I think Simmons being a jackass had more to do with Grantland being shutdown than anything else. IIRC ESPN tried to keep some kind of faux Grantland type space within their site for a while after Simmons left. I don't think any of us are thinking Rosenthal could make big money with his own outlet but i'm sure there would be a strong core that would go there.

I'm really surprised to see people holding the possibility of him creating his own outlet as plausible. If all of these big sites are killing their sports writing, that leads you to believe there's an opportunity to make a lot of money in sportswriting? Bill Simmons was a bigger name, with ESPN backing, and Grantland still got shut down.

I think this is a worrying trend for fans of baseball/sports writing.Like you said, Jayson Stark is still a free agent, giving out trivia nuggets on Twitter. Has anyone seen Marc Stein since his layoff? Field's getting smaller and smaller. At least Jonah Keri and Ben Lindbergh are still places writing. I'm happy Sam Miller works somewhere too, even though it's ESPN and I can't find any of his articles on their site lol.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Grantland never made ESPN any money. Simmons being a star was the only reason it was started, and after that his stardom and the prestige it brought them made it worth it for them to keep. After he got canned, they kept it around for a few months, shuffled the writers they wanted to the main site and laid off the rest.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Well, aren't some of the ESPN writers that are out still technically under contract so they can't write anywhere else until they reach a buyout with ESPN? That would be the reason some of them haven't resurfaced yet.
As for Grantland, one of the reasons it got shutdown was because Simmons itself raided that place with a: "if I don't have it, you won't have either" mentality. Then he started The Ringer...OSHA Inspector for the NBA.Comment

HOF this weekend. Should be a fun one to have. Raines finally gets in on his last possible chance after Expos fans have been lobbying for him for years.
Raines getting induced into the HOF while having abunch of Expos fans in the crowd....all while Selig will be inducted as well. Might we actually hear someone(Selig) getting booed during their HOF induction lol.Comment

Khris Davis by far the worst arm in all of MLB.
I saw this article on Fangraphs - a 15 year review of the worst arms in baseball. Khris Davis is the worst - hands down. In fact, Davis is having the worst season of any 'arm' in the last 15 years (even Juan Pierre beats him!).
Told you guys!

If I'm already on there then hey. And Facebook is not responsible for the rise in the insufferability of sports like ESPN and other assorted bull**** "sports media outlets" are.Comment

That'll be a fun take to look back on when sportswriters are complaining about poor placement in the News Feed next to 13 year olds making conspiracy videos.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Anyone remember the Drew Pomeranz for Anderson Espinoza deal last deadline season? How the Red Sox overpaid etc etc.
Well Pomeranz hasn't missed many starts for Boston, is performing just fine, and now Espinoza is the next to get his UCL repaired. You win some, you lose some.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment
