    Re: 4/23 - 5/6 Game Discussion Thread

Anyone confirm what just happened in the Cards game? Radio guys are speculating that St. Louis was called for a quick pitch, and it was ruled as "no pitch" even though the batter flew out. He then walked a couple pitches later.

I didn't know there was a rule against it, especially with no one on base.

I believe it was Colin Moran, bottom of the 8th.

Also, he ended up scoring later on an error, not that it affected the game's outcome.

Thanks. Just watched it, but had to do it on mute.

There was nothing illegal about what he did. Unlike some other variations of the sport, he does not have to bring his hands together at any point during the motion/windup. That should not have been waved off.

Yeah, I saw that live. The ump called quick pitch on Mayers and assessed an extra ball. It doesn't matter that nobody is on base because the umpire thought it was deceptive to the batter. The Cardinals TV guys were complaining for about 2 full innings afterward.

This is wrong. The hands have to come together in both the windup and set position. If the hands never come together, the pitcher is considered in the sign position, and pitching from the sign position should be deemed an attempt to deceive the hitter and therefore an illegal pitch.

Coverage includes audio and video clips, interviews, statistics, schedules and exclusive stories.

8.01 Legal pitching delivery. There are two legal pitching positions, the Windup Position and the Set Position, and either position may be used at any time.

              (a) The Windup Position. The pitcher shall stand facing the batter, his pivot foot in contact with the pitcher’s plate and the other foot free. From this position any natural movement associated with his delivery of the ball to the batter commits him to the pitch without interruption or alteration. He shall not raise either foot from the ground, except that in his actual delivery of the ball to the batter, he may take one step backward, and one step forward with his free foot.

When a pitcher holds the ball with both hands in front of his body, with his pivot foot in contact with the pitcher’s plate and his other foot free, he will be considered in the Windup Position.

              (b) The Set Position. Set Position shall be indicated by the pitcher when he stands facing the batter with his pivot foot in contact with, and his other foot in front of, the pitcher’s plate, holding the ball in both hands in front of his body and coming to a complete stop.

Rule 8.01(b) Comment: With no runners on base, the pitcher is not required to come to a complete stop when using the Set Position. If, however, in the umpire’s judgment, a pitcher delivers the ball in a deliberate effort to catch the batter off guard, this delivery shall be deemed a quick pitch, for which the penalty is a ball. See Rule 8.05(e) Comment.

Right after I posted, I edited my post to say exactly this, but my Internet cut out and I guess OS didn't register yet. Yes, what I wanted to say is that most pitchers who do that quick pitch get their hands together first. I didn't know one way or the other based on that.

I didn't have the rules available to me at the time to know for sure.

LOL. Reyes Moronta is listed at 6'0" 175 lbs.

                  I'll take 5'10" 235 lbs for 1000, Alex...

Cueto has put on some lbs, too.

Salvador Perez tries to be the "fun police" against Tim Anderson after pimping a homer but nobody makes a big deal of it because it's Salvador Perez and it's not like it's that old stodgy backwards fun ***** Brian McCann right?

Perez completely overreacted and then took it out to the basepaths afterwards because he couldn't let it go. I don't think anything Anderson did was that egregious to begin with, just a bad look for Salvy.

                        Carmago
                        Swanson
                        Pitcher
                        Inciarte

Swap out Carmargo with an aging Bautista and tell me the Braves couldn't at least make a serious wild card push.

                        Help, i'm starting to believe.

Address the bullpen and keep jumping out in front before Murphy, Rendon, and Eaton return to Washington's lineup... and I'll be more than just a believer then.

The important thing is that the Braves believe in themselves. Having Albies and Acuña there is igniting that spark plug in a way that they didn't really seem to have last year. It also helps to have a healthy Freddie and a great sophomoric bounce-back in Swanson, plus the team having enough speed to support Snitker's aggressive baserunning philosophy. The offense is carrying them, and for now that will be okay. So getting a wild card spot is not truly out of the question.

Just remember that Philadelphia is just as real and just as hungry, so with every team kind of having their strengths at the right time in the NL East means we will have our best shot if everyone else just beats each other up and we beat them whenever we play them.

I'd like to see Acuña stay "on top of the ball" a little more today to lace some pitches and swipe some bags. He won't be walked much batting in front of Freeman, so hopefully he shows that opportunity today.

It is definitely a good time to be a Braves fan though, that's for sure. Hopefully this looks to be the beginning of a great run for Atlanta for years to come.

I saw this earlier and really like it...going with Ender at 9 provides the "double leadoff" and putting Acuna in front of Freeman ensures he'll get pitched to.

I've said I expect the team to be in the WC hunt until the end...I expected 80-85 wins this season. So far, they've exceeded my expectations...if they figure out their bullpen issues, this team can play with anyone.
