Part III: Maddux walked 999 batters in his 740 regular season starts, or 1.35 BB/GS. Or about 1 of every 20 batters he faced.

Good grief, Maddux was something special.

He threw a 77 pitch complete game in a 1997 start against the Cubs.

In 1994, he threw 10 complete games in the 25 starts he made that year (and pitched *at least* 6 innings in all of them). Only gave up 4 home runs TOTAL that entire year in a little over 200 innings pitched, all the more remarkable considering the homer-friendly era.

          Dude was a legend.

It has to have the slight asterisk of after a while umpires just gave him strikes because he was Greg Maddux, a bit like the classic "Mr Williams will let you know when it's a strike".

He used that "benefit of the doubt" better than anyone else though, he could throw the ball just off the plate, in a spot you could do nothing with, knowing that the umpire would give him it mot of the time. Then he'd just creep that further and further away, seeing just how much leeway the umpire would give him. The control to be able to do that, with multiple pitches, is just insane

^^^That's pitching though. Nothing remotely asterisk-worthy. Every other pitcher who has ever played the game has tried to do the exact same thing.

And I don't think umpires were trying to give him strikes that weren't balls, I think it was more like: "Well, if he threw it there, then it has to be a strike. So I'll call it." Same with Bonds and taking borderline pitches. "If he took it, then it must be a ball." And honestly, I don't know when he was ever wrong lol.

MLB with updated farm rankings after deadline.

                  1. Padres (1st in preseason)
                  2. Braves (2)
                  3. White Sox (3)
                  4. Rays (4)
                  5. Jays (9)
                  6. Twins (outside top 10)
                  7. Reds (8)
                  8. Dodgers (10)
                  9. Astros (outside top 10)
                  10. Yankees (6)

For those wondering, A's (7th) and Phillies (5th) are the 2 teams to drop out of the top 10 from pre-season.

Which makes no sense because the Phillies only moved 2 guys at the deadline.

It's not always about who you lose but rather the play of the prospects in the organization and relative to other organizations. Still, dropping 5 spots and out of the top 10 seems rather excessive.

                          I'll tell ya what's incredible.

The 2014 Detroit Tigers had David Price, Rick Porcello, Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Robbie Ray, Eugenio Suarez, Victor Martinez, Miguel Cabrera, Ian Kinsler, James McCann, Rajai Davis, and J.D. Martinez.

The 2014 Detroit Tigers did NOT WIN A SINGLE PLAYOFF GAME.

I think it might also have to do with them promoting guys (Crawford, Kingery, Alfaro, Dominguez) to the big leagues. This was the main way in which the Cubs' farm system was depleted. All the stud prospects became stud MLB'ers.

Yep this is most likely the reason. They had at least 2 top 100 guys (don't remember if Kingery was one) graduate from the list.
