    Re: TWINS

I'm glad Rogers won't be returning. I'd prefer to see the Twins sign Urbina and move Silva into the #4 spot in the rotation, with Durbin or Balfour battling for the #5 spot in the spring. Silva is too young and has too good an arm to be sent to middle relief or used as a set-up man. Rincon is a valuable swing man, and Fultz will be a 5th-6th inning releiver. The Twins are 1 key pitching move away form everything taking shape. If they sign a closer, you can expect Rincon or Silva to comptete for a starting job, and if they sign a starter you can expect Nathan to be the closer.

They still need to trade Jaque Jones, too.

      Re: TWINS

Everyone seems to have forgotten about Joe Mays, he will also compete for a spot in the rotation,
what will probably happen is the Twins will go with Mays, Brad Radke, Johan Santana, Kyle Lohse and one of the kids, either Balfour or Durbin, or even Adam Johnson or Sean Douglass, they are also bringing Peter Munro and Joe Roa to camp with them, they also may compete for starting jobs,
at this point it does not look like the Twins are going to sign a Closer, so some one from the bullpen will take over the role, the two most likely candidates are Juan Rincon and J.C. Romero, Joe Nathan and Carlos Silva have outside shots,
all in all the Twins don't have a bad staff.

A note to Ron Gardenhire: decide on a Closer in training camp, Closers by commitee never work, ask Grady Little.

                        Re: TWINS

Helling does nothing for me. After reading today's paper, it looks like the Twins are going to hang on to Jaque Jones, which means we have no money to sign a closer. Now we have about 7 outfielders competing for 5 jobs, but no proven closer and a suspect 4-5 spots in the rotation. Terry Ryan is the king of sitting on his hands.

It looks like the set starters this year are Radke, Santana and Lohse, and the other two will come from Silva, Helling, Balfour, Rincon, or Durbin. If a guy like Silva isn't tabbed as a starter, he'll still be on the big club as a long releiver. The closer will be Nathan, unless Jesse Crain blows people away in camp. Rincon or Silva will set-up from the right and Romero from the left.

Positionally we need a lot more from our bats this season. Players like Jones, Hunter, Koskie and Doug M. need to raise their production this year. All had disappointing seasons in 2003. Stewart needs to stay consistent and our middle infielders need to get on base and use their speed (for a change). Lecroy will be the everyday DH, and Cuddyer will get a lot of at bats subbing at 1B, 3B and OF. Defensively, we have one of the best infields in the game and speed in the OF. We have weak arms at the corner OF positions, though.

Things could be really good or really bad for the Twins this year. Management is counting on a lot of people to raise their games. If they don't, it's 4th place city.
