They were going for an old-time feel - but not that old!

Spanking-new, $850 million Citi Field is already beginning to rust.

A Post reporter spotted brown water from a rusty beam creeping down the wall of the front entrance of Citi Field's main gate in Flushing, Queens, on 126th Street. The Mets are set to move there in April.

Rob Bedelis, a mechanical engineer who helped build the Milwaukee Brewers' Miller Park, said Citi Field shouldn't be rusting a little over two years after the start of construction.

"It's a sign of the quality of workmanship," he said. "If I were a fan, I wouldn't be too thrilled. This might be cosmetic and not structural, but fans are paying a lot of money for baseball tickets."

The contractor, Hunt-Bovis, didn't return phone messages.

A Met spokesman said, "We are aware of the rust [and] plan to take care of it. It is no concern."

Some Met fans, however, weren't too happy.

"That is disappointing," said 25-year-old Jeffrey Ku of Flushing. "It is supposed to be a state-of-the-art stadium, and it has rust. They might as well have stuck with Shea Stadium."

Manny does not look like a possibility, according to an interview with Jeff Wilpon in the Daily News.

Apparently Minaya doesn't have any interest or at least enough that he hasn't mentioned it. Seems his focus is still on pitching.

So we picked up Freddy Garcia, Cory Sullivan and Rob Mackowiak.

I like the little additions we are making here and there. You never know you can have a comeback/breakout season. Also, apparently they've "sweetened" their deal for Perez.

Pared - Is the Freddy Garcia signing official? The last I read they were close on a deal but nothing on paper. I agee with you on the lost cost signings, but I still think they need a power right handed bat and non of the players they signed give them that.

That is a nice signing. Just like getting Redding it gives them options for the 5th spot. If they sign res-sign Perez (which seems likely now) the rotation & bullpen are ready to go. If they spent some more money and signed Juan Cruz the bullpen would be a lot better than last year. If they could get some production from second base from whoever is there they should be ok.

With Manuel saying all the posive things about Manny and his being the manager for another volitile player in Albert Belle do you think it is more likely the Mets might look at Manny? Maybe the statements are to gauge reaction from the fans of bringing in Manny. Offer some kind of 3 or 4 year deal that could be worth big money if he reaches incentives and get the big right handed bat this lineup needs. Do that or make some kind of deal with the Yankess to get back Nady and the lineup will be all set.

I'm not expecting much from Castillo at second base... That is Omar's albatross; nobody was close to giving him that much money, and now we can't even move him for a sack of crap. And that's with Orlando Hudson sitting out there begging to be signed.

I would love Hudson, but if one of the young guys can man that spot that would be ok as well. As long as you catch the ball at 2nd it really is not an issue for the Mets. What they still need is an outfielder with a power right handed bat.

Just wondering what our Mets fans here think about this?

I didn't think it was that big of a deal, to be honest...but it's not my team either.

Man that patch is ugly. And the bad thing is it's freaking HUGE. How come I get the feeling it's right at that point the budget was tapped.
Mets: "We got $5.36 left and we haven't done the patch yet"
Janitor:"Hey buy me a pizza and a large fruit punch out the machine not the bottled stuff and I'll get you a patch no problem"

Interesting... there's Citi stuff all over the place... Why don't they just call it City Field... It would go well with the team being the "Metropolitans"... Or better yet, why not have Met Life buy the naming rights... Then it could be Met Field even if Met Life goes under.
