I'll say this in passing: Robbie Alomar better get in, regardless of the recent speculation.

Here's a name that I think is interesting: Barry Larkin. I think he's eligible for the first time in January. His overall numbers aren't as impressive as I would have expected, but the guy is one of the best SS to ever play. Thoughts on his chances to get in?

I just want to throw out my favorite childhood player to see what y'all say about him, so here goes:

          Frank Thomas

The reason why I wanted to play 1st Base in Little League. I know that he doesn't have eligibility for a while, but still wanting to hear your thoughts.

And yeah, I might put Larkin in.

Thomas should and will get in rather easily. Both Alomar and Larkin should and eventually will, but I'm unsure how many ballots it'll take. Alomar will probably reach the HoF first.

I think Larkin gets in first. He won an MVP and was the leader on a team that won the World Series. I think he gets in on the second ballot.

Alomar had a monster ALCS in '92 and his HR against Eckersley in Oakland changed the complexion of the series for the Jays as Eckersley was thought to be unhittable but the game tying HR in Game 4 brought the Jays back.

Also I think Alomar was hands down thought of as the best 2B of his generation so I think he will get in before Larkin.

Larkin gets in just for his glove alone. He would have had more gold gloves if it wasn't for Ozzie Smith.

All true, but Alomar has that nasty spitting incident, while Larkin was an ambassador for the game.

They're both first ballot guys for me. Just trying to predict what the BBWAA will do.

I don't really think of this when I remember Alomar but couple this along with the recent AIDS lawsuit and it makes things interesting. Again though, regardless of the issues he was a remarkable and revoluationary player.

Look at the amount of rewards he's gotten: 12x all-star, 2 WS rings, 10 GGs, 4 Silver Sluggers...I would be surprised if he's not a 1st-ballot.

True, but Sandberg had 10 consecutive All-Star appearances, 9 consecutive Gold Gloves, 7 Silver Sluggers, and was a model citizen, yet didn't make it in on the first ballot either.

**Sorry, this forum will not allow me to construct the table for easy reading...

                          >>>>>>>AVG HRs RBIs 2Bs 3Bs SBs OPS
                          Sandberg .285 282 1061 403 76 344 .795
                          Alomar .300 210 1134 504 80 474 .814

                          Now look at the fielding:

                          >>>>>>FLD% Chances Assists POs DPs
                          Sandberg .989 10279 6363 3807 1158
                          Alomar .984 11165 6525 4459 1408

                          Sandberg: 16 seasons
Alomar: 17 seasons (remember his last 2 were near washouts b/c of injury)

                            I don't follow.

If you want to see who was actually better, you have to adjust their stats to account for era and ballpark. When you do that, you see that Sandberg has a 114 OPS+ and Alomar's is 116. So they were identical at the plate.

If your point is that the BBWAA doesn't care about that, you're right, but Sandberg also his 72 more home runs than Alomar, which is a big deal to the BBWAA.

Same thing with the fielding stats. According to fielding metrics, Alomar was actually a lousy fielder throughout most of his career. Sandberg was much better.

Even according to those stats, Sandberg was better.

But none of that really matters. All I'm saying is that they're comparable, and Sandberg didn't get in on the first ballot even though he should have been a shoe-in.

I posted the numbers to both b/c I found it shocking how similar both players were in terms of stats...Alomar's fielding stats are skewed a bit b/c his DP partner a lot of years were GG winners themselves (Tony Fernandez, Omar). I personally think he was a better player, granted I was too young to recognize Sandberg and appreciate his accomplishments in the 80s....there was no other comparable 2B to Alomar in the 90s.

One thing of note is the number of winning teams Alomar was apart of compared to Sandberg; I understand that's a lot of times nothing a player can control but still noteworthy.
