That would be a terrible alternative. This rule just simply can't pass without more specifics than what we have. Pickoffs aren't meant to actually pick the guy off (it's just a bonus when it happens), they are meant to try to control the running game.

After 2 times, you can still step off/pick off, but if the runner isn't out on the throw, anyone on base is awarded a base.

There has to be limits for the runner though.
That's what I assumed the rule was. Otherwise it's an automatic steal (not really since the catcher can still throw them out, but you can't limit how far they lead off or how early they take off then).

It's just a dumb rule and a portion of baseball that really has no means of being properly controlled. Just leave it be.

I actually think that it's dumb how much the crowd boos on a single pickoff attempt these days. I get when they boo three in a row, but the first one of the day on a runner who clearly has an itch to steal? Get over it.

I’m looking forward to the pitch clock. Go watch a game from the 80s and the pace makes you feel like you’re watching a different sport

I think I'm most excited about the bases lol...cause it doesn't change a whole lot.

I'd be fine with one or two of these rule changes, but all of them together feels a little too drastic. It seems like they are trying to create a whole new game instead of improving on an already beautiful one.

I think they made the bases bigger as a potential safety issue, especially at first base where runners and defensive players trying to cover first can possibly tangle each other up.
not loving the limited pickoff attempt rule though. stolen bases are going to rise, creating more offence. offence is what has increased games to over 3 hours in the first place. counterproductive to get games done in under 2 and a half hours.

also, I know the pitcher is probably going to need to see the pitch clock but I dont want to see any kind of digital play clock like the one in football or the shotclock in basketball. I'd rather there be something like a set of lights on the back stop for the pitcher to see, that gets smaller as time runs out, or 5 lights that shut off 1X1 the last 5 seconds

Not sure about the step off stuff, need to read more about it. The only thing I definitely don't like are the shift restriction.

I mean, we 100% know the pitch clock is gonna be prominent behind home played sponsored by Tissot or Rolex or someone like that.

As I see it part of the "problem" is everyone going for the home run (hence a rise in strikeouts) and not putting the ball in play. Then, since Manfred is so fond of changing the ball, change it one last time to make it not travel that far and once teams/players realize that a lot of would-be homers are turning into easy to convert flyballs they would be forced to put the ball in play more (more line drives).

That + the pitch clock + maybe making the bases bigger to encourage more action/stolen bases would be my changes.

Personally, I'm fine with these rule changes. I don't think any one of them is going to significantly alter the core concept of the game nor how its played these days.

The one that will have the biggest impact, imo, obviously is the change with fielder positioning, but personally I've been wanting a "shift ban" since it became a thing.

If there is one thing I've loved about this year, it's that the ball is definitely traveling significantly less than previous years. I don't know if it's back to, say, 2015 levels though.

I'm not sure if I like the humidor in every ballpark, though. Arizona is no longer the bandbox it once was, and San Francisco feels much more even-keel than it ever has been.

Following recent experiments in the Minor Leagues, the recently formed Joint Competition Committee voted Friday in favor of three rule changes aimed at improving pace of play, action and safety at the

The pick-off rule is the only one that bothers me. I don't mind the others and support most of them. I will have to see how the pick-off rule plays out I guess.
