We're giving up our top prospect, # 3, and # 6 according to BA, and that's from a good system.

I wish they took Josh Reddick, or even Lin, but Hoyer knows better.

good points...but the june draft is DEEP....and the sox will be loaded with picks

      Re: Welcome to Boston, Adrian...

This guy hit .400 with RISP last year, and only drived in 101.

With some good hitters around him, and in some nice places to hit, he will probably start driving in 125 routinely.

Ryan Howard is getting 25 million a year over 5 years, 125 total. He was 29.

Miguel Cabrera got 8 years, 153 million. About 19 a year. He was only 24 though.

Teixiera got 180 million over 8 years, about 23 a year. 29 years old

Gonzalez will turn 29 this year. I think he is a better player overall than Howard, and just as good if not better than Teixiera. I dont know if Boston wants to give him 6 years, but I'd think he would get around 130-135 million.

I'm completely aware. I wasn't really comparing it to the A-Rod situation...only using it as an easily recognizable example of "it's not final until it's final." Anythings possible until all aspects are covered.

I've been geared up for this deal for about a year and a half...lol...I'm not getting excited until it's finalized and he's signed.

And while I certainly feel for Padres fans, what exactly is the team supposed to do? They know they can't afford him, so they might as well get some value for him than lose him outright.

While I knew this was coming, it still pisses me off. Disappointed in what the is being reported the Pads got in return. When Jeff Moorad bought this team he promised to be raising payroll...this is going in the wrong direction.

          Ugh...

I wonder if this means Peter Gammons wont talk about the Tigers trading Cabrera to Boston, every single year. I'm they finally made a big trade because he wont have to talk so much. For 3 years its been "Dont be surprised to see Miguel, to see Teixeria, Insert star player here in a Red Sox uniform this season." It gets so old.

Yeah, moves like this is what makes the Red Sox the Red Sox and the Cubs, the Cubs.

Oh, but when they put their minor league prospects out there next year, theyll fully expect the fan base to be all into it.

He was not bought, it was a deep farm system that got him.

And why the hate? Who ever complained about the payroll here?

Sox just try and stay under the luxury tax threshold as much as they can, is all. Where the Yankees have no issue well exceeding it.

I am sorry though. Sox fan said finally a deal he can be happy about.

That is pretty lame. It's real rough having a team that has the ability to make just about any deal they want to.

Also please Red Sox fan, don't be condescending at act like the Padre fans should be greatful because they are getting 3 prospects from your farm system. They are losing the best player on the team, the most popular player on the team, and a local kid to boot.

This is just another reason why the financial inequities in baseball are making it harder and harder to be a fan, and why the game's popularity continues to decline.

I understand people being upset, but the guy never said it was "finally a deal he could be happy about." It was two separate sentences. I think far too much is being read into such a short comment.

I just took it as the deal is finally looking about done (remember, it's been "reportedly close" for over a year) and he's happy a bout it...lol. I don't think there was any lamenting going on.

I'll pretty much leave the rest alone, but I'll just say I think the game's popularity decline has far less to do with financial inequity and more to do with the game itself (not as easy to play pick-up games, pacing, etc).

he most certainly was bought. Prospects for a proven slugger who is going into an option year in 2011 and ready for a huge payroll increase is buying a player. No doubt about it, but i don't really see the big deal. For a long time now the Sox have been doing the same thing the Yankees have been doing for a century. It's what got the Sox their rings. It's part of the game.

It is a trade... no money is exchanged. He wasn't a free agent where they bid the highest.

But I get what you are saying. Sox have no choice but to play like the Yankees since they are in that division. It is the nature of the beast.

The Red Sox spend the money they spend because they can. The small market teams in the AL East don't spend much. The big market teams in other divisions spend a lot. It's not about the Yankees.
