Nice pitcher's duel so far between Webb and Peavy. The only difference being a Kouzmanoff double and a Sledge Home Run (2).

Peavy is just dealing right now.

I would say, 10 K's through 4 innings, any chance he gets 15-20 this game?

EDIT- Even more impressive, hes struck out 9 batters in a row over that same span.

Streak is over. Eric Byrnes works a full count walk.

9 Consecutive Strikeouts sets a new Padre record and falls one short of the Major League record set by Tom Seaver (10, against the Padres back in 1970).

No offense... but your announcers are sort of homers. They didn't actually think that pitch to Webb was a strike, did they? I would argue till I get suspended for the rest of the year if I were batting and that happened. That's not even remotely close to being a strike.

As for Peavy, congrats to his performance and the proximity of him reaching that record.

Matt and Mark have always been like that. It's not as bad as some other announcers. Until the Padres manage to expand their TV broadcasts somehow, like getting it also on satelite, they'll mostly be catering here in San Diego, no reason to be level-headed when the national feed is usually the opposing team's announcers.

While I like the duo, for people who like a straight-faced serious announcing, whenever Gwynn is in the booth you get a really good broadcast.

Edit: Matt Vasgersian has a knack for jinxing the Padres out of a no-hitter or cycle.

Jake Peavy is still in. What a surprise.

I thought Black would've pulled him because of his pitch count and let the bullpen finish it.

Oh, no doubt there are worse announcers (*cough* White Sox *cough*)... but there are just definitely times where even THEY should be scratching their own heads and wondering what they just said.

There are two types of homers: Those that excite themselves over great performances by their own team and piss on anything great by another team (White Sox), and then those that think every call should be on their side (Padres).

But you're right: When Gwynn is in there, they are indeed awesome. I'll admit that I like listening to Vasgergian, but sometimes they just make me go "WTF!?"

Agreed with the last paragraph. Not being able to watch them spares me the inability of the offense to score when they have rallies going, but even then, the announcing of Matt and Mark at least eased the pain of the 2002-2003 seasons.

I do agree sometimes they say all calls should go to them, but they don't ignore gifts the Padres get by umpires too (and Mark Grant always says a check swing is "he went around, he makes contact with that it's a double down the line").

Peavy is done for the day. Ties the franchise record for strikeouts in a game I believe (a mark he set last season).

Great outing. Now the bullpen needs to hold the lead.

By the way, just wanted to throw this out there... but did you guys know that Cla Meredith balks every pitch that there's a runner on base?

I wouldn't know. I have never seen The Cla pitch.

That Peavy guy can pitch pretty good.

Hmm. Well, it must be April still. Drew with the walk-off two-run home run off Hoffman to get the D'Backs a win.

Tough to waste an excellent outing by Peavy. Oh well, now time to read the letters to the editors this weekend saying how Hoffman is done.

Damn, 16 K's? That's ridonkulous. He was just painting the outside corner with his fastball. Nuts.

Gonna be some happy fantasy owners waking up tomorrow..

Some should be disappointed that he didn't get a win out of it.
