Well if guys would practice being able to bunt and/or hit to take advantage of the shifts consistently, either teams will stop shifting, or their obp will go way up. And in that case, I don't care what they are "being paid to do," if you are getting on base at a crazy high rate, that makes up for any loss of power.

It's really annoying how stubborn a lot of people in baseball are. Every other sport when someone introduces an innovative strategy, other teams and coaches try and find ways to counter it. Baseball a lot of guys just keep doing what they are doing or cry about it.

Exactly. Every time I see that dramatic shift for lefties with the 3B line wide open and every infielder over towards 1B, I wonder why they don't just drop down a bunt and take the base. ESPECIALLY when there's nobody on base. I can see not wanting to do that as a power guy with runners on, but with nobody on...isn't your job to get on base and set up the next guy to drive you in?

Weighing in at 275 pounds, Texas Rangers' first baseman Prince Fielder has stirred up lots of commentary online over his physique, which some claim isn't at its peak.

In the issue, Fielder defends his physique, explaining that he works out, ensuring that he's in proper shape to perform at his position.

"You don't have to look like an Under Armour mannequin to be an athlete," Fielder said of his physique in ESPN the Magazine. "I work out to make sure I can do my job to the best of my ability."

Some of the memes bring attention to Fielder's fitness, while others Photoshop him in seemingly random situations.

Partly. Power hitters are also a threat to drive in a run when no one is on base. I guarantee that teams are okay if a LH power hitter wants to lay down a bunt and end up on 1st base with no one else on if it means there is no chance a run will be scored in that AB. That's the whole point of these shifts. Teams are willing to give that up in order to try to take away an area where the ball may be hard hit.

We don't really know that since guys rarely do that. For the most part these shifts have been all reward with very little risk.

They continue to do them because they know that "power hitters" won't give up the chance to drive the ball just to get on base. So in that regard, we do know.

Because hitters are stupid and refuse to adjust. Even in situations like down 3 in the 9th inning, hitters usually refuse to do it because "that's not what their being paid to do." Which is BS because the ability to get on base is a huge reason even most power hitters get paid.

I was about to say that exact same situation, because I've seen that too much. With nobody on base, you can't hit a three-run homer. Even hitting a home run is really no different than a base hit, with the exception of the double-play threat.
