"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace
"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer -

Oy vay. Just when you think the Marlins can't get any more clown-car-engulfed-in-a-dumpster-fire...
The Marlins on Tuesday confirmed that it had fired John DeCicco, the man who plays the team's mascot, but Billy the Marlin will remain the team's mascot with a different person in the costume, the team said.
On an unrelated note...

I dunno what's worse, that that article was written or that you posted it like it means something lol. The mascot? Seriously? Let me know when they fire the head of concessions.
MLB picked the right ownership group, this is the most relevant the Marlins have been in years. The power of memes.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Exactly the surprising thing to me that came from the article was that they had 1 guy to be the mascot. I thought for sure every team made the marketing interns draw straws to see who was going to be the mascot for that night's game or the day's event.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
It hurts reading these words. My eyes...There's no evidence MLB picked an ownership group other than one that could afford the price...no track record that they're "the right group" as you claim. Secondly, yes the Marlins are very relevant right now. Kind of like how the Zodiac Killer was pretty relevant at one point in time. Being relevant for all the wrong reasons isn't a plus.

The Rays had a payroll in 2017 of 91 million. They're trying to cut their payroll (this was posted the other day in the Hot Stove thread)...down from 91 million dollars. And here an article is posted about the Marlins getting rid of their mascot...I think it's great for MLB to have a lightning rod meme team.
In other news, the award winning director of the OJ documentary is directing a Roberto Clemente biopic, from the same studio that did 42. Looks like it's based on a book by David Maraniss, gonna have to check that out. It's called Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball's Last Hero (the book is, not the movie).
