Re: MLB Off-Topic 2013
So, not MLB related... but baseball related.
That's Bryan Bullington (former first overall pick in 2002, Pirates) throwing at a batter who had called (and was granted) a timeout. He didn't hit him.
The best part of it? There's a video on YouTube of the at-bat, from someone sitting on the third baseline. It's just of the batter. Literally nothing happened after that. The ump, batter and game went on like he hadn't just gotten thrown at after calling a timeout. He struck out.Comment

Eric Wedge on why Dustin Ackley has struggled this year...
It's the new generation. It's all this sabermetrics stuff, for a lack of a better term, you know what I mean? People who haven't played since they were 9 years old think they have it figured out. It gets in these kids' heads.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Well, that's the most ridiculous baseball-related thing I've heard so far this year. It's going to be hard to top.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic 2013
Jack Maloof, Royals hitting coach:
"There is just no reward here (for us) to try and hit home runs," Maloof said. "We try to stay down on the ball, be more line-drive oriented, and do more situational hitting at least through the first two or three rounds (at home) here. That's why I'm not overly concerned because I think we'll lead the league in fewest home runs again this year. We don't have a 40-homer guy in the middle of the lineup.
"We've got kids. Billy Butler is a doubles machine. No one has told me he is a home run hitting guy. If we try to do it too much, we'll get ourselves in trouble. Same thing with Alex (Gordon). They'll hit home runs on the road, and yes, they'll hit some here. They have. But the risk for them to go out and hit a home run in one of 80 at-bats, the reward isn't great enough.
"Baltimore? Better reward. I'm not using it as an excuse. But it is a mindset.""Here's the thing: Other teams come in here from Anaheim or wherever and they have their swing already down," Maloof said. "This park doesn't even enter into their minds when they hit here. They have their swings, the same swings, because it pays dividends for them at home.
"What we need to do with our players, like we were in April, is be better at situational hitting. We were over 60 percent then in getting guys in from third. We're under 50 percent now. We just need to execute better. In this ballpark, go ahead and hit the ball in play (with guys on third and less than two outs). You're not going to hit a home run anyway, for the most part.
"I'm not making excuses. We play half of our games here. I'm just talking about the ability for a ball to carry out here the way it would in Anaheim or Philadelphia or in Baltimore, where we have hit home runs."Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic 2013
And that is why you never take stuff out of context. Wedge made perfect sense to me and I can see what he is saying. Way back when I used to play MVP Baseball, I'd have that mentality. I'd go up thinking I had to get as many pitches in an at bat as I could. More often than not, I'd wind up down 0-2 or 1-2 and I kind of screwed myself over.
I love sabermetrics and numbers, but Wedge seems on target to me there. Too many batters want to seem valuable and have the wrong approach to it.Comment

Maybe, maybe not. Not unbelievable for someone to only pay attention to part of a quote and then run with it. Seems to happen a lot in the media.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic 2013
You also have to take the entire situation into context. Wedge is under a ton of fire for not developing all this young, elite talent and he's deflecting the blame. Seager is the only one who has developed in house. Ackley and Montero have regressed to the point "bust" whispers are setting in. Smoak and Saunders floundered under Wedge, once they went outside the organization for development, only then did they show any improvement. Noesi and Maurer have regressed under Wedge as well.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment
