Regarding this social media thing:

Lord help us if anyone goes digging through Marcus Stroman's social media history. I've heard some bad things about him (not substantiated) as a person and he's done some very stupid stuff in the realm of baseball. I can definitely see him having some ugly tweets in his past.

We didn't have little league at 13 or older. I guess it would cost too much with the size of fields they'd need.

Here's a really nice comprehensive article from Deadspin on this digging-thru-Twitter phenomenon:

I also like Jon Lester's tweet quite a lot:

If you’re on Twitter, please spend the 5 minutes it takes to scrub your account of anything you wouldn’t want plastered next to your face on the front page of a newspaper. Sean Doolittle wrote probably the best articulation of the subject matter - that I've seen anywhere - on his Twitter a little while ago.

              Sean Doolittle ✔ @whatwouldDOOdo

It’s been a tough couple of weeks for baseball on twitter. It sucks to see racist and homophobic language coming from inside our league - a league I’m so proud to be a part of that I’ve worked really hard to make a more accepting and inclusive place for all our fans to enjoy.

We have to start caring as much about the content of the posts as we do about when they were made and how they came to light.

The answer isn’t for athletes to leave social media. Social media can be great for an athlete. I met my wife on twitter (long story). It helps athletes share their stories and personalities and connect with their community. Besides, it’s not like you can accidentally post a slur.

A lot of the tweets that have surfaced are from several years ago - from a time in their lives when they may not have realized the impact those words have. But as you learn from and grow out of that youthful indescretion, delete those posts to reflect that growth.

Between all the people you meet and the places you go, there is a lot of opportunity for personal growth in baseball. It’s entirely possible that those old posts no longer reflect that person’s views. But actions will speak louder than words.

It’s a reminder that words matter, and that the impact the of words matter more than the intent. Rather than feeling like this platform makes us targets and we have to censor ourselves, find a way to use the platform to lift others up and make a positive impact.

It can be tough for athletes to understand why these words are so hurtful. Most of us have been at the top of the food chain since HS, immune to insults. When all you’ve known is success and triumph it can be difficult to empathize with feeling vulnerable or marginalized.

Homophobic slurs are still used to make people feel soft or weak or otherwise inferior - which is bull****. Some of the strongest people I know are from the LGBTQIA community. It takes courage to be your true self when your identity has been used as an insult or a pejorative.

It’s a privilege to play in the major leagues and we have an obligation to leave the game better than we found it. There’s no place for racism, insensitive language or even casual homophobia. I hope we can learn from this and make the MLB a place where all our fans feel welcome.

Great statements from those players. Don't brush something aside just because it happened when someone was "young and stupid"

Yeah, the "I was only 18 and i've changed." statement only goes so far. At that age sometimes your thoughts are locked in and crystallized for YEARS. A lot of things I believe in now were formed in my teenage years and a few things have fallen by the wayside but you can't use the "I was young and stupid" argument as a cure all when confronted with your past words/actions.

Lester is also correct in that the best thing you can do right now is to purge your social media accounts and if you want you can create a new one but you're ultimately playing with fire if you keep your digital footprint out there for everyone to see. That's the inherent danger of social media my friends.

No one is brushing it aside, they just aren't making a huge deal out of something someone said before they were even legally an adult.

Queue the "not making a deal of it is brushing it aside" comments. It isn't.

An article that references and talks about a Jayson Stark Athletic article about Expansion, realignment and scheduling.

This was brought up in the trade deadline thread and i'm linking to it for someone who asked about why would anyone break up the Yanks and Red Sox.

Fun fact, Kevin Pillar is now the longest tenured Blue Jays player. Stroman is the only other guy on their team today who appeared in 2014.

Unfortunately with all the "traditions" in baseball, I doubt we'll see anything like AL/NL ever being changed up.

My unpopular opinion is that I'd want to see a big shift in all of this. Let the rivals be in divisions, so we can have both NY teams in a division, both Chicago teams, both LA teams.

NFL styled playoffs wouldn't be bad either. A WC round with a best of 3 (2WC teams and the 2 worst division winners), then LDS best of 5 and LCS best of 7 like normal.

Baseball is about history. No way radical alignment happens, especially before the DH is instituted for all teams.

Spinning off this, I have another MLB Network trivia question that appeared a few days ago:

Name the eleven active MLB position players who have played 10+ seasons for only one team their entire careers.

Their initial question didn't state how many position players, and it was kind of vague as to whether or not the players could have played for other teams, so long as they served for one team for at least ten seasons. So when I was working on it with a pad and pen, I had made two separate lists, and it turns out the second list got a lot longer so I just assumed the initial idea only (they've only played for one team).

I got 9 out of the 11, and guessed incorrectly on 4 of them (I guess two of them are technically inactive). I should have gotten ten of them if I thought a little harder, but the eleventh may be really hard for you to guess.

No researching this time! Cumulatively, you all should be able to get them (if not separately).
