything to do with the fact that he is Derek Jeter and was a free agent.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: Chipper Jones a HOF'er?
As I've said before, at some point someone "clean" who's been elected to the HoF will later be found to have been doping, to much tweeting and hand-wringing. Once that happens, Bonds, Clemens, A-Rod, Manny, Pudge, Bagwell, and Piazza are going in. Probably McGwire and Sosa as well. Palmeiro doubtful, Juan Gone never.Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that. Re: Chipper Jones a HOF'er?
Funny how some players get stuck with 'roids rumours and some don't. I met both Bagwell and Jim Thome in 1999. If one was indeed on the juice at the time while the other was merely "country strong", you coulda fooled me.
