Re: Boston Red Sox - 2006

What do you guys think about trading Wells? I think that we should try to trade him. If we get a couple teams that want him we could probably drive up the price.

If we can I say trade him, he won't be here next year and were not winning so we might as well get the most we can for him which would probably be a mid-level prospect.

I say trade him for whatever you can get. They should be looking to trade anyone who isn't in your plans for next year.

Nice of Beckett to learn to pitch at such an important time in the season.

        Big kudos.

That may have been the most all out extension on a diving catch I can ever remember.... my goodness Coco.

Beckett has only allowed 2 runs through six innings. I haven't really been paying close attention to the game, but it looks like he's been lucky to put up this good line. I suppose I judged without knowing all the facts.

            46 strikes
            34 balls

            2 walks and 2 Ks.

Time to start dragging some positives out of these losses I suppose. That catch from Coco at least rivaled his Leap of Faith, and Beckett mixed his pitches semi-well for once and has looked sharper recently. He needs to carry it into next year.

I heard this morning on ESPN Radio that Theo is trying to shop Boomer to the Dodgers for Matt Kemp

I definitely wouldn't turn him down but do we really need another outfielder?

                Manny
                Crisp
                Pena
                Hinske
                Kapler?

I suppose he could be used as trade bait, or put in center if Theo and company would like to ship Coco out. Although I don't think it'd be good a look for the team in the eye of (potential) FA's if they send another new acquisition packing because of one poor year.

I seriously doubt Kapler is in their plans for next year. He just isn't a good player. Also, Hinske is versatile enough that you could keep him as a 5th OF/1B/3B, and a LH bat off the bench.

That's true, but I'd think going for a pitcher would be a much more sensible thing to do.

But since it's past the deadline I suppose it's just best player avail. mode now.

Re: Boston Red Sox - 2006

Here's my take on where the Red Sox pitching staff stands for 2007

                      Returning
                      Schilling
                      Beckett
                      Delcarmen
                      Hansen
                      Lester
                      Papelbon
                      Corey
                      Tavarez
                      Van Buren
                      Snyder
                      Dinardo

                      Decision Time
-Wakefield (can renew his contract at $4m which I think they will)
-Clement? (I think theyll do everything possible to get rid of him)
-Foulke (has a $1.5m buyout which I think the Red Sox will take. He can then exercise a $2.75m player option for a total of $4.25m vs his $7.5m option)
                      -Mike Timlin (time to retire)
                      -David Wells (time to retire)

                      Needs
Definitely need a starting pitcher, if not two. They also need some more reliable relievers. I think Snyder could do well as a mop up/long man. Ideally, they'd sign a closer so Papelbon could start. I know people like what he's done as closer but he's more valuable as a starter.

                        And their lineup:

                        Returning
                        Crisp
                        Lowell
                        Ortiz
                        Wily Mo
                        Ramirez
                        Varitek
                        Youkilis
                        Pedroia
                        Hinske
                        Carlos Pena?

                        Decision Time
Cora (I think they should try to bring him back for cheap)
Loretta ( I think they should bring back either Loretta or Gonzalez but not both)
                        Gonzalez (see above)
                        Lopez/Mirabelli
Nixon (hate to see him go but there isn't much room in the OF and Pena should be playing full time)
                        Kapler

                        Needs
                        - Legit 4th OF
                        - SS or 2B
                        - Better backup C
                        - Another LH bat

Your forgetting that if we keep Wakefield then we need to keep Mirabelli because no other catcher seems to be able o catch Wake. Which sucks, alot.

That's BS in my opinion. Bard would have been fine if the Red Sox didn't panic. The thing that really screwed them up was Flaherty's retirement, since he worked with Wake the most in the first half of spring training.

Mirabelli is a liability at the plate these days. We need a guy who can step in for Tek if he gets hurt and give him more time off if he needs it.

Rumor Central on ESPN.com says Dodgers, St.Louis, and Padres are all interested in Wells.

It says we asked for Matt Kemp from the Dodgers like you guys already said. And I think it's just a matter of time before we trade Wells for someone.

Nick Swisher is Curt Schilling's 3000 carear strike out.

Congratulations to him, I wish it could have been in Fenway though.
