In other news, happy 26th birthday to Mike Trout. He was one hit shy of having 1000 before turning 26.

Here's how good he was 3 YEARS AGO.

Mike Trout has a +52.6 career WAR through age 25, or about what Vladimir Guerrero, a future HOFer, put up in his entire career (+54.3).

      The guy is amazing.

I'd put Steve Rogers or Dennis Martinez in the Nationals list.

                Not too long. ~30 minutes.

I would not be surprised if Jose Bautista calls it a day after this season.

Today on the radio in Toronto we had Buster Olney on and he says that Bautista would be "fortunate" to get a minor league deal next season and then there was another interview with some guy from The Athletic noting how far Bautista's fallen basically stating that he's fallen almost as quickly as he rose in Toronto.

Bautista is a guy with a LOT of pride and sometimes that pride has gotten the better of him. I actually feel sorry for him. It must be difficult for a guy like that to realize that his skill has diminished to the point that he isn't effective and may not even be able to get a MLB job next year. A prideful guy like Jose can't take another season like this so i'm wagering he's gonna say goodbye to the game. If that's the case I hope he announces it before the end of the season and he can get a great sendoff by the fans here.

I wouldn't put Tony Fernandez on that list. He was great and all, but wouldn't put him top 4-5 of all time Jays players.

Names like Bautista,Stieb are ones to consider on that list instead.

Stieb might not have ever won a Cy Young, but his numbers are obviously impressive. Definitely would've been helped lots by analytics. 2 of his seasons he got Cy Young votes, he actually had the highest WAR among all who received votes.

Fernandez is an interesting case though, he was a very good player for a lot of years and the interesting thing about him is that every time he played somewhere else he never lived up to what he was like in Toronto. If you look at his career numbers you'll see he excelled here. Even in the twilight of his career in 1999 he was producing big time as he flirted with .400 until the month of June.

Umpire Joe West has been suspended 3 games for publicly bashing Adrian Beltre.

Joe West called Adrian Beltre the "biggest complainer" in an interview with USA TODAY Sports in June. That remark earned him a three-game suspension.

Yeah, sort of. I'm not sure I would charactertize it as such, exactly.

I'm no fan of Joe West (on the field or off of it--he's a giant tool), but I think this is a prime example of taking something out of context. If you read the article, you'll see where Joe West was asked a direct question about what player complains about his calls the most as part of a fluff piece on his longevity as an umpire. West went on to identify Beltre by name and then tell a totally harmless anecdote about how he and Adrian Beltre often disagree on calls. I believe the words West used were something like "you might be a great ballplayer, but you're the worst ump in the league" referring to how he responds to Beltre when Beltre questions ball/strike calls.

To the people saying this is bad form or whatever, I mean this is Joe West. We already know he's not the best ump or the sharpest tool in the shed. And players and umps go back and forth all the time about their relationships with one another. The only difference here is this exchange was quoted publicly. I think people arguing that this is evidence of "bias" or make things seem like it might affect calls in a live game are sorely mistaken.

Should Joe have mentioned Beltre by name? Probably not--he could've said something about how he knows of a few, but wouldn't answer the question based on his respect for the game/players. But, is this worth a 3-game suspension? Nah

Yeah, I'm not shooting the messenger. Just reacting to the news. No worries. When you (or anyone) post a link to news, I don't really see that as a formal declaration of an opinion, fwiw.

                                Per the article:

I had a game with him recently and the pitch was right down the middle. He tells me, “that ball is outside.”

I told him, “You may be a great ballplayer, but you’re the worst umpire in the league. You stink.”

It wasn't difficult to find the pitch in question. June 17th, first pitch leading off the bottom of the 3rd.

I mean, Joe has a point.
