As a career, he's got no "asterisks" for me nor should he. One of the best players anyone has ever seen.
Matrix you always surprise the hell out of me. I figured you would despise arod.

I am not really sure what steroids does to the player, I assume they slow down possibly the body as far as muscle breakdown and speed up the healing process.......I might be wrong.

The really sad part to this is Alex sat out an entire season due to PED suspension. We will never really know what kind of numbers he would have put up had he just stayed clean. I did think he was very humble and admitted he had tripped many times along the way during his press conference.

McGwire ended his career and looked like Popeye with those huge forearms but, what a lot of people forget was that he hit 49 HR's his rookie year when he looked like Olive Oyl.

Those players that have fought tooth and nail to deny their use are the ones that really irritate me, the top of that list is Ryan Braun. He had no issue trying to throw a guy that probably makes 50k a year under the bus to try and save his own ***, pathetic. Then when caught again he finally owned up.

I don't think that PED's will ever leave the game, the labs will continue to try and develop things that won't be detected with the sample taken by MLB, and MLB will continue to change what they test for........sigh.....and there will continue to be those players looking for an edge with better living thru modern chemistry.

As far as entry to the Hall of Fame for some of these player, we will have to wait and see. They say time heals everything, for Pete's sake I hope it is soon.

Kind of connected this on my own. I present to you the five degrees of August 7th. On this date in history:

            - Ichiro recorded his 3,000th career MLB hit.
            - Wade Boggs hit a home run for his 3,000th career hit.
            - San Francisco Giants' Barry Bonds hit his 756th career home run.
            - Greg Maddux recorded his 300th career win against the San Francisco Giants.
            - Adrian Gonzalez hit his 300th career home run.

Or maybe that only counts as four?

Actually, to be a bit weirder about it...

                - Bonds has homered more off Maddux than any other pitcher (well, tied with four other pitchers).
                - Bonds congratulated Ichiro on the field after his hit.
                - Boggs hit his home run in Florida, the state of the team Ichiro now plays for.

Now trying to find numbers for how many times Maddux has beat the Marlins heh.

It's interesting to see how the view of players who used PEDs has changed. Instead of people advocating for them to be locked up or banned, people are now saying they belong in the HoF. Go back 5-10 years ago, and that was decisively not the sentiment back then.

I still, and have never, had a problem with steroids or enhancers. If they want to put their body through that to make themselves better, good for them. If you want to do it clean, good for you.

Still have to be able to hit a 90+ MPH pitch, a breaking ball with massive break, field a baseball coming at you 100+ MPH, catch a fly ball, throw the ball decently, and run the bases.

Nothing truly helps with any of that except for dedication, athleticism, and more.

Exactly. No matter how much you enhance your musculature, it's still a 3-inch ball coming 95 mph at a 2-inch bat.

Yours is the new age philosophy on this. Like I said, go back a few years and these opinions are few and far in between. There was widespread and almost universal outrage against juicing (except for Giants fans that largely stood by Barry at the time). Maybe it is a new generation of young fans growing up that mostly think like this?

I can't say that I agree with you completely, but, nobody is disputing the fact that baseball is an incredibly hard game to play.

If something is against the rules, then it's not fair for the "good for you" guys to have to compete with the "anything goes" guys. Nobody really knows how much of a boost juicers got. A lot of people rationalize it that all-time greats would've been that way no matter what. A lot of people misrepresent the benefit of PEDs as simply making one perform better as opposed to the well-known stamina and recovery aspects.

There's no need to re-litigate the Steroid Era, but I was just remarking on the fact it's become almost a sidebar to guys' careers these days.

I am about 30 years old, so I am not really a young fan anymore. But thank you for saying my way of thinking is as a young fan's.

Your justification that only young fans, or ones who don't follow closely are the ones who think as I do...but that just makes you sound ignorant. I have posted here with a lot of these guys since 2010, when I was still over 20 years old (young I suppose) and we have had some amazing debates, as well as discussions. Just in the recent years I have taken a bit of a step back with more new posters coming in and being active.

I was the first to battle for Bonds, as he is my favorite all-time player, and plenty of people were there with me. It isn't a new way of thinking, you were just never introduced to it I am thinking.

Anyway I'll get off my soap box, my suggestion to you is don't be so one sided on an idea/thought. My dad who is 57 years old really doesn't care about guys "juicing" either for another example...maybe I read your post wrong, but man, you are wanting it to seem I am 16 years old and have no idea what people were thinking when everything was leaked.

All I'm saying is that it's striking what a 180 public perception of this issue has taken over the past decade. One of my hypotheses as to why that might be is younger fans coming onto the scene are perhaps a bit more open-minded and perhaps have a shorter memory about how SHOCKING this was at the time. It's mostly fair to say that younger folks have a more liberal vantage point and are less set in their moral right/wrong constructs.

This is all pure speculation because I have no evidence. But, the discourse is strikingly different than it used to be. If you were to say the same thing you did today about being laissez-faire over PEDs back in 2005, instead of people liking your post, they probably would've called you a "moran."

It could be as simple as people changing their opinions over time instead of a generational thing.
