"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I believe the pace of play of the sport is only a problem because they keep saying that it is a problem. This is going to be a stupid statement, but if nobody made a fuss about it, then nobody would be making a fuss about it.
I've heard people say "baseball is boring," and although I disagree I never thought it to be regarding the pace of play, but their idea of the sport in and of itself. That's totally their prerogative if they believe that, and I don't think we should try and change our sport to accommodate them. I don't think increasing this is helping anybody, really. Just hurting the fans who already like watching it, especially at the ballpark itself.
That automatic walk is a travesty. First time I saw it at a live ballpark (Mother's Day last year), I was totally shamefaced... almost embarrassed and trying to act apologetically to my mom about what happened and the rule. She was bamboozled about what was happening on the field since nobody on the ground explained it.
If there's one rule I wish they'd implement is some sort of phant 'safe zone' when sliding into a bag.
I hate seeing guys get called out because their bellybutton was off the bag by 1cm and for .5 seconds.
Unless they fly completely off the bag, I'd consider them safe.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
The commissioner and media are pushing the idea that the only way the game can be entertaining is if it's played within a 3 hr window at most. I'm sorry folks, this isn't a TV show. Baseball is a sport without a clock and it can go as fast or as slow as the pace dictates. Some of the pace of play ideas are actually good though (hitters staying in the box, shorter commercial breaks, getting pitchers to pitch in a rhythm even if it means having a dreaded clock in there) but either they aren't enforced or the rule will never see the light of day due to kvetching by the Union.

Then we'd disgress into the "is he in the area, is he off the area" type of scenario, like the NFL did with the catch rule.Originally posted by Gibson88Anyone who asked for an ETA is not being Master of their Domain.

Tom Verducci's 10 things to improve baseball:
- Pitch clock. No.
- Automated strike zone. Yes.
- softer bases. Sure, why not.
- tackier baseballs. Wut.
- Rolling 25 man September rosters. Need more info but leaning yes.
- Switch interleague rules during interleague play (NL teams get DH at home). No.
- No midinning changes in ASG. No.
- replay decisions announced by to crowd by umpire. Sure, why not.
- everything reviewable. No.
- free tickets for youth groups. Sure, why not.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
It was like that Yankees/Cubs extra innings game that was on Sunday Night Baseball. Good grief that was infuriating.
Baseball needs to get rid of the slide rule, the home plate rule, and the tag rule. Less obfuscation and confusion will serve the sport best, unlike what the NFL has done. I had to spend 20 min last week explaining to my uncle why the two touchdowns at the end of the Super Bowl were actually clear cut no doubt whatsoever catches and touchdowns.Last edited by TheMatrix31; 02-25-2018, 03:21 AM.Comment

Thanks for the explanation Matrix. Much appreciated.
And I agree.
Replay reviews are hurting every sport.
Fans don't even know if they should celebrate when anything happens anymore.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
He spent seemingly the entire game criticizing what was happening, mocking visits to the mound and pitching changes and late game stuff. It was really obnoxious and it was a national broadcast if I remember correctly. Like dude, the country is watching and all you can do is **** on the sport?

The home plate and slide rules are the same as every other level of baseball, and it hasn't been an issue since about a month after they were instituted. People are blowing this stuff way out of proportion.

Way too much controversy and nitpicking. Way too much scrutiny. Seemed like the same sorta thing came into play dozens of times last year. It's a joke. Talk about drawing and keeping new fans. They tune in and see that **** and they think "what the **** is this muddled garbage?"
Cubs were involved in a high profile home plate rule and a tag rule in the playoffs last year, if you recall. They come into play way, way, way too often. The rules and the subsequent requirement of interpretation are numerous, tedious and absurd and go against everything baseball is. I don't care what level they're in place in. You look at something and say "oh he's out" or "oh he's safe" and anyone can see that and someone comes in and is like ACTUALLLLLLLLLLLLYYYY.
It's just nonsensical. Less nonsense por favor.Last edited by TheMatrix31; 02-25-2018, 08:33 PM.Comment

In college umpires tend to go with their gut and get it right a majority of the time.
I don't really think it's fair to compare a rule between leagues when in one it can be reviewed versus another that it can't be reviewed.Comment

Review should be a corrective measure more than an interpretive measure.Comment

My point is that everyone was up in arms about the plate rule after it was instituted about how it was ruining the game, then the players adjusted and now it's pretty much an afterthought. We see a review of it maybe once per week throughout baseball. It's just not that big of a deal except when people want to complain about how the game is changing.
The big difference (and I know you know this) is that in the MLB it can be reviewed and scrutinized to death.
In college umpires tend to go with their gut and get it right a majority of the time.
I don't really think it's fair to compare a rule between leagues when in one it can be reviewed versus another that it can't be reviewed.
It sounds like people are upset about them being reviewable rather than the rules themselves.
I just think the people that complain all about the changes are as guilty of hyperbole and exaggeration as the people complaining about the need for changes.Comment
