Re: Chipper Jones a HOF'er?
While I know Chipper has struggled this year, one of my favorite baseball writers had a good piece on him today:
I have watched Chipper his entire career and I am surprised to see him at the 300/400/500 mark. He truly is one the greats and I'm going to miss him when he hangs it up. In short, if he's not a first ballot HOF'r something's wrong."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." - Rogers HornsbyComment

Re: Chipper Jones a HOF'er?
Read some of the comments on this thread and I'm surprised people are against him being in the Hall of Fame. I always assumed he was a lock. He's won a batting title, an MVP, and is going to end his career with 450 homeruns more than likely. (I think he's going to have a big year next year). If he can hit two more homeruns in the next 5 games he's going to be the first player to hit 20 homers for 15 straight years I think.
I think what is hurting him here in this thread is playing in Atlanta. If he played in New York or Boston people would appreciate his accomplishments more. I've always thought he was to Atlanta what Derek Jeter was to the Yankees.
He's just been a great player, injuries have slowed him down the last few years but he still found a way to win a batting title last year.
He's one of the all time greats in my book.Comment

He's the 2nd best switch hitter of all time, behind Mickey Mantle, and ahead of Eddie Murray. There's no way he's not in.Comment

Yes."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Chipper Jones a HOF'er?
Bumped for greatness.
These are the seven players in MLB history who have at least 10,000 plate appearances and were able to keep their BA, OBP, and SLG above .300, .400, and .500, respectively:
Ruth, Musial, Thomas, Ott, and Chipper are the only players in MLB history to maintain those levels while hitting at least 400 career home runs.
Chipper's .934 career OPS is the highest for any player whose primary position was 3B. Looking at the SABR stats, Chipper has the highest career wOBA of any 3B, at .399 to Mike Schmidt's .395 . He also has the highest wRC for 3B (and 27th all-time) at 1893 to Brett's 1801. Chipper's wRC+ is 143, tied for 2nd all-time with Eddie Mathews and behind Schmidt's 146.
I don't believe it's quite understood how consistently good he's been all-around as a hitter.Last edited by Brandon13; 08-11-2012, 12:51 AM.Comment

Manny is so close to that list. All he needed was 226 plate appearances.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Serious question,
Is there a thread around here explaining different SABR stats and their uses? If not, there should be. I know about WAR, ERA+, and OPS+ but that's basically it. I'm sure there's a lot of others who could use the information as well. I guess I'll have to study fan graphs for a little whileOriginally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it
