    Re: MLB Off-Topic

It's really weird that there will be three variants of critique based on an offseason signing.

Say that you could only legitimately pick one of these three in the current state of your team (the others can still be there-ish, but one is blatantly more obvious than the other two):

    1) Signing for the money
    2) Signing to chase a ring
    3) Signing in honor of organizational loyalty/hometown/wanting to build on his own/"happiness"

Mike Trout would fit in category #3 here (obviously he also got a **** load of money, but he didn't even wait it out until free agency to make that determination). It's funny because I'll see people get bashed for #1 and #2 all the time; none of these three so much in baseball, but as you said CMH they really would in basketball. Look at Kevin Durant with the Warriors, clearly being a #2 in that situation; now he is more so a #3 with the Nets, and maybe I just haven't paid as much attention but I haven't heard nearly as much national blowback.

Anyway, it's just interesting that you're in a "damned if you do/damned if you don't" kind of scenario just by being a good player, unless you can get all three of them mightily easily and take that road only like a Draymond Green (it helps that he is homegrown).

Trout would be getting beat up on twitter if he shot a ball instead of hit it.
Trout would also be viewed as boring because he doesn't have that superstar personality.

He'd probably be a Tim Duncan like player.

It's weird how we view things in each sport. In NBA, great players judged on titles, although McGrady, Iverson, Nash and others never won anything and those guys in their peak were best in the league.

In baseball, you dont have to win to be considered great. Many times we dont even see the best guys making the playoffs.

It's not that weird. One basketball player has the ability to completely change a game. In baseball, the pitcher is the only person that can do that, but they can only do it once a week/twice at most a series.

Makes sense that basketball players would be judged more on team success because they have much more control over that than baseball players do.

The real idiotic stat is wins/rings for NFL QBs.

Theres so many stats I find pointless in sports

Wins for a QB in football
W/L record for pitchers in baseball (even saves are fairly useless)
W/L record and GAA for goalies in hockey

Not sure what the most common/useless basketball stat is.

But as you can tell, W/L records for individuals is pointless. Why does it matter if a baseball pitcher had a 20 win season? A 15-10 record with a 2.50ERA guy I'd take over a 20-5 record with a 3.15ERA.

Saves aren't incredibly useless (though I do think they should be reworked), but they are in full control of the manager as a statistic merely to pad rather than for best strategical in-game purposes (which is how they should somehow be reworked).

EDIT: I take it back, they are incredibly useless in their current form. They don't have to be, though.

I remember hearing during the ASG one year how a teams win % in save situations before and after closers/saves were introduced hasnt really changed. So the closer role hasn't exactly increased a teams odds of winning at the end.

That's something I could see catching on one day. A team just not caring about a closer. Treat 9th when up by 1-3 the same as the 7th and 8th. Closers do get paid more than other relievers, so why pay more money? Just focus more on quantity and get more bullpen guys who are good so whoever is the fresh arm can close out games.

Crazy story I read. Zack Godley was claimed off waivers by Jays 2 days ago. He and new teammate Justin Smoak are apparently 2nd cousins. They only JUST found that out.

I think wins still matter. I think teammates will go out there with more confidence when a 20 win pitcher goes out on the mound, as a opposed to a guy who has had bad luck and the vibe seems to be that the team struggles more to get the W. That's stuff you can't really nail down with advanced stats.

I wish I found out she was my second cousin earlier, myself.

I always like the Brandon Crawford - Gerrit Cole matchups, given that Gerrit's wife is Brandon's sister. Must be an awkward Thanksgiving dinner, for sure. She can't ever win watching those matchups, except for maybe a hard lineout.

Love them. I figured they were wearing the players weekend ones so I'm happy about this.

Agree with the sentiment that rings aren't as important in baseball as in other sports (mainly basketball), the reasons for it and the fact that that is a good thing (in general).

But Trout's teams aren't even sniffing the playoffs and he decided to stay in that mediocrity (I know I know he decided to stay to win with them ).
