        Re: Oliver Perez

Giants have out-homered the Padres 12:1 in 4 meetings already this year.

        That's just plain SAD.

Oh BTW, this team has hit only 2 HRs...both of them by a rookie.

I think it's very possible the entire TEAM could hit less than 100 HRs this season. No kidding around. Power outage.

                Re: Oliver Perez

I hope they try to get Nevin to waive his no-trade clause and trade him to an AL team so he can DH. At this point in his career, he has become injury prone and is not suited to play the outfield. With chronic shoulder problems I doubt he'll ever hit 40 bombs again. I'd love to ship him off and see what we could get in return. With the development of Nady, it can be done.

And no to Vlad, Tejada, et al. Blowing $15-$20 mil on ONE player won't help the Padres at all. And besides, we won't see that kind of increase in just the first year at the new park. I'm guessing we'll see a modest $5-$10 mil increase, all of which needs to be spent on the bullpen to get some top-notch guys, not some scrapheap fools we "hope" can pan out.

Nady-Kotsay-cheap FA as the outfield in 2004 should be fine. Load up on pitching...it's all that matters.

First off the guy was never suited for the outfield, injuries or not. Second, the guy played 128, 143 and 149 games in his first 3 years with the Pads until last year when he only played 107 because of his injury. This year was a fluke, he came down wrong and busted his shoulder. Please define chronic for me too. Barry's leg problems are chronic, Griff's hamstring problems are chronic. Nevin is 32 and in his prime. It's not like he is so old that recovering from an injury like this will be a huge problem, he'll be back and he'll have the pop. And as far as getting Vlad or Tejada, come on now, who wouldn't want either of those guys? They want a big ticket guy for the new yard, and they'll go out and get one. They add one of those guys and the payroll jumps to what, $45-50 million. You still have the cash to add a pitcher or two and still come in under or around $60 million, pretty cheap by today's standards if you ask me.

He's coming off 2 major shoulder injuries in consecutive years. He won't be the same, he belongs in the AL where he can DH. I'd love to unload him for pitching help if he agrees to waive his no-trade clause.

And about Vlad or Tejada, it's not a matter of not liking them, it's a matter of spending all that cash on one player. That just won't help the Padres that much. And like I said, I doubt the payroll will jump ~$25 million in one year. Whatever extra money they have next year is better spent on the bullpen and depth at several positions, and some extra should be set aside in case one of the young pitchers turns out to be a bust or needs more time in the minors.

Hayes, can you imagine having an MVP type player again? Tejada or Vlad would be amazing. I still think they will end up at one of the big market teams, that will pay them even more than they are worth.

I won't put anything past Towers, the guy is a witch as far as I'm concernred. Everybody freaked out when they started pulling apart that 1998 team, please tell me where all those guys are now. I think the only guy they blew it on was Finley, because he's had some productive years since he left. You are right though, I can see the Yankees making a push for Vlad and maybe he Dodgers going after Tejada, but I won't be surprised in the least if one of them ends up in PETCO. Guys have wanted to come to San Diego for years, but the team hasn't had the money to give them, the new park will change that.
