Re: Boston Red Sox - 2006

It should be interesting to see what they do with Papelbon. They want him to start, but don't want him to throw 200 innings. I can see him in the bullpen at some point, but I'd try to stay away from having him start in AAA, then move to the MLB bullpen. Either way, I'd be surprised to see him on the 25 man roster until the end of April.

Remember, Adam Stern needs 18 days on the 25 man, so we will likely carry 5 outfielders until he can be sent down. With all the off days over the first month it makes sense to only carry 10 pitchers, which leaves Papelbon as the odd man out even if you trade a starter and give Vermilyea back to the Jays.

We have to trade one of our SEVEN starters. Otherwise, we will be forced to use two of the following: papelbon (a very promising young starter), Bronson Arroyo - a rather good starter, and Wakefield (whos actually quite good-16 wins).

We should trade Arroyo or Wake or Wells or a combination of 2 of the 3 to the mariners for eddie guardado. that would be awesome

I HIGHLY doubt the Sox trade Wakefield...and to even think about such a thing is blasphemy.

They won't trade Wake. They re-signed him last year so he could pitch with the Red Sox until retirement.

After looking at it further, it does look like Papelbon will start the year at AAA. I forgot about Stern needing to stay on the roster for 18 days and at this point it would be stupid to not keep him on the Major League roster. And who knows if Foulke will even be ready to go in April.

I guess Flaherty didn't enjoy catching Wake the other day:

John Flaherty, the presumed frontrunner to win the job as Tim Wakefield's personal catcher, just retired.

With Huckaby banged up, I guess the job goes to Bard by default.

No one cares about what happened on July 1st of 2004, they only care about what happened on October 27th.

Big Papi homered in his first AB of the WBC, always good to see Ortiz going deep!

No need to get all defensive.

I'm not being defensive, just stating a fact. I honestly did not not remember that game until you posted that picture.

Yeah....I completely forgot that J.F. actually did something in his career...

and I agree it's always nice to see Papi hit the long-ball....twice in one game let's keep it up all season

Really? I still think that was one of the best games I ever saw along with Games 4 and 5 of the ALCS but a little sweeter for me since we were on the winning end of it and unfortunately not on the winning end of Games 4 and 5.

David Wells is being shopped again. There were scouts from Texas and Arizona looking at him.

I think it's safe to say that Dustan Mohr has locked up the 4th OF job, Mohr is batting .409 this spring with 3 HR's. The Sox may have to make a decision on whether to carry 12 Pitchers or 5 OF's at the start of the season or offer Adam Stern back to the Braves and hope they reject.

They'll start the season with 5 OF and after Stern is on the big league roster for his 19 days (or whatever the number is to make him property of the Red Sox) to start the season, he will get optioned to Pawtucket and probably left there for the rest of the season (assuming none of the MLB outfielders get hurt).
