I have to laugh at this one.. on ESPN yesterday, they had the president of the Florida Marlins on, basically blasting the Yanks for the $$ they gave CC (citing the usual "economic times" talk), and that it was bad for baseball.

I felt like asking him -- "so, your annual fire sales are GOOD for the game?"

I have to laugh at this one.. on ESPN yesterday, they had the president of the Florida Marlins on, basically blasting the Yanks for the $$ they gave CC (citing the usual "economic times" talk), and that it was bad for baseball.

I felt like asking him -- "so, your annual fire sales are GOOD for the game?"

Yeah, not to mention how he pockets all the revenue sharing money...most of that courtesy of the Yankees.

Hughes will probably not spend the entire year in the minors as I'm sure one of those pitchers will get injured at some point during the season. I think our rotation will be Sabathia, Wang, Burnett, Pettitte, Joba to start the year with Phil, IPK, Aceves starting out in AAA. Maybe Aceves starts with the big league club as a long reliever.

I think our rotation will be Sabathia, Wang, Burnett, Pettitte, Joba to start the year with Phil, IPK, Aceves starting out in AAA. Maybe Aceves starts with the big league club as a long reliever.

Plus, Joba will have to be skipped at times because of his innings limit. I think Hughes will have a role.

Looks like it's either going to be Pettitte or Hughes/IPK for our 5th starter according to Davidoff.

They have ruled out going after oft-injured Ben Sheets, someone familiar with their plans said, because of too many "red flags." Instead, they will await a decision from Andy Pettitte.

There are too many red flags for Sheets and a two year deal, but no red flags for Burnett and five years at 80+MM?

Agreed.

Though now that we have Burnett, I don't want Sheets. I don't want 2 guys in the rotation who are basically guaranteed to breakdown. Plus we aren't totally sure about Joba's shoulder.

Not necessarily. They could still sign him to a 1 year deal, they just want it to be lower than the $16M he made this year. If he accepted the arbitration offer he probably would have gotten the same $16M if not more.

I guess I'm confusing the rules with a sign date.

Perhaps you can help me refresh my memory. Isn't there a rule that prevents a player from resigning with his former team until May 1st if he isn't signed by certain date or not offered arbitration?

There used to be, but according to Peter Abraham that rule is gone.
