    Re: MLB Off-Topic

I heard that it is only in place for this year. Goodness, I hope so.

I also heard doubleheaders are back to nine innings apiece. Thank heavens.

At risk of angering everyone in the this thread, [I believe] the intention of the extra inning rule was to eliminate marathon games from the schedule in a season (2020) where pitchers did not have a traditional spring training to ramp up in an effort to reduce injuries.

Last season (2021) pitchers may have had a full spring training, but there were still concerns about injuries coming off of last years shortened season. There were only 39 pitchers with enough innings to qualify for the ERA title last year as opposed to ~60 in each of 2018 and 2019.

This year pitchers again arent going to have a full spring training, and will be playing the same # of games in fewer days. So IMO, it makes sense to keep the rule in place to save pitchers arms and reduce the never-ending shuttle than many teams send their relievers on between AAA and the bigs. Maybe the rule is here to stay, but there is definitely some reasoning behind it outside of just "MLB hates baseball"

Yea they always got an excuse. But I can't even put this on Manfred. Sounds like alot of the players like the extra innings rule too. And of course managers do.

Still shouldn't exist. You could barter with me about maybe instituting it. If the game went longer then 13 innings. But to go to it immediately. Absolute nonsense.

I do agree with the last part I would rather they give them 3 innings of "regular" baseball before putting a runner on 2nd

To modify a Mitch Hedberg joke, baseball is like pancakes; at the start you love them but by the end you're sick of them. Then rinse and repeat the next day. 9 innings is more than enough, especially with how they play today.
No, because the games have illegitimate results because the games are not being played according to the way the sport works.

                Yeah that's stupid too.

Also that happened because of physical limits to, you know, earth and technology.

I really hate acting like a old angry guy. **** I'm only 32. But the reality of all of this is the continuous pussification of our major sports that we love. And in this instance "baseball"

They got rid of sliding at second base a certain way because someone got hurt. They got rid of rail roading catchers because a star got hurt. They did away with real intentional walks for literally nothing. Time saver[emoji38]

Pitchers are lucky to go six innings. Because teams are terrified they will kill their arms. Even though in the 90s and early 2000s We had guys that could go the distance plenty. But every manager is scared to push guys. Even though they are likely to have TJS some time in their career regardless.

We have a extra innings ghost runner because relievers need to rest. Now we have the ohtani rule. And none of this has made the game better.

It's all an abomination. Oh yea and then extra playoff teams added to the mix that don't deserve to be there. Fun times.

And as someone who watches MLB for 4-6 hours every night, I disagree with quite literally everything you said. That’s the beauty of opinions I suppose.

I'm just glad you're finally able to admit to yourself it's just a difference of opinion rather than that time you told us all that anyone who didn't agree with the changes was incapable of thinking for themselves or having an open mind.

Oh and also that we lack simple life skills for failing to bend at the knees to the new MLB rules.....

You just liked a post where a user dropped the line “pussification”… and then somehow imply that I bend the knee because I want to see what change looks like, and understand the root cause of the decision.

                              C’mon man.

I'm not sure you understood my post so I'll try and do a better job here.

I actually have no issue at all with the opinion ANYONE has about the new rules. I'm not at all suggesting that you are bending the knee to the new rules. I'm really glad that some like them and equally understand why some don't (opinions - like you said). Yes, I fall in the latter category.

My post was a clear reaction to your earlier post that clearly implied that those of us that don't like the new rules can't think with an open mind (as if that's needed since we've already seen these rules in place) and then the implication that we lack simple life skills by not being able to adapt to the new rules (you're words, not mine).

You take out of consideration that those of us that don't like the new rules hadn't thought about it and are just mad to be mad, and maybe there are some that fall in that category but not everyone.

Many take an objective look at the rules and decide for themselves (opinions like you said) whether or not they like it. Doesn't mean we lack an open mind.

Rule changes are inevitable, I don't ever have anything against anyone who likes them. The post of yours that I quoted show that you don't afford the same flexibility for those who don't like them.

Yes, I liked a post with the word pussification in it. Sorry that hit you but that's my opinion I guess.
